The scent of snow............

I stepped stocking footed out onto the deck
to close the gate for the dogs
Before setting them free
Cold .....snow....winters day
Yet what is that?........ triggering such memory
The scent of snow
And my emotions....... A mist lays over everything
the melting snow
the scent
the memory....
And as the mist silently clears away
I remember you
Laughing .....a wood fire ......
coffee aroma
And another morning far far
away
My age creeps up on my heart
and then sneaks away with all else
all love
all memory
like melting snow
Like mist over the linen
fields of white
Leaving only one thing
The scent of snow........

You have a talent to be able to evoke great memories of when I was a child going out into a snow covered yard, such fun. Thanks.

ahorseback, this is a brilliant evocative and melancholy poem. How many of us recall lost loves and even kept loves when a special scent catches us unaware?

The weather is little warm, winter seems to be passing away. And we all you preserve our winter memories.

Lovely poem.

It's all lovely, but this simile captured me:

". . . the linen fields of white . . . " Of course, that evokes the scent, too.

That was beautiful. Brought back some snowy memories. Love your line Like mist over the linen fields of white - inspired. I have a very strong scent for rain.

Wonderful, lovely poem...although there is no specific connection, your poem reminded me of the tile of a movie I saw many years ago. "Snow Falling on Cedars" I am longing for snow now... and we have sadly warm and humid February here in Georgia. Its not the way it is supposed to be...leaves me melancholy.

Phdast, I love that movie too. Yes the odd seasons can leave me a bit melancholy too. Bare ground in winter for one . Are you a "summer time girl"?...:-}

Actually, I absolutely love, no revel in autumn, the colors, the smells, the crisp air. Next I like winter, even though it may be somber and cold (definitely don't want it to be warm and humid), then Spring is pretty nice and I don't really care for summer much at all. :(

Although, when I was quite young my father was stationed in Athens, Greece (Air Force. It was hot in the summer, but dry and there were prevailing winds coming in off the Agean Sea. The Agean was a twenty-five minute walk from our house. And the water was blue, aquamarine, even lavender and so incredibly clear. It was wonderful weather and a terrific place to live. :)

phdast , I have to agree with your choice of seasons , you are fortunate , in some ways I'm sure ,to have experienced some other parts of the world . I have grown to love what autumn does to me . Introspection , internalizing , reflections of life. Such are the choices of some of us who who are perhaps more content with life in our maturing.......Thank you for sharing this...:-}

You are right, aside from the bracing weather and incredible colors of fall, the season does encourage introspection, reflecting, or as my parents would have said "pondering." There is a great deal to be said for contentment, and few of us seem to value it much when we are young. It is an ability that seems to come slowly with age. It is a good gift. :) Stay well.

Ahh but that bracing weather is the best, I'm always amazed at how few people are "in the moment" though . The gift is at times hard earned!Im glad you share it.....:-}
