A Poem About The Big 4-Oh

A Poem About The Big 40-Oh

Reaching 40 is a milestone isn't it? Or maybe, for some people, it's like a millstone?

Being in your 30s still sounds pretty young, then suddenly you hit the big 40 and you think it's like a tipping point into middle age.

So imagine you're about to become 40 today? And you are throwing a party? This poem is all about that party and the happiness outside and the feelings you get inside!

‘The Big Four Oh’

The cake proclaims,

The candles lit,

That’s lots of flames

And you’ve been cuddled

And you’ve been kissed

“Blow em out, you arsonist!”

Gales of laughter

Peel through the room

As someone inhales

From a helium balloon

And whilst everyone was celebrating,

You looked on,

at Fifty waiting.

A Poll for the Over-40s

When you reached 40, did you feel over the hill?

Martie - that is just the right answer! Exactly what I wanted to read! I am 49 at the moment - great to know it's going to get even better :o)

Indeed Mohan, it's only a number :o). I think my 50th will be a humdinger!

Keith, yes age is only a number - I'm closer to 50 now than 40, repeat quietly '50 is only a number, 50 is only a number, 50.....' :o)

Oh, I felt as old as dirt when I turned 40. But believe me, life begins at 50 :)

Jools, I enjoyed your sense of humor!

What a fun poem, Jools, having been there ( ahem) I can relate to this great ditty. I always wonder what it should feel like, I suppose I don't subscribe to the ticking calendar as I still feel like a wide eyed curious child inside! Much like you, of course.

LOL age is only a number, Jools!

Great poem! (I'll probably be reading this in 20 years when I'm 40!)

Carly, don't worry 40 is the new 30, young at heart? You'll be fine. I am nearly 50, I still feel about 28 in my head.

PrairiePrincess, Yup there is some apprehension now, I am 49 in 3 weeks time, more candles....more flames....and as they say in my neck of the woods 'owl-da' (which is the way we say 'older').

What a lovely poem! I loved the way you captured those mixed feeling of happiness and a bit of apprehension about getting older. Voted up and all of them!

Mythicalstorm - glad you liked my first hub. You're still a young 'un, not yet ready to light your candles and keep a fire extinguisher handy :o), glad the poem made you smile!

This was so cute. I think it can apply to many birthdays though! I am no where near 40 yet and I already feel old! lol. You probably will roll your eyes at that, but in all honesty this was a very fun little poem that just made me smile!

Hope you are enjoying your 40s! You may also enjoy your 50s. The decades are different but quite exciting if you take on challenges and live your life with joy.

Congratulations on your first Hub. Great start!

"Don't count the candles, count the cuddles and kisses."...that's lovely!

Welcome from one just 5 days older than you (that's in hub days). Enjoyed your sonnet.

Don't count the candles, count the cuddles and kisses. Each year add them up and keep them from being blown out. I like the numeric candles, from the backside it's a much lower number. Age sometimes has it's advantage (sometimes not all the time): grandchildren; wisdom (even if it's not making the same past mistakes); appreciation of all the miracles you've been part of; and discounts (you'll learn not to be offended when offered and even boast you qualify). Everyday is a new birth. Make everday count. Look forward to each day even those that come with a larger number (just flip it around).
