The Bugle's Echo...........

Beginning as a rainy day for a funeral we
stand numb and cool
and then comes a sea change
even as the sun peaks through
or the prevailing winds
change thier minds
storm grey skies
give way for you

The words spoken echo away through
a forest of sounds
Though I would rather not listen to them
I stare at the faces but hear only my
own thoughts
Across the freshly mown grass
I watch the solumn faces
of the honor guard
deep lines in the faces of your friends
and mine too

An assortment of camouflaged
uniforms and black boots
The folding of the flag
and whispers
to your loving widow
hands in her lap
and now holding the flag
that once lay across your casket
I am going to miss you
brother

And yet we will meet each other here from
time to time will we not
You and I ?
As the last echo of the bugle flows
softly among the pines
and the granite
I am reminded of a breeze
soft and comforting
as soft as your smile

A beautiful tribute and remembrance of a brother, who meant so much in life and will always be in fondest memories in death. Thank you for sharing his sad , but precious work, and well received by all to read.

Oh I must tell you that my tears are flowing. I could envision the lined faces, the flag and even you. Such a sad time in your life. you said that you will meet him here from time to time, meaning I'm sure through your poetry. Wonderful!!!

I look out your beautiful poetic window to sadness, and goodbyes to one who served - a cherished brother. I feel the breeze and the smile of memories and let the curtain fall back. You do it so well, Ed.

O..i am feeling your pain, sir! i dearly hope that this is the worst of it - and it will begin the slow - but steady - process of healing now. You are 'one less' - but - YOU still are! i have abiding faith in your knowledge that life is for living...and enduring...and coping...

I am so sorry to have read your poems out of sequence and out of context. Moved the first time, now coming back, moved further by your beautiful account of a difficult day, a difficult loss. As the warm breeze blows across this day it carries your unwavering love for your dear brother. My heart goes out to you, Ahorseback and to your family at this difficult time.

Thanks Annie ! WE , do it so well . I have to remind myself that this ; is life ! Annie , you know there is a God ! I have seen him , he saved my brother from a certain distructive lifestyle , turned him into an angel and then took him for himself . Sometimes I think God is selfish . He... he .....!.....:-}
