Chapter Three

To read Chapter Two: http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Lot-Chapter-Two

Tim was feeling very desperate all he could think about was getting a drink. It had been five years since Tim tasted alcohol. It was almost losing Lisa that had brought him around. During their first few years of marriage Tim was a heavy drinker. It started shortly after his brother Tom was killed in a car accident.

His parents were distraught, Tim did not get much attention when Tom was alive after he was gone it got much worse. His father quickly drowned in a bottle of misery. His mother was heavily medicated after Tom was gone and existed in a zombie like state most of the time. This gave Tim the opportunity to take a few of his mom's pills and a little bit of dad's alcohol and medicate himself into a stupor. He did not think much about it when he was a youth to him it all fell under the banner of partying.

Lisa who had been Tim's girl since they were nine stuck by him until it was time for high school graduation. They had a great summer that year but towards the end of August of that golden year of freedom Lisa had a talk to Tim. She would be leaving for college in September and was going to be thousands of miles away from Tim. She loved Tim very much but between the distance and the fact that Tim was high or drunk most of the time she decided to carry on with the relationship would not be helpful for her or Tim. Tim took the news like it didn't matter but inside his heart was devastated. Since he was a little kid he never imagined a world without Lisa, he loved her so much that he realized that trying to hold on to Lisa at this point would probably drive her away forever. The rest of the summer they did not mention it much and after a long and emotional goodbye the young couple were separated for the first time.

It was during this same summer that Bill had asked out Peggy. Peggy and Lisa was best friends and Lisa was Tim's girl which meant that Bill spent a lot of time among them. He was best friends with Tim's brother Tom and felt like Tim was his little brother. He tried to keep Tim's head on straight but that is difficult with a headstrong teenager.

Peggy had always had a "crush" on Bill. Bill had left for the Army for a few years and when he returned Peggy was in a tizzy over him. Although Bill was eight years older than Peggy he was quite smitten with the young lady. Bill had always been a respectable young man right up to knocking on Peggy's door and asking her father for permission before he asked Peggy out on a date. Peggy's father liked Bill and happily gave his consent. Bill's father and Peggy's father both belonged to the same lodge so he was eager for such a good match for his Peggy. Bill worked full time, he had his own car, possibly the nicest in town and was just an overall good guy.

This fateful summer saw the beginnings of one beautiful relationship and the ending of another. All these memories ran through Tim's mind this afternoon. Laid off, he could not believe it this boatyard was the only work Tim ever knew. Bill was working at the boatyard laying up fiberglass making decent money and he pulled a few strings to get Tim hired. Tim lived up to his employment requirements but once that bell rang it was straight to the bar. He had moved from his mom's medications to sniffing cocaine. He even made a little money on the side selling it too. Tim was a big man in town physically and had a pretty strong reputation as one to not take offense with. Now twelve years later and clean for five years all he could think about was getting high and getting drunk.

"Tim what's going on how are you doing?" Bill said after searching all over the yard for him.

"I'm OK Bill. I am not sure what I am going to do though." said Tim looking at Bill a little perplexed "what are you going to do bro?"

"Come in my office we need to talk." Bill said walking towards the office.

They went into the office which was quite luxurious, Bill also met clients and gave them tours of the plant so appearances were important to retain the image the company wanted portrayed. After sitting in the plush leather chairs Tim said "Bill how long have you known?'

"I found out for certain last night." Bill said "Since the union has been sniffing around Jonathon has been thinking about just moving the whole operation."

"The unions is that what this is about." said Tim "Most of the guys are happy with things just as they are. The union does not have a chance in the yard bill."

"That's part of it Tim but not all of it. Costa Rica is a beautiful place and Jonathon thinks it will impress the clients. Plus the labor costs will be cut in half not to mention taxes and insurance and thousands of other ways to cut costs." Bill said running his hand through his hair "This is a business Tim and with this recession we cannot sell the boats for the same money we could in the past."

"Yeah I can understand that." said Tim "what are you going to do Bill."

"Well kid that's what we need to talk about." Bill said " I am going to Costa Rica with the company Tim."

"You are going to move to Costa Rica does Peggy know?" Tim said

"No Tim she doesn't know. She isn't going. I have been thinking about this for a few years now." Bill said glancing towards the bar in the corner but knowing that having a drink in front of Tim would be cruel. "I want kids Tim and Peggy just refuses. I am not getting any younger and I want kids that's it if she does not want to have a family then I need to move on."

"Oh my god Bill are you serious. When did you decide this? Jesus Bill this is a messed up day." Tim said collapsing his head into his hands "It's like the whole world is coming apart."

"It's not over yet Tim I need a favor." Bill said somewhat pitifully "You know I signed for your mortgage Tim. You know I have done hundreds of favors for you right."

"Sure Bill I will do whatever you need bro you just need to ask" said Tim looking up into Bill's eyes. "Bill I owe you my life."

"Well you have told me you owe me one about a hundred times." Bill said smiling "I need to get my name off of your mortgage Tim"

"OK I will try to refinance but what is it Bill you don't trust me?" Tim said

"Its not that, I want to buy something in Costa Rica. I am leaving the house here to Peggy" Bill said "with two mortgages I will not be able to get a third"

"I will try this afternoon when we get out of work. I'll stop by the bank and apply for a refinance." Tim said seeming a little confused, "Well I better get back to work Bill I won't be able to say that for much longer."

"OK kid we will talk later. Bill said getting up to walk Tim to the door as he could not wait to attack the bar voraciously.

Tim walked out of the office towards his work area thinking "God what am I going to do. I need strength Lord please. What am I going to tell Lisa."
