The Epidemic Scourge

The contents of this hub may be shocking. Readers, be forewarned.

This poem was inspired by the recent deaths of several young people I knew personally, as a result of prescription drug overdose, both doctor prescribed and bought on the street, and the addiction I see ravaging the world around me. It is written in memory of these and the countless other lives lost, the lives currently being consumed, and the families being destroyed by this evil. God, have mercy on them all!

The Epidemic Scourge

It is an epidemic scourge
that ravages throughout our land...
gripping body, soul, and spirit
with it's sly, addictive hand.
Though prescribed, too freely given,
pills possess with dark allure.
They've found their way into the streets
and into hands that seek pain's cure.
Greed propels the onslaught.
Ethics pale where money flows.
Once a taste has taken over,
morals wither and craving grows.
Oxys, roxys, bars, and joy juice...
prescription drugs that take control,
sold on every street and corner,
incarcerate without parole.
First they lure, and then, they capture.
Their hunger cannot be denied...
and if allowed to take possession,
the grave they dig won't be defied.
Respecters of no age or station,
pills chain the body, heart and soul...
destroying families, life, and spirit,
exacting unrelenting toll.
They torment all, not just the addict,
drain the life from all involved,
break the hearts of those who care.
This rampant curse grows, unresolved.
It is an epidemic scourge
that ravages throughout our land...
destroying our very heart and spirit
with a virulent, unbridled hand.

bella, it is with a heavy heart that I wrote this. Drug addiction of any kind indeed destroys life, but I watch prescription drug addiction claiming more every day. It eats away at the very fabric of a soul, and is all the more dangerous because it is so accessible. I hope this finds you well...lots of love, Girlie! Thanks!

Again, my two favorite luvs, I'm happy to see you here, but I'm troulbled in this all-too-tragic nest of death and destruction's fear.

To me it's obvious the problem here. Young people are isolated, confused, tormented, preached to, sold to, told "buy this" and "look this way", "do what your told" "don't think, just do what I say." They are consumed, literally as we speak. It's no wonder so many, tragically, turn to escapes, either by drugs, or worse...

And then, all the time, the drug companies who make trillions of dollars, post their endless ads of "take this" and "take that".

I for one am going to do something about it, and I have to tell you, this easily blends with the other social causes I'm determined to fight against...

bbnix, thank you for your read and heart-felt response. This is a subject that affects our world on a personal level and causes much pain and fear and death...one that is tormenting many in our country. I am powerless in too many ways, but not powerless to raise awareness...and that is the primary purpose for this poem. There is help and hope for both the addict and those that love the addict...but if a blind eye and a deaf ear is turned, there is no hope. Again, thank you. Hugs!

MO, thank you for your read and thoughtful comment. It is a subject that weighs heavy on my heart, and needs to be addressed. Addiction cripples, maims and kills. Again, thank you! Hugs!

This is so tragic and so sad. People need to read information such as this and become more aware of the devastation that drugs can bring. It is not just the hard drugs that can be so addictive but easily accessible drugs to receive pain for instance too.

acaetnna, thank you for your read and comment. I gotta tell you, this is far more wide spread and common than most folks realize...the prescription drugs are far more dangerous, in my opinion...again, thank you!

What a great poem. As sad as the subject matter is, it's important that it be brought up. And to do it as gracefully and skillfully as you did, well, deserves a round of applause. Really. This is not only accurate but compelling. I actually have a friend that is dealing with this demon right now. Very inspiring to read. Thanks for posting.

thegoodnewzz, I thank you, thank you, thank you. This piece has been tumbling around in my head for about a month or so. My sons grew up with a girl who died of an overdose about 5 months ago, and she is but one of about 4 others that age who have died of overdose from prescription pills...it is a serious and potentially deadly issue that needs addressing. I so appreciate your read and comment and will say a prayer for your friend. ~Peace~

There is nobody free from addiction in this world. Some addictions are more socially acceptable than others. When I was growing up it was thought that there was something wrong with you if you didn't smoke and today smoking is considered a dirty habit. Alcohol alone does more damage to human beings on all levels physically, emotionally and spiritually than all the drugs put together. Then there are those people who are envied for being addicted to sex and work. People are still focussing on the physical symptoms of disease and not the underlying emotional and spiritual causes. Drugs are the symptom of a disease that Man is suffering from and nobody seems to consider that there might be an underlying emotional root cause for the physical symptoms. When people start addressing the cause for their dis-ease within the world without will be just fine. Thank you for sending me off on that rant. I feel better now. Love and kudos to you No_Clue.

Yes, a very dangerous addiction. One that does not discriminate and affects both poor and wealthy. I have known many professionals who would talk trash about drug addicts and then scarf down their prescription pills! This was a great poem and written well. Thanks for tackling such a tough and maybe unknown subject!

Spirit Whisperer, I know, in my heart, that you speak the truth here. Addiction of any kind is but a symptom of an underlying emotional and spiritual disease. This issue of Pills is one that needs to be addressed, however. It is insidious and somewhat innocuous, and yet it's taking control of many young lives and leading them on a path to destruction and death while the pharmaceutical companies, doctors who prescribe them, and "pill mills" get rich on the proceeds.

dallaswriter, thank you. It is true that if a drug is "prescribed by a doctor" it is somehow acceptable. What most folks fail to realize is the power of the pill to overtake the taker...and pills are big business!

No_Clue, Your poem is very touching and speaks of the deep lack of direction felt by so many human beings. I recently read an article about the growing numbers of homeless teens. The person being interviewed was the director of a homeless shelter for teens. They said that the number of people they served in 2009, was just over 1000. In 2010 they had over 8,000 and she said that by 2013 their shelter would be up to 20,000 if the current growth continued. She was pleading for help, because she said they already are having problems funding the number of teens coming through their facility.

It troubles me greatly that we live in a world where so many are neglected.

Thank you for this wonderful poem. I believe awareness is the beginning of change.

Blessings and light to you...

No_Clue, You did a good job with this. The pictures had more of a "shock" factor than the prose itself. I am too familiar with drug addiction that has been around me in my life as well. Being strong in thought to say "I will not be addicted" are words that have to be connected with action. Support from the right sources can be given, but simple willpower without a plan to a lifestyle alternative is not going to work. Attending meetings where addicted people go is only a small motivator. It is the time when a person gets "alone" and the mind takes over that the need or desire to use comes to focus. We as humans have free will which gives us choices. The physical response to a chemical response is what takes over, and then the mind can forget- unless the strong will power and desire to change is there. The experience of kicking a "dependence" I could only find deep within my own spirit, and the Almighty God in my life became a better addiction.

CreatePerfection, thank you for your read and thoughtful comment. It is deeply disturbing to my spirit that so many are neglected in life, as well. It is a complex problem for sure, and awareness is the first step to change. Again, thank you.

Bravo, brave and painful topic my dear friend. I salute your honesty. Drugs of any description write their own death warrant if over dosed. With the price of tobacco and alcohol going through the roof, could it be that as a Nation we are making our young ones toy with drugs which are now easy to come by. I have seen such terror that drugs inflict in families. And have had some and still do with my son. We need to sit up and taste the whiskey as a Nation to tackle this drug issue which is now out of hand. x

Tragic but excellent write. I too have seen young people taken in this way, it always seems so futile - such a waste of a young life - unfortunately some are driven by such aweful happenings in their lives they see no other way forward. It makes me feel so helpless seeing the results which are devastating. Well done :-)

Powerful deep poem! These pills business is the easiest way to kick off the problem to the curb without even trying to resolve it... Such a tragic plague of our age!
