Lessons of Love and Friendship: Find them in The Little Prince
By Mirna Santana
The Little Prince was written by Antoine the Saint Exupery, a French writer and pilot. The book was published in 1943. This book has been one of my favorite books perhaps since I was about 11 years old. I can always find a lesson, inspiration, or a reason to smile while reading it. Like the Little Prince says, if you have a bad day, you can always look forward to the sunset. This book is one of my many sunsets and so are my friends.
In a way the Little Prince is not a book for kids, though usually is sold as such. It is a treatise about humans and humanity. It teaches us to appreciate the essence of life.
What are the essential things that top the list of important things for The Little Prince? Some examples, without any particular order are: love, friendship, ideas, the essence of a person, the color of a wheat field, the stars, the mountains, someones' smiles, and the essence of being humans. If you have not read this story carefully, I strongly recommend it to you. Because, I believe that when the Little Prince tame you--as it once did to me... you will be changed forever!
On Friendship: The fox says “For me you are just like a hundred thousand other little boys...But if you tame me, we’ll need each other. You’ll be the only boy in the world for me. I’ll be the only fox in the world for you...”
“I am beginning to understand the Little Prince says...there is a flower..She is not like a thousand other flowers, she has tamed me..” I am unique to her and she is unique to me.
Friendship is worth all the troubles...because one goes in life gathering such wonderful memories, and a few tears are really nothing. Yet that too is part of it...because it means the other matters to us--and most likely we do matter to them too.
When the fox and the Little Prince get ready for their departure from each other, the fox weeps...and said to the Little Prince that from that day on, the color of the wheat field that used to be non-relevant to him, would remind him of a little boy whose hair was like the golden color of the wheat fields. As with all our friends, who grant us gifts, some of which we are not able to see...the fox granted the Little Prince a gift. Here is my secret, the fox said, it is quite simple: “One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.”
“The important thing is what can’t be seen...” said the Little Prince to the pilot. “It is the same for the water you gave me”....And we all know in our hearts what our friends have given us...and I am not talking about things but about moments to remember.
PS. Antoine De Saint Exupery dedicated The Little Prince to Leon Werth or to Leon when he was little. With his permission, I will dedicate it to you now, and to you when you were little.Thank you for being someone’s friend. And finally, I dedicate it to you, you know who you are! Thank you for being my friend. Please look up to the stars...I am sending you smiles!

If you need a sunset
The Little Prince is here too. Antoine De Saint Exupery dedicated his book to a man who would not had been able to buy it. His friend Leon Werth, was living on the streets of France. He was hungry and cold and needed to be comforted.
