Twins can be Sneaky

I was a ninth grader attending Grandview Middle School. I was dating a nice boy that I'd had a crush on since the 7th grade. Dating at this age basically meant meeting up at activities like: rollerskating, basketball and football games or co-ed parties which were supervised by parents.

Tom caught me at my locker after lunch one day and asked me if I'd meet him at the Mound Highschool basketball game the following Friday night. I excitedly accepted his offer and we discussed details. I would meet him around 6:30PM in the upper corner of the bleachers where the ninth graders always sat.

I thought about the date with Tom all week long. I was having a hard time focusing on anything else, like my homework. What would I wear? My hip hugger pants or my bell bottom corduroys? What would he wear? I loved when he wore that t-shirt with the peace sign on it. His arms looked so big and strong in that. I hope he wears his brute cologne, it smells so sexy. Would he put his arm around me? I had butterflies in my stomach just thinking about him and our date night.

The week dragged on and I felt like the weekend would never come. Finally, my alarm went off, it was Friday. I took a shower and got ready for school. I felt a little under the weather and had the sniffles but nothing that would stop me from going to school and going on my big date. As the school day went on, I was feeling worse and worse. When I got home, I fell into my bed and decided to take a little cat nap. Hopefully resting for an hour would make me feel better. When I woke up, I felt even sicker. I told my twin sister that I didn't think I could go to the game. I asked her if she would let Tom know I wasn't feeling good and would call him tomorrow. It was really depressing watching Laura getting ready for the game. Why did I have to get sick tonight of all nights?

My Twin is Busted

I was thrilled when I started feeling better around 7:15. I asked my dad if he'd drop me off at the game. I walked into the gymnasium and started for the bleachers. My eyes were searching for Tom and the rest of the gang. Halfway up the bleachers I could make out another girl sitting next to my boyfriend. "Does he have his arm around her?" I was freaking out. Once I got up close and looked, there was my twin sister sitting next to Tom. By this time, Laura and her friends that knew about the trick, started giggling. I gently informed Tom that Laura was sitting next to him, not me. His face turned beet red as Laura got up and I took my rightful place. I still hear about the trick Laura played on Tom and I at every class reunion.

Brute??? If yo had been near enough to Tom and he was wearing that it would have cured your cold (and killed any flies that might be around and stripped the paint off the door to the school and and and...)

Remind me never to mess with a twin.

I once knew a girl who was a twin. She was called Ellen. She was very cute, but strangely enough, I never really fancied her twin... I don't know why. Harry was a really nice guy, too.

The poor guy was probably marked for life. He may even have multiple personalities to deal with twin switches. lol

Sunnie Day 5 years ago

Dear Minne,

How very funny..poor guy..Was this the only time you switched? If I was a twin..I know I would have been doing some switching in my younger days..lol

We have a set of identical twin boys at school I have known them the last three years and still can not tell them apart. Poor things one may come in for a scrap and I am saying you just left and are back again so soon. Of course it was his brother..They always laugh and correct me..Thanks for a fun story. I am still laughing at Ian's comment above..hahaha

On weekends I usually dress incognito, in other words I change my appearance around to what I would normally wear during the week, especially if I'm running errands. I remember a Saturday I was doing laundry and one of my students was waiting for his mom. This kid was a real nightmare during class.

I walked by him and wouldn't say anything, he would just look at me. On Monday he asked me if I had a twin that looked like me when he was at the laundromat. I asked if she said hello and he said no, she just kept walking. I said, "Oh that's my sister, that's how she is."

That was really me but I didn't feel like saying hi to him because after his behavior in school I was NOT in the mood for him especially when I saw how quiet he was and that's NOT how he behaved in school.

I heard of twins doing this...what would of happened if you were still sick and didn't make the game? lol

Twilight Lawns-I can't believe I though Brute smelled good but it was pretty popular back in the day. I really liked cologne when I was younger but I don't think men need it. I like the natural smell of a man now. Very funny that you weren't attracted to Harry. LOL

No, but he did want me to wear a name tag-(LOL)Thanks for reading Neeleshkulkarni, I appreciate it:)

Hyphenbird-I know, I felt so bad for him, especially in ninth grade when being cool and popular is so important. I'm quite sure it hurt his ego a little bit but he was a really good sport about it. I can't believe he didn't break it off with me right then and there.

We did do a lot of switching Sunnie Day. We even switched classes with eachother but the teachers never figured it out. We especially liked to switch classes where one twin was better at the subject.

You little trickster LeeWalls. I love that story. I think that was a very brilliant way to handle that situation, especially when he was a brat in school. I guess any of us can use the excuse that we have a twin. Thanks for reading my hub, I appreciate it:)

You tricksters :-P Had to laugh at hip huggers, bell bottoms and Brute. I was once sent home from school for wearing bell bottoms in fact when I attempted to enter school for the start of my senior year the principal was standing at the front door and told me to just turn around and don't come back until I got a haircut. Such a fun time :-) Peace!! Tom

Stu From VT 5 years ago

Oh, such cruelty. I think this is a little over the top as practical jokes go. I hope you gave Laura a good dressing down.

