The Challenge Be Still

Source

Why Be Still

Our society says we need to be in constant contact. We have cell phones, iPads, email, snail mail and land lines to keep us connected. Our acquaintances, family and friends are so important we are never quiet. But should we always be in contact? Does constant contact lead to worry?

I just called my aunt. There was no answer. Apprehension creeps into my whole body. I am an emotional wreck. Lately, every time I call without getting an answer something has been wrong with dad. When the world comes crashing down worry doesn't help. What does help is taking the challenge to be still. Challenge to be quiet in soul, mind and body. As I revisit this challenge over and over I am reminded of this wise saying, "Be still and know I am God". Stillness goes against everything in me. Got to move, or do I?

A New Adventure

Living with cancer is a roller coaster ride. I live with cancer, but it isn't who I am.

Tomorrow will be the beginning of a new adventure. I will begin radiation therapy. Will I take the challenge to be still. Will you take the challenge?

Take the challenge. Watch tension release and slide off your shoulders.

I have chosen that challenge.

The visit with the radiologist releases my fears.

Everyone has been afraid the radiation will damage my heart. Athletes depend on their hearts to be strong.

The Radiologist said, "There is less than a single digit chance that the radiation will cause heart damage". I had to have him repeat that statistic.

Perhaps we can kick this cancer completely out once and for all. Anticipating a high if the cancer is gone or a low if it isn't. Several years later cancer isn't gone, but neither am I and new treatments hold bright hopes.

I am contemplating the idea of being still. I am never still. My friend says my low energy is higher than her highest energy.

I will have to be still when I have treatments, so why not practice now.

Radiation

Radiation started and I am doing well. The tumor shrunk significantly in a short period. They put a piece of plastic in my mouth and tell me to breath in deeply. The plastic holds my breath while they shoot radiation into my chest. I have to be still. Movement would be bad.

The Challenge

Be still and know me.

Stop, listen, be still.

The world is upside down.

Clouds scud like sea billows.

Jet trail boats in the cloud sea.

Be still and know me.

Stop, listen, be still.

Go, do, accomplish, screams life.

Be in control.

Today, just one day, take the challenge.

Be still and know me.

Stop, listen, be still.

Tires mash curbs, buses passing, children hurry to school.

Parents walking. Teachers talking.

Recognize the voice. Take the challenge

. Be still and know me.

Stop, listen, be still.

Organize, clean, polish, screams life.

Dust shrouds furniture, casualty of business.

So much to do.

Be still and know me.

Stop, listen, be still.

Today, take the challenge. Today, be still

Know he can take care of everything you need.

Relief

Auntie finally answers on the 5th ring. I was so delighted we talked for more than an hour. Dad is well. It had been a busy day of doctors appointments and grocery shopping.

Peace floods my body.

Be still, let peace flood you and sustain you.

One Year Later

Tireless traveler here. Yearning to take a day and be still. Today is supposed to be the day. Once again life is fast paced. People coming, going, needing my attention. I issue the challenge once again.

If only for 10 minutes let stillness sweep over you and rest on you like a blanket. Relax and refresh.

Be Still.

Stop, listen, be still.

I don't know what to say. This was a very different ending than what I was pleasurably reading. Thank you for sharing this. I will now read your four listed hubs under the heading More Tireless. I will be thinking of you and your words in this hub and your courage.

Oh dear Pamela, Maybe I shouldn't have put in the last part. The day I took the challenge was wonderful. I was so lost in my thought as I lay on my trampoline I didn't think to take a picture of the jet that looked like a boat. I also took a nap and still slept peacefully all night. I had a CT scan that day and the doctor wasn't hopeful.

Doctors obviously don't know everything. Radiation wouldn't be possible if the cancer had spread.

Thanks for stopping :)

Be still and know . . . that He gives happy endings. I think that's a good thought for contemplation. Thank you for letting us share in your struggle; wishing you the strength to overcome.

that's the attitude...i have talked to a breast cancer patient...positive thinking doesn't help...but positive attitude does...best wishes for you and my fervent prayer...

tirelesstraveler profile image

tirelesstraveler 4 years ago from California Author

MsDora- last night I read in Max Lucado's book "Fearless"

"If the ending isn't happy then its not the end".

Your prayers and encouragement are so appreciated.:)

raciniwa- Jim Stockdale was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for 7 or 8 years. He said he had faith he would make it out. The ones who died were the optimists, who said we will be out by Christmas then Easter. They died of broken hearts. You are so right in thinking positive attitude makes the world of difference. As one whose attitude with out the indwelling of God tends to be very negative I know the difference.

Blessings :)

Magnificent, tirelesstraveler. Your narrative joined with your poetry in a mantra that was both calming and joyful, logical and magical. In one word, I call it "perfect". Be well.

Cincture of Protection

I weave the cincture of protection

from the nine threads of life:

Peace of mind

Truth of speech,

Timeliness of action

Success of deed,

Prosperity of work.

Health of body,

Courage of spirit,

Compassion of heart,

Wisdom of soul.

These nine threads be my belt

wherever I walk

That is a Celtic Prayer from my Irish heritage. A cincture is a sash usually printed with this prayer on it. I am saying it for you, friend.

I love your spirit and I am someone who has a hard time sitting still. So glad to have found your page. You provide great inpiration for looking at life with zest.

Wonderful words written so artistically. Glad you shared and I thank you.

"There is a season for all things" and there is a reason that it is so. It is the winter that spurs our love of spring and stillness that spurs our next adventure. Perhaps tranquility isn't something to be found, perhaps it lies in waiting for us to stop and breathe the stillness. As you note, there is healing there. I pray that it is so. Beautiful poem.

tirelesstraveler profile image

GTF- Your welcome.

arb- Thank you for your kind comments. I will remember that winter does indeed spur our love of spring. Yesterday morning I woke up on my left side for the first time in a month and it was spectacular. Sometimes the little things are just the deal to get you through the winter.
