Art and Poetry: The Map of You

The Art of Female Form

As a youngster growing up in South India, I was immersed in the lyrical ballads of Tamil Cinema. The melodious songs that featured in every film I watched had me hooked. Tamil is an expressive and ancient language that is rich is metaphor and simile. The songwriters were balladeers of the highest order in that era. The hero often wooed his heroine with rich, melodious and meticulously crafted song numbers that played over and over on radio.

Even though they are from the land of the Kama Sutra, there is something coy and cosy about these songs. There is subtle innuendo, soft allusions and hidden meanings that became more apparent to me as I grew older.

By osmosis, I must have absorbed thousands of those songs that enriched my language and imagination. I can recite many from memory. When I became comfortable and fluent in English, I was able to call upon such the allusion rich verse that stoked my senses into my own writing.

Many of these songs featured yearning and appreciation of the female form. ( Needless to say almost all these songwriters were men!). To my teenage mind, such subtle eroticism was appealing.

Perhaps it is in the memory of those melodies that 'The Map of You' was born...

When I came across the paintings of Rob Hefferan they seemed a fitting compilation to complement the words. I am also proud that Rob was born not too far from where I live now in NorthWest England and exhibits in Manchester where I work.

The Map of You

There is mystery and magic

Beauty spots that defy logic

In the Map of you

I want to visit places

Survey treasure maps and traces

In the Map of you

Moonlight shines from crystal eyes

Lighting up my misty skies

In the Map of you

Arching eyebrows feign surprise

Lashes beckon me new highs

In the Map of you

From the Oasis of your lips

Oh this weary traveller sips

In the Map of you

Unknown paths for me to ponder

When cloudscape teases yonder

In the Map of you

I long to scale the heights

Take in all the wondrous sights

In the Map of you

Navigate through the rapids

Visit parks designed by Cupids

In the Map of you.

Gentle peaks and luscious valleys

Intrigue lurks in perfumed alleys

In the Map of you

There’s danger but no malice

In this wonderland of Alice

In the Map of you

There is mystery and magic

Beauty spots that defy logic

In the Map of you

I want to visit places

Survey treasure maps and traces

In the Map of you...

Drawing his inspiration from the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Rob's beautifully observed paintings are a visual delight. The realistic renderings of the characters, the lighting, the colour schemes and the mood the works create - all show the assured hand of a true master at work.

Rob uses acrylic, oil and pastels to create his body of work. Born in Warrington, Cheshire in the UK, Rob had a preternatural artistic talent that he pursued single mindedly. After an uninspiring school life, he found his calling via Padgate art school and subsequently went to University to study art. Perhaps finding the formal education a hindrance rather than help to his natural talent, Rob pursued his career as a full time artist and left the University after a year.

His first solo exhibition was a roaring success and he sold out all his paintings, giving him the confidence to set about his body of work. Both a commercial artist and a portrait painter, Rob's work has gained fandom throughout the world.

His online gallery is at Rob Hefferan.

How do you do that, Docmo...manage to so exactly describe the mystery, the undescribable emotion that defies all logic in love. Each and every word, each segment of this piece is a visual, emotional painting of the most beautiful, ethereal expression of love. You make it real and touchable. The musical choice says it perfectly in another dimension that illustrates the fact that you surely know what you speak of. In a million years, I could never say it better. If I had an art museum, this would have a special place of it's own.

Ai-yi-yi! I have to save this in a special place for our winter in South Dakota. Good Grief Mohan, you make poetry a physical experience sometimes (most times). In another place and time, you would be the male version of Sheherazade, kept behind a locked door and made to read poems like this every night, all night long.. and the Art....amazing! ".....scale the heights" wow!

KDuBarry03 4 years ago

Docmo, you are a true poet and it shines in every stanza of this inspiring and visual poem. Very beautifully done :)

What a wonderful thought, Dotti. Me, a male Scheherazade, staying up all night reciting poetry to a Queen! I think there is a story in there somewhere. A modern Arabian Nights...

You know of course that you are totally amazing? This hub from start to finish is a work of art...."soft allusions and hidden meanings" waft throughout this hub.

"There is mystery and magic" everywhere in this hub, from your beautiful opening video to the closing artwork by Rob Hefferan. I have to say Mohan, you really know how to pick 'em and you really know how to touch the heart and, well, other places (can I say that on HP?)

This is just superlative. Voted everything except funny, pinned and shared. Because of you and this fabulous work I created a Poetry Board on my Pinterest. And, since I'm rambling on and on, might as well tell you I can't imagine how I missed this all those months ago.
