Sometimes it is Time to Take a Rest from Article Writing

Taking a Vacation from Article Writing

Time to take a rest from writing articles. Each one of us from time to time needs to take a rest from things, even from those we love doing. Taking a rest is needed not only to recharge our energies, but also to appreciate more what we like to do. And it's also useful to avoid being burned out from something we love to do.

Coincidences: there is a saying that coincidences are what happens when God, or a Higher Power, wants to do things undercover. I don't know if this is the truth, but it makes a lot of sense. Thoughts to ponder, and things to consider.

Some time ago, after having written more than twenty articles finally I've been able to write three good articles which gave a boost to my traffic, and made me to make some "good" money with AdSense. I was finally able to say to myself: "Wonderful, I have begun to climb the mountain."

Then, on a specific day, everything stopped suddenly: no more traffic and no more money. I went in a day from 500+ visits to around 100 and the money from 1,5 - 2 € per day to 0. After some weeks with a constant increase in both earning and traffic. It made me thinking: " Is it worth the effort?"

Writing an article takes me around four hours, a couple of hours to find the pictures and another two hours to get links from social bookmarking sites. Total eight hours minimum. To earn nothing or to earn let's say 2 dollars a day. And of course this earning can stop at any moment, because for some reasons the traffic goes to zero, or Google decides to reduce the money given to publishers, or ads are so bad that no one wants to click on them...

Because I'm one of those "lucky" writers who earns nothing from Amazon, and are not allowed to have an Ebay account. So the only theoric source of income is Google AdSense.

So again the question is:" Is it worth the effort?"

Now Spring has finally arrived, flowers and bees are everywhere, and honestly I need much more to feel the sun on my skin and the wind through my hair than passing eight hours of my time to write an article that can make me to earn some, or zero money. Yes, article writing is something I really love to do but there are also bills to pay. Time is money, and I don't like to throw away money. Once used time can never be used again, what's gone has gone.

If 30 articles don't make me to earn at least 50 cents a day it means that either I don't write good articles, or that in reality the money to be earned with ads is very little. Better use my time to tweak the hubs I've already written and see if something happens. At the end, for my own pockets, it's useless going on writing articles if they are not good enough.

So, my beloved followers and readers, this hub is just to tell you that I'll be much less active on HubPages as I'm focusing on my own website, The Hypnotism Weekly. I'll always answer to comments on my hubs, and I'll try to comment on yours as much as I can. Maybe I'll even write a hub or two. Who knows?

And if I can tell you one thing after having decided not to care anymore about my author score, my hubs score and traffic, well, I feel so relieved and relaxed that you can't imagine. No more Damocles' Sword for me. Will I write again on HubPages? Sure, when I'll feel like, it's no more a commitment for me.

Article writing is a pleasure and a passion so when it ends being it it's time to stop and recharge.

Final Thoughts on Article Writing at HubPages

Does this mean that I'm leaving HubPages? No, of course, some cents a month are better than nothing and earnings have begun to increase again. Also I have too many friends here to just say "Bye Bye". This is the place where I've learned a lot about article writing but I simply don't have enough time to make article writing profitable as it should.

Tweaking my already written articles and letting them time to grow will show me if the theory that writing good content and waiting enough money arrives. We'll see.

Two articles a week for the dream or wish to earn some money in a distant future are a luxury that now I cannot afford. Also, after having been here for four months it's time to see what I can achieve sailing on other seas.

If you like, and I would appreciate it, leave a comment, rate it and share it, thanks.

Also don't forget to check my own website and if you like say hi to me, you'll get a link back to your own article here. :)

I love the warm photos and I'm glad to know you are not leaving Hubpages because I enjoy reading your Hubs.

Hypnodude, what I have learnt is, the more articles you have, the more you earn. It's good you are taking time to rest but still Hub now and then. Eventually, you will get to a point where you write less and you have more consistent Adsense. See it as a passive income.

You hardly earn anything at Redgage. People make money by getting bonuses once in a blue moon for what they have written and winning competitions. You'll notice I have $33 in my account but what you don't know is, I can't even get it out as I didn't receive the so-called "Redgage Card" and every staff I have contacted has just ignored me.

