The Gifts of Faith - The Rainbow (Ch. II)

Faith
Faith | Source

As the colors became more brilliant, the yellow hues seemed to separate from the rainbow, reaching to the earth in a gentle golden rain. Even Kitty stopped chasing butterflies as the earth-bound rainbow shower changed from gold to white then gold again before settling in the meadow just ahead.

Faith watched in awe as a shimmer of white swept across the land, moving towards her. A vision appeared inside the glow. A vision Faith had never experienced before now. Although Faith had grown accustomed to seeing the souls of people glowing just beneath the skin’s surface, this vision appeared in reverse.

The Revelation

As the glow moved closer to Faith and Kitty, the golden rainbow shower dissipated, returning to the sky high above then disappeared entirely. Within the white mist, a silhouette was forming. Suddenly, the tell-tale butterflies in Faith’s belly stopped as if they’d found their resting place. It was all clear to her now. Faith was witnessing the person who ‘could have been’ inside the soul that lived on and she knew exactly who was making her way to where Faith stood.

“Hope”, Faith muttered to herself. As the image moved closer, the person inside the soul stepped out of the white glow that enveloped her. With long dark hair and eyes the color of an azure sea, the woman who came forth seemed to barely skim the blades of grass as she brought her presence to Faith.

“It’s good to see you again, Faith.”

“Again? I don’t understand.” Faith had never come face to face with the beauty before her, but felt she’d been a part of her life all along.

“I’ve been with you since before you were born. You know me and have felt me all of your life. It’s just now that I’m able to reveal myself to you. You have a gift. It confuses you and costs you friends. You feel lonely as the result. That will change now. You’re old enough to accept your gift – and me.”

“I’m not sure I understand.” Faith was not afraid of this beautiful soul, rather she felt they were one, but she was still too young to decipher the meaning or the connection.

“Come with me.” With outstretched hand, the woman who had come forth through the shimmer of white led Faith to a nearby shade tree.

Kitty gave up her butterfly chase and followed them to rest underneath the canopy and settled in to take a well-deserved nap.

“As you know, my name is Hope. What you don’t know is I was the child that Mom and Dad never knew. I was stillborn; however, a part of my soul lingered in the womb. Mom and Dad grieved, but God has a special assignment for me.”

Faith sat silently while the butterflies began to stir once again in her tummy. These butterflies felt different. Yes, change was imminent, but this time the change was felt within her soul. This moment would change Faith’s destiny. She felt it with all her being.

“Faith, by the time you came along, Mom and Dad were not so sure you would live, just as our sister and brother and myself didn’t make it into this earthly life, at least not for long. They prayed and prayed and prayed. You are named after their prayers. They had faith that God would finally bless them with a child that could handle the stresses of today’s world. That’s why a part of my soul was left in the womb. God and I wanted to answer Mom and Dad’s prayers. You gained strength from me and I gained purpose from you. Together we have been put on Earth to see what others don’t see. We are here to bring Hope and Faith.”

Faith took all this in and knew her sister was right. Now it was all starting to make sense.

Hope continued. “My soul lied sleeping. I didn’t even realize it until you were conceived 15 years after my death. It was then that I came alive in spirit. My mission was to make sure you made it through the pregnancy and your entrance into this world. I came alive to answer Mom and Dad’s prayers and to help you with the special gift you have been given. You see souls. People don’t understand. They call you a freak. But you have a purpose on this earth. You see the good in people. Because I was left behind, I can see the darker souls in addition to the good ones. Together, we will accomplish your purpose. You are destined for great things.”

This was a lot for 6-year old Faith to absorb, although it felt true and right. Now she had a better understanding of her ability to see souls and foretell imminent changes. Hope was here to help her deal with the varying degrees of her visions and to fine tune her gift.

The Rainbow

As Faith was taking in all she’d heard, a light shower began to bring them back to reality. The sun was shining as the rain fell and a rainbow appeared on the horizon. Faith turned to marvel at the pastel colors streaking the blue sky.

When she returned her gaze to where Hope sat with her back to the tree, she found herself alone with Kitty.

The butterflies had left Faith’s tummy.

She and Kitty headed for home but not without stopping to pick a bouquet of Mom’s favorite flower, Lily of the Valley.

A perfect example of what I have been talking about regarding introductions. The first two paragraphs were exquisite, Sha! That is writing at its finest, the best I have seen from you. Well done my friend. You are growing leaps and bounds before our very eyes. :)

I am in a busy city pub but I had to read it on my phone. I would definitely buy the book. My favourite genre and beautifully done.

Coming from you, Sensei Bill, that means the world. I loved Faith when I first created her, but then I got stuck. I started chapter 2 about a month ago but got stuck again. Today, after reading your blog, I just started writing. She spoke to me once I took her out of seclusion.

