Sweetened Fields

A Field of Perennial Asters
A Field of Perennial Asters | Source

What follows is a poem I rewrote and recently dedicated to the memory of Joe Cocker. "All my life, I thought I knew the taste of sweet. I now know what love means"

We took a walk in sweetened fields

That day so long ago,

Our drifting steps fell smooth as one

To feel the earth below.

The blooms of asters whispered soft

A song that lovers share,

We hummed the words in single voice

And soothed our yearnings there.

The summer sun was kind to us

Although we failed to see

Our seasons ceased to know their place

In tender reverie.

Our shadows were not strangers then,

Nor lost in solitude,

Revealing dreams in shape and curve

The nightfields once subdued.

We needed not the wooded shade

Nor mending walls of stone

For boundless sky and lightwinds called

That never stand alone.

Though life may distance sweetened fields

When seeking to fulfill...

We look within our hearts and know

Their magic lingers still.

("Up Where We Belong" is sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes)

I enjoyed the soft tempo, the gracefulness and the sentiment of your poem. There is both innocence and grandeur to be found in your words. And you top it off with a richness of a love that has outlasted the flame. You are an artist.

Question: Lost love or love sustained? Love recalled with the feelings still lingering? Or does this speak of "then" and only of "our" as only the broader readership? It is a fine poem, and like "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost, it sustains some mystery...such as who was first each year to suggest mending the wall.

Such a soft and loving sense here Genna--Really beautiful work!

DnWW 2 years ago

Once again we have beautiful poetry with subtle layers and nature as surroundings or theme --- your signature. I think you have found your poet’s voice, Genna. I like the way you summoned your New England roots with the perennial asters and Frost’s ‘mending wall’ where stone fences become superfluous or invisible. ‘What miracles hath This love wrought and all that It implies?’ My man, Joe’s, timeless tune meets the poem well.

@Sujaya

Hello and welcome… it’s nice to meet you. I’m not sure what you meant by your comment, but appreciate the visit, and the time to read this poetry. Thank you.

@Mckbirdbks

Hi Mike. That is a beautiful description of this poem, Mike, thank you! I am trying in my own way to reach that level of artistry. I appreciate your kind and encouraging words, my friend. It is always such a pleasure to see you. :-)

@AlwaysExploring

Hello Ruby. I am so pleased this touched your heart. I was touched by your comment that anyone who has been in love can relate to this poem. I am grateful for your support, dear Ruby, always appreciate your visits.

@billybuc

Thank you, Bill. It’s mine, too. I hope you have an enjoyable week. :-)

@FaithReaper

Hello Faith…

Thank you, dear Faith. I still have much work to do with my poetry; it is a work in progress and a constant journey. If my words may cause people to pause and observe...to feel and think, if only for a moment… then I am humbly on my way. Thank you for the vote and the sharing. :-)

@Perspycacious

Hi there. Actually, both are interwoven within the poem as well as the “mending wall” we see here throughout New England. These are part of the “layers,” as Dana calls them, in his comment below. I love that you are asking questions. But I’m curious as to what YOU think, my friend. Thanks so much for those thoughtful comments. It’s good to see you. :-)

@MatieCoetser

Hello Martie. You have said it so well…love IS the miracle of humanity. Thank you for that very perceptive comment, dear Martie. :-)

@FrankAtanacio

Hi Frank. Thank you! You have me laughing about those initials. No, we can’t use them on this special day. My goodness; the connotations. Poor Cupid would be quite upset…not to mention, somewhat confused. :-)

@AudreyHowitt

Hello, Audrey. Your comments are treasured as I greatly admire your poetry. Thank you!

@DnWW

Thank you kind sir; that is so nice…I still think that this “voice” needs further exploration before it is completely found. And you are perceptive in that New England surroundings play a role in this poem.

I like John Robert’s voice and style…your fellow Brit, my friend. Whenever he takes over a song, it almost becomes his; from the tender, “You Are So Beautiful,” to the bawdier, “You Can Leave Your Hat On.” Like Tom Waits, Louie Armstrong and others, Joe has a voice that sounds like (as someone on the Internet once commented), “Ten miles of the worst road imaginable,” yet with soul so charismatic, we are immediately hooked. Thanks for that special comment. Hugs to you and Moll.

@Marcoujor

Hi Maria.

I am so appreciative that you enjoyed this poem. :-) Thank you. And you are as well, dear Maria. Hugs.

@AudreyHowitt

Hi Audrey. Each visit is treasured and appreciated. Thank you.

@Teaches12345

Very perceptive and thoughtful comments…they describe the poem quite well. Thank you! :-) It takes courage to love. True love is very freeing in that we don’t look for ways to hide from it or to shelter ourselves from the “magic” it provides to the soul. As Mike said above, even though the passion may not be what it was in younger years, the love still lives on and is shared in the heart. For those who have loved and lost, the gifts still live on in the memory of that love. Regardless of its circumstance, we are still more complete and blessed as human beings from the knowing of it.

How refreshing to come back to your hubs and be uplifted with such beautiful words of love, the tenderness of your verse, they fall like pedals from a rose as the scent lingers and touches our soul. Love is magical, once stung by it we are whisked into another sphere. To love is to live, give, share, shout from the roof tops, it's perfect when in the hearts and minds of two perfect lovers. Simply brilliant work dear Genna.
