The Very Last Time

The very last time

Would haunt him for a lifetime

Just the thought

That while she was kissing him

It was the last time

The last time he would hold her

The last time to gaze upon her

It was the silence

Of a Sunday morning

That brought him to reality

After a night of what he now thought of

The last times to last forever

Her words of love

Sounded the same

Her hands held him

Just as they always had

As he was kissing her

He had no idea

That this would be the last time

The last kiss

The last look

The last time his heart would beat

Then came the morning stillness

No coffee smells

No I love yous

Nothing only silence

And yet, he looked for the note

That would say she’d gone shopping

Gone to get breakfast

Gone and will be back soon

But there was nothing

And it seemed so very odd

Daytime passed to the long shadows

Of a late, golden afternoon

And he still sat there

Pondering and remembering the last time

The night before

If only he could have known

That it would be the last time

He would have imprinted it in his mind

The last kiss, the last look

That last touch that would have to last for a lifetime

There had not even been the slam of a door

There had been nothing to warn him

And now he was haunted

Haunted by a string of lasts

That kept going through his mind

Last kiss, last gaze, last time

That echoed with each tick of the clock

While visions kept flashing before him

Like a film in fast motion

Suddenly slowing down to a stop

And he found it difficult to believe

That never again he would gaze

Upon her loving face

"Haunted by a string of lasts" is such a great line from a great poem by a great poet. I can remember having such a huge crush on David Cassidy. Smiles. V+

The lasting poignancy is very much heartfelt that flows with the words. Nice expression, liked it really. Wish we'd all knew before our last meetings!

That emptiness and wishing to turn the clock back. It's expressed so well in your poem.

I like how this one ended sadly. You don't disappoint. The story wound and weaved and you kept us wondering about the mysteries of the tale.

Hello Gypsy. I thought I'd stop over and enjoy your poetry. This has a chilling tone of that greyness we humans slip into when love is lost. This is a haunting tale, rich in the telling.
