In the night, you come
Silently drifting petals of ice over my world,
Rimming my window pane with white,
Unknown to me,
As I sleep beneath eaves and eiderdown,
Above polished oak and braided rug,
With one flannel clad arm flung carelessly
And the tabby kitten by my side.
I know nothing of your frosty venture
From heaven, to earth.
You continue into gray light
Where I acknowledge and rejoice in your presence.
The tabby kitten sits by the hearth in warm content,
But I restlessly venture into your domain
And feel a seldom known peace creep over me
As I walk within you.
I feel icy crystals settle gently on my hair,
Stick in my eyelashes
And melt against my upturned cheeks.
I feel not your cold, for you bring to me
The feverish warmth and delight
Of the Snowgod.
I walk endlessly through empty streets
To the edge of town -
There I walk through woods
Where I am in my own world.
For you have filled the trail of my progress.
But as the sky begins to darken
I turn my steps to a warm fireside
Where a tabby kitten and hot chocolate
Patiently await my return, knowing, as I do
That you, the icy windrider of the night
Will return as you will leave, in the benevolent arms
Of the Snowgod.