Hi Vietnam. Ya, tricks are just part of what makes twinship so fun. I bet they've fooled grandpa a time or two. :)

Hi Mrs.J.B. Let's just say it took Tom a few weeks to shake it off. You know how important it is to be cool at that age. All in all, he was a really good sport. It's funny how he loves talking about this story comes at our HighSchool reunions. Now it's a fun and great memory for all of us.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 5 years ago from Minnesota Author

I can't believe they sent you home for wearing bell bottoms. That was pretty much my whole wardrobe at the time and everyone wore them to school. I would so love seeing a picture of you with the long hair. Loved your stories Tom:) Isn't it fun going down memory lane?

Stu-Let's just say it wasn't a pretty scenario upon returning home that night. She got an earfull from me, the older twin. LOL

What was that old comic strip about identical twin sisters who used to do that sort of thing all the time?

The Jackson Twins?

Ha, yeah well I'm old so I guess we sort have paved the way for folks not to be bothered with the hair and clothes thing:-P I remember they said I was a distraction. Imagine that. As for the hair I've come full circle and have it long again and now I have people say I look like David Crosby, which cracks me up. It is funny thinking about those days!

Such fun times, hip huggers, bell bottoms and brute. Your story does bring back some memories, did you go out with that boy again, and I must admit my sister would have received a physical ear bashing, never mind a verbal one. There must have been fun times when you did it though?

Hi Will-I can't come up with a comic strip about twins. All that comes to mind is the Patty Duke Show which was about cousins that looked alike. Sorry, other than that, I can't think of it.

Thanks for paving the way my friend, I appreciate it immensely! As for the hair thing, I think you need to send me an email with your photo. I love David Crosby's hair. Do you sing as well. LOL

Steph, are you kidding, she sure did get it but good when we got home. I was so mad and embarrassed for him and me. Yes, he and I continued to go out. He was really a good sport about it. Thanks goodness he saw beyond this experience.

Hey Frog-Hey, good lookin or not, you are either born a twin or not. LOL And by the way, No, I didn't, Laura my twin did. She's the sneaky one on this trick, not me.

Linda, this story reminds me of a set of identical twins I went to school with. They would switch classes but only on test days. There were a couple of classes they had together and that's when the rest of the faculty figured it out.

This made me smile. I went to school with identical twin boys, very handsome, tall and clever - I think that was when I realised you could be in love with 2 boys at the same time! :-)

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 5 years ago from Minnesota Author

Hi catgypsy. Being a twin is so much fun and it is nice to have a stand in. For instance, she would break up for me via phone as I didn't want to hurt feelings and was too chicken and she did the same for me. We didn't make this a common practice but we did this from time to time.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 5 years ago from Minnesota Author

Tammy, that is funny. Laura and I never took tests for eachother that I recall. I think I was nervous enough just sitting in her class. They never figured it out either. When I sat in on one of Laura's classes, I guess the next day a student joked about it to the teacher. The teacher said, "oh, Laura wouldn't do that."

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 5 years ago from Minnesota Author

Bumpsysmum-You got me roaring on that one. I think that is so cute! Who says you can't have crushes on more than one guy at once.

Minnetonka Twin - EXACTLY!! Probably not very 'PC' but hey, at my age who gives a darn?? :-)

Totally confused as we looked especially identical when we were younger. I feel so bad for the poor guy but now he can kid about it at class reunions.

SamboRambo profile image

I grew up with identical twins - my best friends. They traded classes at least once in school. Some teachers knew, others didn't.

I knew them so well, I could look at their silhoutte or talk to them on the phone and could tell them apart.

Each twin always assured that his brother didn't have trashy teeth or unkempt hair, etc., in case someone else mistook one for the other.

Minnetonka Twin profile image

Minnetonka Twin 5 years ago from Minnesota Author

Hi SamboRambo-You know all about the twin thing if your best buddies in school were twins. I totally get how they wanted to make sure the other twin looked ok-I guess Laura and I did that too. Switching was the best! It sure got your adrenaline going.

Great hub. Glad you clued Tom in before things got really hot and heavy (yeah, I know, Laura wouldn't have let things go any further. Just kidding with you.)

I didn't feel too bad for Tom because you, too, got a jolt when you first saw him with his arms around what you thought was "another girl."

Thanks for sharing this fun story.

Hope you and your family are having a Merry Christmas and that 2012 is your best year ever.

Voted up, funny, awesome and interesting.

Thanks for coming by Happyboomernurse. Oh the fun sis and I have had with the twin thing. Can you believe how young we started using the twin connection to have some fun? I will never forget how embarrassed Tom was when he knew he was in the middle of a twin prank. Myself, I was more mad but it's now a great memory.
