Super Man - A Father's Day Poem

There's a man painting a picture somewhere

it's beauty is beyond human words

There's more to his story then what you see there

the handle gently sweeping his artistic sword

Dripping paint as red as his blood,

He remembers times he shed his own

Blood and tears, sometimes in floods

Like the day his sister left this Earthly home

Once upon a time, he was a man of God.

Until he had too many questions left unanswered

He views the world with suspicion and awe

Sees too clearly the evil, which clings like a cancer

He was always quick to protect and defend

A shield for his three little girls

Only fitting he would end up a veteran

And be the biggest Super Man in the world

I remember push ups, weights, and his punching bag

The karate lessons and “grab the pinkie finger”

Playing with the uniforms, hats, and dog tags

Of a sailor, a guardsman, an American gunslinger

At least in my mind, he was as wild as the west

Strong as the storms he worked in during the nights

In these eyes of mine, he will always be the best

The one person who could make everything right.

With the wave of a hand, such a magician was he

Such a clown, always quick to make one laugh

In those dark moments my mother made for me

He was always there to bring me back.

I was a target, in a twisted mother's vision

This man, my father, would show me love

He rescued me from her bad decisions

Like a guardian angel sent from above.

He was and is everything, my Dad.

The perfect blend of courage and guile

Somehow he learned to take the good with the bad

For his family, he would walk a hundred miles

Always a comedian with a spark in his eye

Wrangling snakes in the mountains at night

Fisherman, foreman, blue collar guy

Standing up for what he thought was right

He was a music man, with talent to spare

His singing voice lingers in sweet memories

Capturing attention of anyone, anywhere

When he wanted to shine, it was with infectious energy

A soldier, a sports fan, and a family guy,

Poet, writer, artist, a creator of worlds

He encouraged me to always ask why,

Taught me how to love the written word

Super Man, is what he is to me

A man with steel in his heart

The best father a man could be

Even though we live far apart

I'll always be grateful to you, Dad

For all the things you've taught me

Cherish all the memories I have

Your “Beth Buddy”, I will always be.

Heck Wayne put tears in yours my brother? I'm a weeping poet here reading these magnificent words of tribute to a man so cherished and loved by so many and especially your family. Your daughter shows here her tender love for you, the man of steel. You have done much in your life and accomplished your artistic steak with flare. The poetry runs through your veins and into your daughters here. I am so pleased to read how loved you are by a family who cares. Peace my brother and to you too Beth, you have a magnificent father here, keep showing how much he means to you in your life, he loves you as much for ever and always. Happy Father's Day my friend and fellow artist, Wayne Barrett.

Liz, your love for your dad swells in this poem. Wayne is a wonderful writer and now I know more of the person he is. There's definitely a special bond between fathers and daughters that can't be rivaled.

Awesome poem, Liz! Happy Fathers Day, Wayne!

From what I've seen and read of Wayne's paintings and writing, he's a man of many talents and a stand-up guy. This tribute is really lovely and thank you for letting us know just how amazing a dad he is as well, in addition to the sterling man behind the easel.

A perfect gift.

Yours Sincerely,

R.Q.