As for Redgage needing less time - HP do not penalise you for writing 1 Hub in a week or even 1 Hub in a month.

Your question: Is it worth the effort?

My Answer: Yes.

There are many people on HP earning a very reasonable amount on the site, but they have been here for at least a year. Later on today or in the week, I will email you their names. You could even drop them a line...

So, non rinunciare.

Best Wishes. :)

I won't give up Lady_E. Only that before going on using my little spare time I want to see if the real issue is time been here. If I have little time to write imagine if I have some to read. I'll have almost six months to see if something happen, but at the same time I want to explore other sites and see if things are different there, not only RedGage, but Flixya, Triond....

And on the other side I see little use in writing articles if I'm not able to receive something from the one I've already written.

My main goal with this hub is just to be able to reach all my followers at once to tell why I'm gonna be less active here and why.

I've appreciated a lot your kind words. :)

It seems hypnodude - that many of us are expressing the same thoughts. We enjoy writing - but we enjoy money too. And living here in NYC I need money every 15 minutes!

So I must have other sources of income, leaving me little time for hub pages. It took me nearly a year to get a first payout - and well, in two years I have only written 130 hubs - but after nearly a year I now get a payout every 3 months - and that residual income feels mighty good. Perhaps if I could write many more hubs I can get a monthly payout - but the time, it is always the time - and as you say - time is money.

If you do 1-2 hubs per week you are doing better than me - and I noticed one of your hubs (the sumo squat) is regularly on the front hub page. It is a lot of work to get the payouts - but once it happens - it is exactly the type of income I like best - the residual income. Your work, working for you.

I regularly write online for DemandStudios.com which is the main source of my writing income. They pay twice a week and it certainly helps pay the bills. I'll check out RedGage - thanks!

Enjoy the summer!

Dear hypno. I understand your feelings completely. I am in the same position where I often wonder just how long I can keep up the pace for pennies a day (although my first check from goggle has yet to arrive). I've learned it's about the joy of writing and participating in this environment. But life moves on. Enjoy the spring air, follow your gut, your passion, your road to success. I will miss your Hubs, but hope you will stay in touch as you have become a friend. Good thoughts and wishes go out to you on this sunny day. -Fondly, GL

Thanks BKCreative, actually the Sumo Squat was my best performing hub, before the sudden drop in traffic. Well, thanks for the great advice on DemandStudios.com, I'll check them out.:)

Btw, it's not only a matter of money, actually a comment I received this morning in my cancer hub gave me all the reward I needed, but more a matter of time.

Thanks for your kind words and your good advices.:)

Green Lotus, actually friends like you are the biggest reason why I'll go on writing hubs, sooner or later. I'd be crazy to lose such great friends always ready to say a kind word.

Probably I don't understand completely the wonder of writing, but I simply can't, as you said, exchange pennies a day for the sun. Probably it's the Reiki Practitioner inside of me.:)

The sudden loss in traffic and earnings has been a good hit, but it sent me again on the right road.

Thanks a lot for your kind words, I've appreciated them immensely. :)

You better not ever leave or I will come after you. I too was denied an Ebay account, as far as I see they missed two quality writers such as ourselves lol. Honestly it took awhile for me to make dollars but in last 6 mths it is all a happening fast.

hypnodude profile image

hypnodude 6 years ago from Italy Author

blondepoet, how could I leave? I'm interested in remaining alive. Lol.

At Ebay they understand nothing. To be honest it has been a mixture between the loss of traffic and money and time involved. Especially because I don't believe much in coincidences. Anyhow it might be that I find the time to write a hub per month. I just needed to advise my friends and followers of what is going on. And to rethink about priorities.:)

Thanks for your beautiful comment.:)

Oh, dear, I have been here two years and have written only 41 hubs because I see Hubpages more as a place to connect, express myself and sharpen my writing skills without pressure; I write when I feel up to it and for the simple pleasure of it. I am putting pressure on myself however on finishing my book on inspirational musings, this goal is important to me.

