"The Time We Lost"

This poem inspired by the song "Time" by Pink Floyd. And these lyrics

"You are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death."

You can't catch up with time...if you let it pass you by.

The Time We Lost

I'm running...and running...
trying to catch up with time...
But you can't catch up with time
if you let it pass you by.

Tomorrow is already gone
and I have nothing left to show for it.
Just a memory that I haven't lost yet.

And all that time we lost
it haunts me like a dream,
when dreams can never be reality...
its a nightmare it seems.

And time is slipping farther away,
and I'm getting older now.
Wasting away in the sun...

10 years have gone by
and what have I done?
My life has flashed before my eyes,
and now I'm starting to run...

I'm running...and running...
trying to catch up with time...
the distance is too far to travel.

I've reached my breaking point,
one more step and I'll be at judgements door,
awaiting the sound of the gavel.

So much of life I haven't lived...
So much love I've yet to give...
Such a big price to pay...
for wasting time away...

We miss out on so much,
every day closer to death.
We miss out on so much,
when we hesitate to take a breath.

Every moment interlaced,
bound by time and space...
Life and death and the inbetween...
Timing is everything.

My Nikki, your poem has captured me. I am a pink floyd groupie. their words are real about time in fact that is one of my favorite songs for I wasted at least ten years of my life. But "wasting away the moments that make up a dull day" means more than than you think. Sometimes the day isn't wasted it's just the way you look at it when you suddenly see and think that you missed something while time went by. Every day was a wonderful experience you just never thought about it till you saw time one day staring back at you when you saw your reflection of your life. You are Beautiful!!!! the lord says so .

Love you Girl.

Michael.

Yes indeed! I have written about this several times but not as beautifully as you! I don't regret the past nor do I concern myself with time lost...I can only affect the here and now and I make the most of every minute in my life now....great hub!

Beautiful... verse.. enraptured me totally... beautiful

We waste time and forget things we ought to do.. not material.. more abstract things... feeling we needed to confess, love we had to offer, wrongs needed to be corrected!

Beautiful poem!

Nikki, this is so true, so true! It reminds of the line from Fight Club:

“This is your life and its ending one moment at a time.” - Chuck Palahniuk

Grab onto each moment, Nikki and live it. Then commit it to memory and live on. I loved this Nikki. You have a lot of wisdom for one so young!

Wow. I absolutely love everyones comment here. I'm glad this poem reached out to you all. Pink Floyd is a great band. I was raised on that old classic rock, so I am a big fan as well. yes I know its more that just wasting a dull day. Its looking at all the things you wished you would have done, all the risks you wished you would have took, like kissing that guy, or going out with your friends more, or taking that job, moving to another state, just so many opportunities that we miss. If i get the chance to do something that I love or really want to do, from now on...I want to do it. I want to get out there and live life now, because time doesnt stop...Days go by and those days turn to years, and I want to say I have done something with my life. I look back on so many missed opportuntities, and wasted time, wasting time on some guy that I shouldnt have been with.. and not being with one I should have been with. and yes every day is a blessing, and should be cherished and all the things we did do are our choices and our lessons learned and are what give us experience...but some things u just wish you could go back on and do differently... so We can start now by making better decisions and doing what makes us happy, be with the ones we love, and do more, give more, and have fun. We work our lives away trying to make it in this world, and theres so much world we've yet to see...

Loved this it's so catchy :) and the message is so powerful. Great song of Pink Floyd too. Sometimes we feel we missed so much and we want to go back and do what we should.. If only we could turn back time.. But we still have much time left Nikki. Cheers! That's much to be happy about :)

Did you watch that movie In Time? (Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried) It's interesting and unique lol

Thanks Fehl. Yes but you never know when your time may be up.. so live each day with your heart on your sleeve, and a smile on your face, and cherish each moment that you are blessed to have. even the moments of alone time and make use of it, relaxing, reading a good book, listening to your fave music, because these things we will miss too. Call up someone you miss... And yes I saw that movie. It was really good. Justin T looking good as usual.

Nikki I love your writing because you can be so powerful and you really know how to ut those feelings into words. But there is so much more to life and more to do. You are as young as I am and not even maybe a half way or a third though life yet. I love the Pink Floyd music. (Their "The Wall" album is awesome.)

You have all this life and I know you will do more things and be more than you are. I think in the end you will see it too...you will find your path...

Have a sweet day, Nikki. Think it and be it....

That is the whole point of this poem Cathy. You hit the moral on the head... To get out there and live life and do all the things you know you will regret not doing later on. I am definitely doing a lot more these days. Thanks Cathy.

This is a lovely piece. Us humans tend to feel incomplete without a sense of accomplishments, or goals to guide us. A plan without action is just a dream. This poem is great for the youth. Reminding us that we should make every minute count, and that life--life is much like a coin. We may spend it however we like; but we must keep in mind that we may only spend it once.

"So much of life I haven't lived...

So much love I've yet to give...

Such a big price to pay...

for wasting time away...

We miss out on so much,

every day closer to death.

We miss out on so much,

when we hesitate to take a breath."

Lovely poem

we should do this again sometime.

;)
