Story-A Visitor

..Today my uncle comes to visit and when he comes here we always have a lot of fun. Me and my sister have a good time teasing him with the marbles we roll under his bed to wake him up, well we have a good reason for doing this , honest.

... You see when he comes me and my sister have to sleep in the same twin bed and she always kicks me. And that is cause I sleep on the top part of the bed and she sleeps on the bottom, where the footboard is, and our feet always touch, as we listen to his snoring sounds...

...Anyway where he lives they all wear the same kinda clothes and have necklaces they wear around their necks, that have these numbers on them. I guess since they all dress the same it is hard to tell who is who? But my mommy tells me he is a very brave man and he is called a Soldier cause he works for our country the United States of America, she told me some people don't like our country and he is one of the many brave men and women who work very hard to keep us safe here.

...So whenever he comes to visit ( I guess it is his vacation) my mommy and daddy always have a party. We clean the house really good and mommy cooks all kinds of sweet stuff and daddy gets what is called a BBQ out so he can try to cook outdoors...mom is a better cook though !! We put out a big American flag and people wave at him when he walks down the street, I guess he knows a lot of people!! And he doesn't have a car so he rides a bus to get here.

...Mommy and daddy even move the furniture in the frontroom to make room so they can all dance to the records they play, it is fun to watch them and we even get to dance with him, he is so handsome and strong, and my daddy dances with us also, but I wonder why daddy doesn't work for our country, since he seems to like to fight?

...In the mornings after we roll lot's of marbles under my Uncle's bed, my little sister climbs underneath it and pushes the mattress up with her feet so he will be uncomfortable and wake up. He always makes funny sounds and then jumps out of bed and grabs her feet and pulls her out from under the bed and throws us both over his strong shoulders and carries us (giggling and squirming) to the kitchen where breakfast is waiting.

...Today though he is kinda sad and mommy hugs him a lot, she told me where he works they have guns and one of his friends has gone to Heaven now and my uncle misses him...You know where I go to school the teachers all wear the same clothes too, but they aren't called Soldiers, they are called Nuns and they say they work for God, and He lives in Heaven, but they don't carry guns, they carry a Bible...it gets me confused sometimes about all the different places people say is work.

...Guns and Prayers ? How do they work? And what is the real reason for them? Love ? Power? Strength? Knowledge? Love? How can you love and still shoot a gun to kill someone? But on the other hand how can carrying a Bible save someone?

My mommy always tells me two things:

...#1 is, "what goes around comes around"

And # 2 is, "you can say anything you want, but what you do is what counts".

And I do believe my mommy....

I think you have got the "through the eyes a child" storytelling down pat. The characters' innocence is touching. More of this, please - or I will cease to lurve ya! NOT! Thanks for always sharing :D

I agree with Chris, seeing through the eyes of a child is not easy, and you have done it so well.

G-Ma this was awesome, you little devil you and your sister were. Then as i continued reading I got sad and worried about all the confusion. You carried me along in your story and I loved your ending..."and I do believe my mommy", awww. This deserves a hug and a thumbs up.

Memories....your words are so right and express the feelings of those moments. How great and how sad, too the truth of death around our soldiers. Thank you G-Ma!

One a soldier comes home, its definitely a special occasion. A very poignant story G-Ma. I know when my cousin came back from Iraq, he was all smiles to start off with, but then it sits in, and they can't believe they made it. I always think, remove them from what they did in serving, as a human, for what they have seen and went through, its a heavy toll, and despite the politics, our hearts should go out to them for what they went through.

frogyfish...yes they are all brave souls and we have in the past been very cruel to them (in my opinion). this was just a short story trying to convey the past. Thanks for the comment :O) Hugs

GT..my dear...It was always a thrill when he visited and another uncle of mine too who was in the Navy...and as I remember we were always so proud of them and people would wave and welcome them anywhere, pick them up hitchiking with no fears or doubts...

And I do know how hard it is for them especially when they come home and are scorned...I have also a relative that was injured and became addicted to Heroin(sp) and they sent him home...he suffered for many years with the Vietnam war and the reprocussions of it....the things are un-beleivable and difficult to say the least. I believe now there is help for these men and all our soldiers ...not that it is ever enough...Love you sweetie...G-Ma :O) Hugs and thanks for commenting

Great story G-Ma. As you pointed out, soldiers and sailors back then were warmly greeted. This is so delightful reading this through a child's eye perspective. Keep it up! Loving it.

Peggy...Thanks sweetie I am working on another...I am not really a learned writer and don't like long stories, so mine are short and try to be to the point, I realize there are lot's of reading between the lines, if you so see it...

And yes Our service men used to so honored, it breaks my heart. I have adopted a US Soldier (adoptaussoldier.org) and so I write to him ( I got a male) and send things he needs, he is in Iraq...

Thanks for commenting...G-Ma :O) Hugs
