Stuck in my Ways?

I love you Mommy and Daddy
You taught me about life
You loved me every day
You tried to raise me right

I love you America
My hand is over my heart
You took my Daddy in
And gave him a new start

I love you Jesus
I can’t say what’s real
But I hope you are
Because that’s why I kneel

But that’s not all I am
Because things change
I’m not stuck in my ways
Familiarity gives way to strange

It’s not just love, loyalty or worship
It’s about right and wrong
It’s about knowing these things
And knowing where you belong

I love my neighbors
As much as a sinner can
I try to remember they cry too
I can’t assume I’m the better man

Everything I knew is still there
But things always change
I’m not stuck in my ways
Familiarity gives way to strange

Sometimes I cry to the Lord
Cry because of who I might be
I can’t admit the truth to anybody
Except to the one who knows me

You tell me something new
And I will clear my mind
I don’t allow life to pass me over
I don’t want to be the hurting kind

Everything I knew is still there
But things always change
I’m not stuck in my ways
Familiarity gives way to strange

I wonder if I ever had an idea
That someone else didn’t think of first
I wonder about what I choose to believe
And the thoughts I haven’t rehearsed

You say I am a free spirit
But what is free about confusion?
I long to believe in something
But my ways shatter all illusion
