The Screwtape Letters Summary
Ever wonder what demons have to say about you and I? If you have, C.S. Lewis's "The Screwtape Letters" is for you. Published in 1942, "The Screwtape Letters" is a fictional collection of letters from a demon by the name of "Screwtape" to his nephew "Wormwood". Wormwood's job is to tempt a man who's actual name is never given. Screwtape is a higher ranked demon who gives Wormwood advice on how to tempt the man.
Through "Uncle Wormwood's" letters, we learn many things about human nature, sin, and God (whom Uncle Wormwood refers to as "the enemy"). Lewis's demonic character addresses such diverse topics as: the affects of mass media on the Christian walk, humanitiy's judgmental nature, and family relationships. All of these are covered within the first three letters and there are a total of thirty one letters. This gives you an idea of the breadth of subjects included. While a myriad of different topics are covered, Lewis does not skimp on details. Instead he cuts deep to the heart of each issue and provides clever and insightful commentary which can help any Christian to learn to overcome temptation.
If you are a Christian looking for some good fiction, or if you just enjoy the writing of C.S. Lewis, than check out "The Screwtape Letters". You won't be disappointed.
A reader submitted a question about "Screwtape Proposes a Toast" Here is the question and answer.
What is "Screwtape Proposes a Toast" Is this the same as "The Screwtape Letters"?
"Screwtape Proposes a Toast" is actually a sequel to "The Screwtape Letters". Generally, the two are published together. "Screwtape Proposes a Toast" was not written until 1959. It is written as an after dinner toast, rather than a letter. In it, Screwtape addresses a dinner party of demons. Lewis uses this platform as a criticism of 1950's education practices.
