The Poetry Contest

Excitement filled the author deep inside

When the poetry contest post arrived

The topic looked to be great fun

And so the writer started writing one.

The first few lines went rather fast

As fingers worked to face the task

Then things started to go slow

And poetry seemed to lose its flow

So the author took time to refine

And read each stanza line by line

Changing tenses and adding words

Deleting nouns, replacing verbs

The tenure must remain the same

And the composition must be named

When at last the final line was penned

The contest entry was turned in

The waiting seemed to take its toll

As other poems began to unfold

The standings were checked every hour

But the writer’s hopes began to sour

The other entries were quite good

But in reflect they probably should

The writer sat with baited breath

In hope his would be found the best

Then at last the answer came

At last the winner would be named

The author tried to go online

To see what results were there to find

The computer fan began to wail

And the keyboard was to no avail

Then all the lights blinked on and off

The hard drive crashed and all was lost

Perhaps next week when pay comes in

He’ll buy new parts and install them

Then go to check on line again

And see who won at contest’s end
