The Old Rowan Tree.

Sitting huddled

into the old bay window

of yesteryear;

childhood memories

flooding back.

Mamgu's farm

my haven

my beacon

my soul.

The Old Rowan Tree

waving hello

in the cool

early morning breeze.

Fingers of sunrise

caressing each leaf

dancing with the branches

of life.

Some stout and some slim

but each one

with that

deeply hidden strength

of hidden promise

of sweet vitality.

Beyond

The Old Rowan Tree

a scene of

magical

childhood bliss;

a picture of innocence

running barefooted

curly brown hair

flowing

adding to the freedom

of wondrously

happy childhood memories.

Source

That voice

so full

of innocence;

full of

true beauty,

laughter,

so full of

childhood bliss,

lifting,

playing,

dancing freely

with those

deliciously long fingers

of swelling sunrise.

All these memories

fulfilling

cascading

with heartfelt love

for The Old Rowan Tree.

Daisy chains

created with soft tender fingers;

worn with

such sweet

childhood honour.

Daisy the Jersey cow

gave her sweet nectar

of warm

flowing

creamy milk;

a taste,

a precious moment

which

has been treasured

and

cherished.

To enhance

these wonderful trips

down

Memory Lane.

Days of hope,

days of care ,

days of unconditional love;

so caressed,

so protected,

so free ,

so fulfilled,

just like my memories of

The Old Rowan Tree.

Rowans, such special trees! My favorite verse is the first one, and I like the opening line---"Sitting huddled"---as it invites you into a sensory memory immediately. I also particularly like the lines "fingers of sunrise" and "some stout and some slim": the words have a craggy but whispering quality just like tree branches.

Dear Eddy, this brings back memories of my childhood in my grandma's backyard. They were big sugar maples, but the feeling was the same. You know my grandparents were dairy farmers, and always had Jersey cows. My grandpa always said the milk was sweeter than the Holsteins most other farmers had. That backyard held all kinds of carefree nature experiences for me. Thanks for reminding me of a much kinder and gentler time in my life! Voted Way Up and shared. Beautiful work as always, my friend. Thank you for sharing your sweet tribute to the tree. It seems that a tree represents that certain resilience and strength that we each seek in our existences, as a source of sanctuary in the ups and downs of each of our lives, and is always there , even if only in our memories. whonu

My dear Eddy - all through reading this gorgeous poem, I had waves of 'goose-bumps'! It paints a vivid picture of the moments of childhood - the trust as well as the wispy doubts - but all in all, the beauty of memories and innocence.

I knew only one of my grandparents (the other three were dead before I was born) and that grandmother lived with us at the time, so her own setting was never part of my memory.

But the memories of my childhood with my parents who were much older than most, have such clarity and your memories bring them back. I've a willow tree in my treasure trove. :-)

Your talent for 'painting a picture' is great! Here's to more!

A very happy new year to you Eddie and your loved ones!

I always find it so wonderful how nature can create and hold so many beautiful memories from childhood. I always used to find trees so magical - and still do! This magical world is what makes childhood such a special time - nothing is impossible and everything probable! I think children can teach us cynical adults so much!

The whole poem is stunning and in particular I loved:

"Fingers of sunrise, caressing each leaf, dancing with the branches

of life."

Another beautiful piece of work from a wonderful poet!! Voted + shared!

What lovely images this conjured up. Beautiful as always Eddy.

I had an old Oak that I used to hide in when I was feeling miffed, it was so old and big I could be completely concealed. I was gutted when it was struck by lightening and split clean in two! Had to find another hidey hole!

What beautiful childhood memories, Eddy - i am envious - but never jealous! What impresses me most is how deeply you are aware and appreciative of such!

And - all those memories evoked from a single tree - which i completely understand! when i move - it's my trees and flowers will miss..it's so strange..

During hurricane sandy - people lost...sooo much, and - i remember watching a home video taken from inside the home - recording the devastation as it approached, and - the big tree in their front yard just fell over. I heard his wife crying about it in the background - and - i understood. That tree was just GONE, never to be enjoyed again! And Then - worse happened. but i'll never forget her reaction over the tree...so sad..

Lurana Brown 3 years ago

ImKarn23---I grew up in New Jersey and know many people affected by Hurricane Sandy. My brother still lives in my childhood home and lost a very old, very big tree to Sandy that held so many memories---I used to hide behind it when the mailman came and he'd pretend to be surprised every time. :-) Trees that we form bonds with can live longer than beloved pets---we do miss and grieve them!

Hi Eddy. The rowan is one of a trinity of trees traditionally with faeries. The others are hawthorn and elder. We have a couple of very old hawthorn trees here, grown as standards instead of a hedge. My husband has suggested planting a rowan or two as he also remembers them from his childhood.

Lovely hub. Voted up. :)

Eddy, I am not familiar with the Rowan tree but I like the idea of it. I grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota which was somewhat noted for the elm trees that lined many of the streets. Mostly they were devastated by Dutch Elm disease. The tree, I am sure, are missed. If I had you poetic ability, I would write about them. up votes and sharing.
