The Softness of a Woman

If You Want ...

If you want the softness of a woman
You must often hear her cry.
If you want the loving of a woman
You will sometimes want to die.
If you wish to hold her in your arms
You may have to hear her shout
If you want her close beside you
You will have to work it out.

Work it out. Work it out. Shout it out. Talk it out.

Doesn't matter how you do it
But just don't shut her out.
She will sometimes drive you crazy
And you'll wonder why you're there.

But if you want the softness of a woman
You must also hear her cry.

Listen To This Woman

If you want the mother of your children
To also be your wife
If the lass who serves you supper
Is the most important in your life ...
If the woman who lies beside you
Is to be your lady-love

Then listen to this woman
Don't let her slip away.
Caress her with your friendship
Seduce her with your play.

If you want the softness of a woman
You will have to hear her cry.
If you want the loving of a woman
You will sometimes want to die.

The Poem

This poem is written as a song, almost a lullaby, and it is full of repetition and simple words. The simple words are designed to reach the emotions instead of the mind and to communicate a powerful message.

The Message

Loving a woman is not easy. It takes patience and understanding. For many men, it will move them far beyond their comfort zone as they are forced to deal with her emotions, her moods and sometimes her hormones. But if a man wants a woman in his life, in any meaningful way, he will endure this difficulty in order to hold unto someone that he loves.

Some men are not willing to do this but they are not willing to live without women, altogether. Some men even take to abusing women who inconvenience them or do things to annoy them, all the time still wanting her close enough to feel her softness. But if a man truly desire the "softness of a woman," he must hear her tears and dry her face. He cannot have her there, as a doll, for his use, but not being willing to love her.

Love is more than getting what you need, but it's giving what is needed. This is often inconvenient and rarely without a price but love will be willing to pay the cost.

Background

I wrote this poem about twelve years ago, to someone I knew who was abusing his wife. I tried to share it with him but he did not get the message. I saw so clearly how he was not willing to love this woman who had given him children and devoted her life to serving him.

All she wanted was his love but he was unwilling to give her even that. He kept yelling at her and shaming her, and not listening to her. No matter how much I pleaded with him to stop, he would not. She tried to leave him many times but could not stay away. Eventually, she died of cancer, which I believe was from the stress of what she was going through. This poem comes from a sad place but it is also a happy poem because when a man loves a woman, it is truly a beautiful thing.

What a beautiful read! Thanks for the background as well because it really opens up the meaning behind the words! Such a sad tragedy for your friend who did not wise up in time yet how blessed he was to have been loved so well when he was so undeserving....

Dallas, wow! You were fast in reading this poem! It was a very sad situation but what a wonderful thought. I had not thought of that but he was truly blessed to have the love of this woman, even if he did not know it. Thank you for helping me to see the situation in a different light. You never know when you might learn something new. Take care and blessings to you! Thanks again.

What a powerful poem and so very true. To me it was saying that a man must be emotionally intimate with his woman if the relationship is to be healthy and truly loving.

It was very sad reading what originally inspired you to write the poem because it didn't help the friend you were trying to help and her husband totally didn't get what you were trying to say. But hopefully others who read it now will take its message to heart and salvage their own relationships.

Voted up, useful, awesome and interesting.

"Tears are a language God understands." We as men are created in the image of God and we are to listen to the tears as they speak what is needed to be heard.

Thank you sharing this with us... passionate is the appeal for all men to listen.

Thanks for sharing PP. I have an amazing wife and I have to remember that, women sometimes aren't super easy to live with, what with all the tears n all. But they're worth it. So worth it

@PDX, so good to hear you say that! I know women can be a bit testy sometimes but love conquers all. Happy Thanksgiving and blessings to you and your wife! Take care.

What a touching poem that says so much.

But I think the poem cracks open the surface where the story that follows finishes the work started. If it doesn't reach someone, very little will.

Homesteadbound, thank you so much! Yes, I am glad you think the explanation helps with the poem. I am not accustomed to putting explanations with poems but in this case, the contest required it, and I am glad that I did!

Thanks again for a great comment. Take care!

It is so good to read about the tenderness and softness you see in women. I think of women as strong and in that strength a softness can co-exist--nicely done!

Audrey, great insight! Yes, the strength and softness of women are a powerful combination. Thanks for adding that thought. Have a wonderful day!

Hello PP,

Reading this reminded me of some real smucks I have come across in my life.

Some men are just Aholes and don't deserve the women they are with, and vis a versa.

Unfortunately some women and men have such low opinions of themselves that they do not think they are worth more. Everyone loses out in these relationships. Time passes and can never be regained.

prairieprincess profile image

prairieprincess 5 years ago from Canada Author

Molometer, some men definitely are like that, and they wreak havoc on those around them. Thank you for your very insightful and compassionate comment. Take good care.

You owned this messege! No man , No man .!.....ever has the right to a womans gifts unless he earns them ! I have often seen domination by ridicule , by criticisms . I have many times observed a beautiful woman with such low self esteem . Its actually painful to watch . Write on girl write on........:-}

Lovely poem about a woman. A woman is God's beautiful creation, mysterious, has much emotions. A woman deserves to be loved by a man tenderly, gently and when a man loves a woman....he will do anything to make her happy. Thanks for sharing.

prairieprincess profile image

prairieprincess 2 years ago from Canada Author

@ahorseback, somehow, I missed your comment, but thank you! Yes, earn is the right term when it comes to having access to a woman's gift. Well said. And many very beautiful women do not understand their own value, and some men are very eager to take advantage of this. Thanks again, and have a wonderful evening!

@carolp, you are so right! Every woman deserves this much, and so sad that some men cannot move themselves to give this. Take care, Carol.