Glad you are not leaving, the hubs you write help others!

Hiya, I think that we all feel like this sometimes. I promised myself today that I would not go on the computer! here I am. I know how you feel about the earnings. I have started to post the hubs that i have written on other sites, and it seems to be working slowly. I post on Redgage and it does take a while to get the card. I had to write to them about five times to get it, but it went wrong because they forgot to put England at the bottom of my address! lol it went around America about ten times I think! I have had some luck in the fact that I have put on Derren browns site by someone else, and now they occasionally put some more of mine on there, because I sent it too them. try the big sites that are well known, you never know, it might work. I also submit to Fortean Times magazine online and they have placed a couple of my hubs there. good luck and I hope you have a great summer. Nell

Nell, my friend, thanks for your kind words, very much appreciated. RedGage has some flaws, yet I think it has some positive sides worth investigating. We'll see how it goes.

Actually money isn't in the first place, much more the traffic thing. I know it can happens but the specific circumstances seemed strange to me. To see better how things are sometimes we need to look at them from a different, distant, perspective.

But I won't go much far away.:)

Thanks a lot.

Hypnodude, I'm following blondepoet and coming after you too! Maybe to invite you for an ice cream treat? LOL Remember that time in one of my hubs I said I never knew much about SEO and am such a computer nitwit? Well, this young lady earned anyway! And found a friend in you too. :) The earnings are small compared to the other hubbers who are earning a bigger amount on Hubpages. But it's extra income for me and it is already a big blessing! I do understand about the bills and all and so have attended a seminar last Saturday. Dayzeebee and I will be finishing our e-book. Maybe you should write one and sell it. You write really well. :)

So for the ice cream.... ?

Hi hypno - I understand where you are at and I'm very glad you are not leaving altogether! It is hard to make money here especially in the early days and I've had periods of wondering whether it's worth it. Somehow I've managed to push through those periods.

From my limited experience, it's the 4-8 month period where you really find what works and start earning some reasonable income. I hope to hear that your earnings have risen back to a level that feels ok for you in a short time! Very best wishes to you hypno - you are a great guy and deserve every success! X

Thanks Ripplemaker, well, sometimes I play with the idea of writing an ebook, but now it's just a little early, but thanks for your encouragement. And for your kind words.

It's not much about the money, but more about the time needed. Or probably I should definitely care less about scores. But what really made me thinking about all this has been the sudden loss in traffic from one day to the other.

Anyway I could not disappoint you and blondepoet, so we have a deal for that ice cream. ;)

Thanks for your support.

And you are a very good friend Susana. Honestly I find very hard not to write, I have at least four hubs going around in my head. But at the same time I'm wondering if it's worth the effort. Probably I'll publish two here and two somewhere else and see where I get the best results. And in the meantime I'll see if tweaking and waiting it's what's needed.

Anyway I'll try to look at your 60 day challenge hubs.;)

HUGS, H I will miss you but you explained you will still visit form time to time. I can still email you, I understand what youre saying, I am giving it a try in my 60 days challenge. I had only earned some 356 USD at HP so far, days are sometimes good and bad at times too. (200 USD is the prize I won in the contest) I am trying my best and yes it takes time to make a hub. I like the image there the swing under the tree, spring is here and I want to cuddle all those puppies, Good luck and you are a great writer,

Hey, dude, I understand you completely. I actually feel the same way and like the napping snaps of these "take it easy" animals, I've not been as active on HP. In fact, after I won the best hub on health contest on the 4th week (thanks, pal, for voting for me), I decided to take a backseat and just go easy. I've not produced a single hub in almost 2 weeks. I'm contemplating joining RedGage--Shari has told me about it, so I may give it a try.

Anyway, will miss your constant presence here. You may want to try to join Demand Studios--they pay for every article written, subjected to approval. Enjoy your dog days of just lounging around. I've been doing that and it does good to the soul and body!

Hypnodude, I understand the weariness but hope the time comes when you want to jump back into the waters. I enjoy your work tremendously--your writing is unique, your opinions are well-thought out, and you write in an intelligent and engaging way. I have not commented on your hubs all the time, but I do read and enjoy them.

