Taking Care of Daddy

She’d spent her life

Learning about life and love

From her mom and dad

Who shared a pure and true love

Her mom was his high school sweetheart

And together they built a world of their own

Dad made sure she was provided for

And together they built a business

Then they were blessed

And baby made three

As the years came and went

As she grew

Each season brought new delights

And her parents’ love seemed to grow and grow

When she had grown

Home seemed a haven

To return to time after time

Then her parents reached their sunset years

And mom knew it wouldn’t be long

Before the angels came

And she worried about daddy so

Until then her parents seemed

Not to have aged a bit

They still enjoyed life

They still loved and laughed

She’d seen them dance

And together they kept each other young

Until mom’s heart gave out

And the last thing she said

Was for her to take care of daddy

It was then thet he became an old man

One who didn’t enjoy much

Trips to the cemetary

Telling her that it was just a place

To speak to her mom, his love

The house held too many memories

When she tried to tell him to move

To get on with the life he still had

He told her that nothing mattered

If his love could not be by his side

It was then that things changed

She noticed late at night

Music played and her father

Seemed to be dancing with someone

Oh, she believed that true love never died

And she knew that her mom

Was keeping dad alive

Suddenly things were different

He longed for the night

When she would come

And they could share

The love they had for one another

Lots of evenings

Dad would share his memories

Delightful pictures, music and treasures

And just before bedtime

She’d light some candles

Put a bottle of wine out

Then kiss her dad goodnight

And when she heard the music

She would smile

At the thought of them together

Meeting night after night

Some years down the line

She saw it in her dad’s eyes

Her mom was calling for him

And he was willing to go

The day her dad passed away

She wasn’t sad

She was glad for the two of them

They had been separated

Waited so very long

At last they were together

For eternity

The day she quietly buried her dad

She smiled thinking of him

Saying that this was just a meeting place

Then a strange light seemed to shine

From the sky above

Catching her breath she saw

Her mom beckoning to dad

Who headed up toward the light

The last thing of them that she saw

Was their arms around one another

And they both turned

Waved at her and walked into the light

She felt such love fill her at that moment

So happy for them

And as for her

She’d go one

But for awhile

She’d miss taking care of daddy

Touching and sentimental tale and one worthy of the devotional and loyal loves of not so long ago. Much peace.

Thank you Laurie. Actually it is the way I would have love to imagined it being for my parents. However I was only 10 when my dad died and mom had to take care of me while I was growing up. They did have such a love as depicted in this poem though.
