The Last of the Warriors........

A giant steed emerges from hidden edges
of the broken forests
On the green banks of the Rhine perhaps
or the Volga......
And maybe ...... the slow Potomac
He is a giant ...white and scarred.....
I have never seen a battle horse
so full of scars .....and still
He breathes forth a plume of the mornings
mists.......Glistening on his chest of armor
is the dew that will tease
his last thirst......Old blackened and
dried blood coats the withers and the
tree sized trunks of his legs....
But he knows well enough still
to step lightly ......for the soldier
on his back as well has
seen his final battle..........
A broken spear plunged deep into
the horses chest ...protrudes ....tearing slowly at
the boulder sized heart within.......
And the warrior on his back .......A face of
granite revealing not the pain from his
wounds....... His sword arm hangs useless now
from his bleeding side .....It takes all of his
concentration just to guide the
battle horse towards the mouth
of the river...... and at the edge of the banks
all movement ceases
As the giant steed lowers
his head to the water
he realizes this one last drink of fresh spring
water is all that he has
needed.....for days
He stumbles one last
stumble and in a rush of air
from his lungs
And the sound of a thousand
battle cries emerges
in one last breath......
Both hearts beat out
their final beat ........timed
to perfection .....each heart
in unison
ends it's full duties at the
exact moment.......
And the last of the warriors falls victim
To some new promise of a beginning.........
and all in solitude......
Another era of peace takes hold

OMG horse, you have made an old girl cry this morning. I can feel the pain and yet, determination of these two souls, so long together and never wanting to be apart. This has to be one of your best for me dear friend. x
