The Girl from Yesterday

She was the girl

Who kept him dreaming

Remembering when they’d first met

The little red-headed child

With baby blue eyes

And strawberry lips

How tight she would hold on

With sticky chubby hands

To him who was so entranced

Onwards through the years

The two of them

Growing up together

Kissing her fears away

Going through the school years

Her sweet sixteen

When she told him

I love you

Where did the time fly?

When did their love stall?

He was haunted by her memories

By the last years together

The high school prom

The passion they shared

The dreams they dreamed together

Vowing one to the other

He wondered if he had let go of her hand too soon

Encouraged her to strike out alone

Not telling her he would always be near

Somewhere along the way

Somewhere her blue flashing eyes

Had stopped shining

Love had begun drifting

Drifting and he couldn’t stop it

The last time he remembered

Their picnic on the hill

When he vowed to love her

For ever more

She had stood with the setting sun

Making her red hair blaze

Tears coursing down her cheeks

She didn’t say a word

She just turned and ran

As he stood hurt and surprised

By morning she was gone

From his life and he had never felt so all alone

Now as time moved on

She filled his very soul

Was it all a dream?

Was it all a lie?

But he loved her and couldn’t forget her

He wondered if he ever would

Then came the day

Unexpectedly their eyes met

And he froze with racing heart

For a moment she frowned

Then continued on her way

She didn’t recognize him anymore

And day faded into the black of night

This made me tear up, so sad. Lost love is so very devastating when it only happens to one. Can one ever forget? I hope so. I love your story poetry, one of the best on HP.
