What follows is a poem I rewrote and recently dedicated to the memory of Joe Cocker. "All my life, I thought I knew the taste of sweet. I now know what love means"
We took a walk in sweetened fields
That day so long ago,
Our drifting steps fell smooth as one
To feel the earth below.
The blooms of asters whispered soft
A song that lovers share,
We hummed the words in single voice
And soothed our yearnings there.
The summer sun was kind to us
Although we failed to see
Our seasons ceased to know their place
In tender reverie.
Our shadows were not strangers then,
Nor lost in solitude,
Revealing dreams in shape and curve
The nightfields once subdued.
We needed not the wooded shade
Nor mending walls of stone
For boundless sky and lightwinds called
That never stand alone.
Though life may distance sweetened fields
When seeking to fulfill...
We look within our hearts and know
Their magic lingers still.
