The Anointed is a coming of age story about 17 year old Tamar, who lives in the most Supreme Nation on Earth: the ASA (Anointed States of America). It takes place in the not-so-distant future when The Anointed take over Congress and secularism is no more.
In God's Chosen country, the Holy Bible's laws are strictly upheld. The rest of the world, known as the Heathen Nations, are considered evil and off-limits. The ASA has secured its coasts to keep Christian Soldiers safe "WITHIN GOD'S BORDERS" (the country's national motto).
When Tamar's best friend, Abigail, is found dead in the woods after reading a forbidden science book from the Old Days, there is talk of apostasy in the congregation. According to rumors, she confronted her parents about evolution, biology, the planet's real age, and other blasphemies. Heathen lies.
Tamar knows better, however. Abigail was a good girl, an intelligent girl; she must have discovered something in that book that compelled her to take such a risk.
She eventually encounters an Apostate on the run named Gabrielle, and he's being hunted down by The Anointed because he's considered dangerous. Independent thinkers can influence others- they are like wolves among sheep and must be dealt with immediately.
That fateful encounter is a turning point in Tamar's life. For the first time, she begins to question her beliefs, her parents, the Elders, and even The Anointed. She finally rouses from her stupor and begins the process of rational thinking...
As a former cult member, this book proved challenging to write. It is not easy to revisit my past, or admit it to others. From the age of 7 I was raised within the strict, mental confines of a fundamentalist religious cult that controlled me through guilt and fear.
My childhood, which should have been a time of carefree happiness, was tainted by the constant threat of Armageddon. I was not allowed to have worldly friends or participate in any after school activities. No birthdays or holidays. No thoughts of the future or college (since the end was "just around the corner"). The emotional and mental damage that I suffered led to depression, anxiety, eating disorders...the list is long.
At the age of 27, I turned my back on my religion and lost most of my friends. I was a pariah. Being in a closed cult and then going out into the world I was taught to hate was lonely, scary, and disheartening.
The Anointed illustrates the danger of religious fundamentalism, and the harsh consequences that comes to those who reject it. This story should compel young people to THINK FOR THEMSELVES and QUESTION EVERYTHING. Life is too short to be miserable.
