Night of the Fires.........

As often now many years later
I think of all we lost in the fires and I
But then flames are unforgiving when
they finally burn down to die

Watching the flames our eyes watering
the heat of the fire intense
We lost everything didn't we
wasting these chances makes little sense

Did we lose our house ...our home
all our possessions and more
How did we survive .........would we crawl away...
gasping toward burning doors

But No...... no house nor home would burn
only a chance was lost
No emptying the foundation no
charred remains to toss

Our chances were all that was consumed
sitting by the outdoor flame
Where a father and son sat together
only silence would remain

Where we could have shared everything
...anything between the flames curled
We chose to watch the dying flames in
silence you and I our own little world

The distance between people seemingly untouched by emotion ........they exist in each others lives........and for what reasons .....for all intents and purposes they are strangers .
And how many times do we watch as the love between father and son , mother and daughter ........husband and wife.......simply fade away in fires of silence .
Ever more I realize that there are comfortable silences and there are just silences .....all consuming flames that destroy everything as they burn away to ashe.......

It is extremely sad when members of a family lose each other. It has happened within my extended family several times and its just heartbreaking to see and watch. Nice poem ahorseback and very enlighting.

You are so right and I see it around me every day.

My boyfriend and his brother are prime examples. I have tried to get them to speak and sort their differences out but it just seem to get worse as time passes.

I hope it gets better before it's too late.

Very telling, very true poem. I won't forget the "fires of silence" anytime soon.

Binaya , Thank you , We would all do well to embrace those closest to us forever . Right or wrong an open and vocalized love is always a blessing.....:-}

Cardisa , I came from a large and extended family , I never see the need for rivalries , Or distances between loved ones, why do people do that? You must be a blessing to anyones family , you have such a gift of compassion ! I see that in you, if they leave it up to you they could close that distance between them I know!

Hugs for my favorite Jamaican Beauty!.....He he .

Paradise , you are so kind ! This was about the distance between two people who couldn't talk enough about their love , can you imagine that ?Father and son so distant. We were lucky to have made peace before it was too late though , and who would we be if we wern't forgiving and compassioned? Thank you for sharing always.

Would that the flames of the fire sear the wounds hidden there where the pain of silence flows.... I really like this one! Thank you.
