The Best with You

They had each other

That was what mattered

The most

Together for what seemed

Like a lifetime and more

That Valentine’s had become

A tradition they shared

All through the years

Nothing more than candles

Wine and roses

Champagne and dancing

To their old 45s

But it was a great way

To celebrate the long road

They had traveled together

That first morning

It was in autumn

That she’d seen

The boy next door

Raking all those leaves

It was in the winter

That they had built snowmen

And it was in the spring

When flowers bloomed all around

That they had exchanged

Their first I love you’s

Summertime brought their wedding

Several years down the road

And each new morning that dawned

It was like the first time they had met

Never a doubt that nighttime

Would bring them back together

When day was done

Now it seemed so many

Seasons had come and gone

But there was never any doubt

That they would stay together

Just the two of them

Not blessed with children

They were blessed

With undying love

Now as another Valentine’s

Was coming

They looked at one another

And saw only what they had seen

So many years before

When they kissed it was always

As it had been the first time

And they never went anywhere

Unless it was hand in hand

This Valentine’s he surprised her

With a roomful of red balloons

She filled the room

With scented candles

They toasted to their love

And danced the night away

It was time to reflect again

To take a walk down memory lane

He remembered and she remembered

Together they agreed

That no matter what had come before

These were the best of days

That they were experiencing now

And so much more to look forward to

As their love just grew and grew