I will look for you on Redgage, although even after only a week, that site frustrates me a bit.

I understand what you are saying about priorities--I've been trying to reorganize my life as well, and we have to pay attention to what is going to help us most.

Come back as often as you can, my friend. Your friendship and contributions are considerable and appreciated.

Hi anglnwu, I checked Demand Studios, but unfortunately they work only with writers from USA, UK and Canada. But I'm going to test Triond. It seems pretty good, and every submission is checked before publishing. I'm glad you feel like me, but unhappy because it shouldn't be this way.

Thanks for your kind words and happy rest to you too.:)

Mike, your words are really uplifting. To be honest I'm receiving so many kind comments that I find hard to resist. Not much really for the results of my articles, but for the friendship of such valuable people. On one side is strange how an online community can be so warm in the real life.

RedGage at times frustrates me too, but I find it much more relaxing, for many reasons.

To use your example, let's say that before jumping again into the waters I have to check and fix my small boat.:)

Thanks for your so kind words.

Hypnodude what can I say, I know exactly how you feel. I tried doing the 30 day challenge and only got to day 24 and couldnt go on any further. I find my days reading endless hubs and commenting and then backlinking my hubs and before you know it my whole day is gone while the sun is bright outside. This is definitely harder than I signed up for but I keep hearing there is light at the end of the tunnel so I will keep trying to see if it gets better. I still have a few more months before my unemployment runs out and I have to look for work but in the meantime I write and let my husband work lol. But you were one of my first followers and I have so appreciated all your comments and feedback on my hubs and I am so glad that you will still be around and that I will also see you on Redgage as well. Hypnodude, you ROCK!! As you spend this time to tweek hubs you have already written, I'll read the many hubs of yours I have not yet read. We only recently met here on HP and I have really enjoyed your hubs. In this little time I've been here, I understand how you feel. I have not been here as long as you, but I still wonder how long it will take before I see any earnings. It is very time consuming, and like you said, before you know it, the day is gone, and the account still says '0.00'. Because I hear that it pays off, or at least makes a difference after a while (wish I knew how long 'after a while' is), I'll keep it up, pace myself and see what happens. Truthfully, I think all avenues utilized for article writing that can possible generate some sort of income should be more rewarding to its contributing writers. We work hard. Although it is enjoyable, we work hard and I believe our reward should be sooner rather than later. I could go on but I won't...

I wish you the best, glad that you are not totally leaving HP, and hope you have the greatest summer ever! Without rest/relaxation, we cannot give our best. It is essential to stop and smell the roses. May you be inspired on this journey you have chosen to explore. PEACE; RATED UP!!!!!

A writer will always write............... and I'm sure that you will continue to do just that!

See you soon.........

Well, hypnodude, I 'friended' you first on RedGage, but have seen you around HP for months, I just didn't think to follow you for some reason. I think it's called laziness. :)

Now's the time! I like your style.

Thanks lorlie, you know, usually we do things when we feel like it's the right moment to do them ;) That is to say laziness isn't always a bad thing. Thanks for following me and for the kind comment. I dig your style too, that's why now I'm following you too. :)

For me it really does come down to the fact that I very much enjoy writing. I enjoy sharing my ideas, thoughts, and I definitely like to share my OPINIONS. ;) If I make a few bucks doing that, that's absolutely a welcome bonus. I'm not sure the lack of money could ever be enough to stifle the urge though—if I added up all the money I've ever made writing I could probably fit it all into a very small jar. But I've never stopped.

But we all are here for different reasons. We all have other things that may tug on our lives, and certainly on our time. Jobs, family, errands...there's a ton of stuff to get done.

Enjoy your rest. Enjoy your spring.

Hypnodude, I have only been writing on HubPages for 3 weeks and feel so lucky to have come across your hub. I appreciate your honest perspective as it is easy to get carried away and think that HubPages will provide a livelihood. If it does, it appears to be very rare. Now that I have found you, I am going to read more of your hubs. Don't go away for too long because I am following you and look forward to hearing that it has turned around for you. From my tiny experience of HubPages, I believe it will! Love the photos here, by the way!

