Scars Beneath the Sleeves.....

You felt it all too often the weight of iron on
human tissue
Fear ....dread .....pain and promise
The burning sensation of self hate
When I look at the sky ....what do I see
Beauty ...blue ...brightness
But you .........you saw a row of clouds that
formed a wall
And an eternity of torturous time
No ....don't speak to me of dreams
nor promises
I've heard them all before
And what is left for you now but to
drag a finger along the scar tissue
and remember
remember
The morning that he passed I saw a reflection
from the side of your mirror
The image of those scars
reversed
They spelled freedom
Its too bad though
They never taught you
to spell
It's a good thing for long sleeves

This piece can be interpreted in so many ways but the one that stands out more to me is a battered wife who lost her husband but is still trapped with the misery of it.

I feel very sorry for the subject of this poem....trapped in a web of negativity and captured by a 'glass half empty' outlook. Beautifully written and described. I am very happy that you see the beauty...blue...and brightness of the beautiful sky. I hope, one day, your subject does, too. UP Beautiful Awesome...HP needs to add some other adjectives to complete our spectrum of choices...I'd add melancholy to this one. Thank you for sharing.

Cardisa , You have a sixth sense of some things dont you! It is very much about abuse . I hate abusers with a passion, I have seen and been in the middle of such ugliness. Once when I was fourteen or fifteen I stepped between an abuser and his wife , my parents. It wasn't pretty! Thank you cardisa , your always there....:-}

This poem was so powerful, sad and unfortunately an oh so true description of an abused woman who is still wrapped in the scars from the past even after her abuser dies. Thanks so much for sharing it.

Every day we seem to hear more and more opening up about abuse, far too many. And far too many listen to those empty promises and keep hoping in vain. So we wear those long sleeves and bow our heads and pretend to the outside world that those grey skies are bright blue. It takes courage to finally knock down those walls and step out into the bright blue sun. But those last couple of clouds just won’t clear, they hold all of the memories.

This is beautifully written from the heart my friend.

Thank you

Probably the most cowardly of acts. And besides the physical pain which may pass the psychic wound may never heal for the victim or child that sees it. I know of something similar, like you do of this. The tragedy of it couldn't be better recorded than your superb prose poem here ahorseback.

HappyboomerNurse, No one deserves anything, anywhere near abuse. emotional or physical. The abusers be damned! Nor do I believe its a chain to be broken by forgiveness of the abuser , thats too easy. Thank you for sharing....:-}

I agree with you Rosemay , I truely hope you were never a victim of this . You are right about victims always wearing those looks , those scars, And I believe the perpetrator is always wearing the badge of the abuser. If an abused woman or child were to go on with a life of positive strengths and outlooks ....she wins!....Thank you for sharing this......:-}

Always Exploring , I mean't that ,although the abuse is clearly shown ....that the victims can't see the patterns, The reflection is there for a victim but they wear the blinders of too much hope for change. Over and over again we see this ! Breaking the cycles is the answer! I certainly hope you aren't a victim of an abuser , there are too too many!.....:-}

Alastar , why do we all know someone , victim or perp. You are correct ...the most cowardly of acts. We all have to shine the light on such a dark situation ! Thank you for reading and understanding......:-}