You're the best. I love you so much and I love who you are!

Deep and thought-provoking story. Love the metaphoric angle.

bravewarrior profile image

Anna, it's my favorite genre, too. Unfortunately I need to write other 'stuff' before I can expect to make a living off fiction. Just the fact that it takes a long time to discover the soul of the story, then give it momentum. I really would like to make something of this one. We'll see how it goes!

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 3 years ago from Central Florida Author

Martie, when I wrote part one you told me it wasn't a short story because there was no dialogue. That make me think twice about chapter two. I don't know how far I will go with this story. I guess it's all up to Faith!

Sha,

I could feel this writing as absolutely smooth and flowing...no evidence of being stuck whatsoever. You are sponge-like in your receptivity...Bill inspires you and Martie incites you and oila...as George Michael would sing " Well, you gotta have FAITH...!"

You have nailed it...I love this...enjoyed reading it with your beautiful musical selection and eagerly await the next chapter. Fiction becomes you! Voted UP and Awesome! Love, Maria

Magical, Sha!

You have us hooked into you story, at this point. We will be bugging you for MORE!!

The pictures were perfect with just the right amount of mystery and the music is spiritual. Words, pictures and music--the perfect ensemble!

Your story line is refreshing and new. It is great that you have opened yourself up to new ideas and you are finding your path to express yourself.

Congratulations on a Part II, well done!!

DJ.

Beautiful and magical. Very good writing from you today. It took three tries to read this, I kept getting interrupted. Definitely worth trying to get it all read.

Very magical story here. I am so glad you have brought to us part II and I look forward to where Faith goes from here ...

Your words really did create such a beautiful visual in one's mind ... taking us right there with Faith and coupled with your imagery and moving music, again magical.

Up and more

God bless, Faith Reaper

DJ, thank you so much for your kind words. I will be continuing Faith's story. Hopefully this time it won't take me well over a month to come up with chapter 3!

Becky, I'm glad you came back to read. I know how interruptions can leave you forgetting what you were doing. At least it's that way with me!

Bobbi, I'm glad my little story was able to touch you so. It seemed to take flight once I sat down and started writing. I was uncertain of the conversation Faith and Hope would have, but I quit thinking and let them speak.

Faith, if my words can paint a picture in the reader's mind, then the tips Bill gives us are serving this writer well. I'm pleased with the responses so far. Thank you!

Sha, I had to read this story again. As it is, it is a short story. The message I got was that Faith gives purpose to Hope and Hope gives strength to Faith. Your dialogue is perfect. As a reader I love this story as it is, but as a coach for short-story writing, which does not mean I can do what I know should be done, I can see what should be done to turn this into a brilliant series of profound short stories. The potential I see in this actually excites me; we can discuss this via email.

Oh Shauna what a truly wonderful story. I love it and cannot wait to see what is in store for Faith in the next chapter. I came across the third chapter but then realised I'd missed out this one.

Loved it and vote both 1 and 2 onto my FB page A Brand New Dawn.

Now ten another cuppa before I settle down to read the next one. Lots of love Shauna from my little corner of Wales.

DreamerMeg, I'm so pleased you like this story. I've written and posted five chapter so far. Chapter six should be coming soon. I'm starting to feel my characters speak to me. This is a slow process. Ah, yes, the much needed addition of Hope. No more Pollyanna; now she gets to see the dark side, too. Which is good; it does SO much to keep one from getting blindsided.

Off to #3....

I really enjoyed this follow on to your first story/chapter. The great thing is that it makes some of us return to our own childhood, and then there are echoes of Faith hidden there. I like the way you are writing this too: the tone is soft and gentle, capturing the spirit of Faith.

Ah, Paula you melt my heart. I think the story will make more sense if you read it through. Thank you for doing so.

Unfortunately that's not how it goes when it takes me so long to post between chapters. Once I finish and morph this into a novel, the reader won't have to backtrack to understand each subsequent post.

Shauna, You never cease to amaze me! Do you know how much comfort this book will bring to parents that suffered through the loss of a child? My cousin had a baby that died of S.I.D.S. At his funeral my very religious aunt told me that she knew Taylor was an angel the first time she held him in her arms. She went on to say that she knew he was never meant for this world. This is a very interesting story that is well written and full of emotion. This is not my favorite Genre, but i will tell you that once it's published ( it will be published), then know I am one of the (many Im sure..first in line.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 20 months ago from Central Florida Author

Jenn, I love that you're reading this despite the fact that it's not your favorite genre.

Your aunt sounds like an amazing woman. She has beautiful thoughts about Taylor. Very comforting.
