The Dusty Rose

Inspired by, written about, and dedicated to my mother, Letha May Pitman

April 24,1929 - December 13,1993

We miss you, Mom!

She could grow roses
like no one else could.
She had a green thumb
that they well understood.

Outside her kitchen,
she planted, with pride,
a lone dusty rose
she could view from inside.

This little bush was the
bloomingest rose...
at least seven at once
would bud, bloom, and pose.

Lavender colored
and scented divine,
those roses kept coming
to bud and then shine.

But one day, came angels
to take her to heaven...
That day, only one bloomed,
in place of its seven.

And then, it quit blooming,
like the dusty rose knew
that the hand of its lover
had bid it adieu.

No more lovely roses
would grow there, in grace,
for the heart of the dusty rose
missed her sweet face.

What a lovely tribute to your mother, No_Clue, and so well written. She left you much too soon.

How sweet and wonderful to be able to express the beauty of your Mom as in the roses. I wrote a hub before, Called "My Mother Is My Friend." Moms are special!

drbj, thank you. She did, indeed, but between her birthday and Mother's Day, she is on my heart and mind. This is a true story, kidding!

"A mother holds your hand for a while but your heart forever." This is a quote one of my daughter's used on a card she made for my wife on Mother's day. A beautiful tribute.

Spirit Whisperer, what a lovely quote! and so true! My mom had a tough go of it here in life and our relationship was tumultuous, at best, but I sure miss her! She is on my heart. Thank you!

Lovely yet sad. Two sentient beings bidding farewell to each other.

Thank you, SilentReed, for your read and comment...It is a sad piece and yet is written with alot of love...that rose bush was an amazing thing, and whenever I was sick, she always came with one of its roses in hand. Perhaps that is why it struck me so strongly when it quit blooming all together after she passed. It was just so odd, like it knew...

Wonderful piece beautifully dedicated. Your Mom's life was WAY too short. Couldn't help but check out the dates. Reminds me of my Mom gone way too soon (68). Thank you for sharing this inspiring piece!

No_Clue, I am all choked up over here :(. I am truly sorry about your moma being gone. I couldn't bare to think of how I would react the day that time comes for my moma. Very beautiful tribute. She left a rose standing inplace to carry on her memory and that is you. Blessings and smiles :)

bella girl, I wish I could give you a big hug right now! I will tell you, losing my mom was the biggest hurt I have ever experienced. I especially miss her between her birthday and Mother's Day, and on all holidays! To write about her or do something that I know she loved is comforting, somehow...lots of love and thank you!

I followed from your titles alone and then chose this beautiful tribute to the dusty rose and your Mom to read on Mother's Day. I was just about to shut down and head off to the cemetery and plant a few flowers on the grave of my own mother. There are no coincidences. Roses were meant for her today. Thank you my new clueless friend.

BeyondMax, true story. The day she left us, there was but one single rose on that bush, and after that it quit blooming all together! It was bizarre! Thank you!
