The Imagination of a Carpenter......

Standing dry inside the open doors
I listen to the rolling thunder
The middle of spring now and all
is greening from down under

The metal roof is ticking in the
wavering heat without the sun
It's been a long week and soon
the rainfall will be done

Working wooden beams a hundred and fifty
years old .... seasoned and dried
Worn at the edges mortised and
tenoned...hand hewn with pride

There is nothing as haunting as
time standing still ...... and ghosts
I am transcended to another day another
time .....my imagination coasts

I see an older man in coveralls a work horse
and a wooden plow
And in the garden a woman bent over
a row of plantings now

The old man turns at the sound of approaching
horses and there......his son
Home from the Gettysburg and the
hospital his war duties done

How will a one armed boy take over on
this farm ......he wonders in measure
"Glad that he's home and alive is what matters"
Seeing him now .......the pleasure

He looks to his wife who drops the
rake in the dirt and runs towards the arrival
The rarest of tears well in his eye's
as she screams at his survival

In the present day back in real time in another war and another son comes home with one arm to another family that waits for his arrival..........and another war .......and another......

How profound. It is a sad reality that this will occur time and time again in your country and mine.

We see the repetition of boys too soon exposed to violence, pain and death. In the end we always dream of the day they come home. That kind of love lingers and presents itself in the minds of poets like you.

Hyphenbird , Thank you for the shared views, But I am often torn , I understand both sides. The poets and the patriots. Are the only real patriots in yesterday ? Are the only poets .....of Now! Such are the contradictions of mankind.....:-}

Yes. We have many men and women coming back from wars over many years. They all deserve to be acknowledged for sacrifices made/

I loved the vision of her in the field, looking up to see her love return. I hate wars. When will they ever end? Thank you.