WildIris 6 years ago

Is it worth it? I've been asking myself the same question. I've earned $.73~not an uplifting figure. Maybe a break from the computer would be more rejuvenating than moving to a new venue. I'm thinking too much screen time is not good for the soul or the creative spirit. I like Springboard's comment. Maybe it's time to reevaluate you're purpose.

Good luck at RedGage.

I can understand your frustration - it took me a whole lot of hubs and quite a few months to see decent results. I am still working on it, and have other options (websites, blogs etc., that I write for,) so I am hopeful that sooner or later they will pay off. I am fortunate that my job takes me outdoors every time I work (am in traffic control) but I have noticed that I don't have much free time anymore...

I'm sorry to hear that you will be taking some time to "rest" my friend. I inadvertently did just that, what with my move to Upstate New York after having landed a decent (okay, more than decent) paying job. One thing that I won't ever take a break from is writing-whether for HubPages or my journal. I hope that you're not gone too long and continue to pop back in every so often! Good luck to you in any case. I look forward to reading more and you know that :)

Many of us know your feelings and have experienced the same thing. If nothing else, stepping back away from writing can be a good break to refresh! Sometimes I produce nothing just because it becomes stale and disheartening.

I would suggest that you could also spend a bit of your time away promoting what you've already done. On new social sites, by writing supporting articles that link back to your hubs, and so forth.

Also know that I've found that more volume AND age helps. I can relate this to my Squidoo lenses more easily because I've been there longer and written more there. But I'm sure the same is true on Hubpages. I made little on Squidoo when I had 10, 40 and even 60 lenses. Now I have almost 300 and it has paid off wonderfully. Keeping that content fresh and allowing it to be around awhile helps too. Search engines like that.

Taking a rest, regrouping, and so forth aren't bad at all. Branching out to try new sites is good too. We all need to do what works for us. If you love to write though, do it. When you're inspired to, do it. You may get your drive back in a short time.

Thanks Springboard. Actually I've understood that the money part is much more a myth than a reality. If better writers than me don't earn money every moth than that's the only conclusion. But as you rightly say we write for different reasons than money. Thanks for coming and for the kind comment. I'll check your opinions.:)

hypnodude profile image

hypnodude 6 years ago from Italy Author

Hi M Selvey, I love those pictures too. The Bulldog one is wonderful. I had more but I thought that five were enough. Making money with AdSense is more a legend than reality, so better writing for other reasons. :) Thanks for your comment, and I'll be back soon.

Nice to meet you WildIris. "Too much screen time is not good for the soul or the creative spirit." This is a perfect definition. Honestly the sudden drop in traffic, maybe I should publish the graph, has had a much greater influence than the corresponding loss of money. Anyway checking our priorities from time to time is never wrong. Thanks for your kind comment. :)

hypnodude, I agree with you on the making money from writing and I am not making money from my writing. I do get views though. On the purpose of my writing, it did start out that aI wanted to make money, but then it became therapy for my and then it morphed into wanting to help people through home making things and sewing and such. I also teach about the FEAR mongering and the Christ-Like characteristics in some peoples (as in a specific group of people and not singular people). I have had hubs on many different subjects. Alas I have come to the conclusion that this is more of another hobby then going out and working for McDponald's. Then again I don't have a car so I love to write and learn and this is perfect for me. I like to share, if that makes any sense to you.

I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate the comments you made on some of my hubs...One in particular that it seemed like no one wanted to touch...thankyou...

Also wanted to say that when my husband and I first "got religion" my husband would always pray for "time when there seems to be no time"...your hub reminded me of that prayer...yeah, the sun and wind is calling...and you must respond...me too...sometimes I spend the whole day indoors...and I don't even write for money...it becomes almost addictive...to see what others are writing...and to write for them in response...but there is also a lot of love here...which is good. Blessings and write when you want to...if you read my stuff and don't have time to comment just rate me up(smile)...and I will be happy with that.

Hey hypnodude! You rest your weary bones for awhile, but I'm betting you'll be around. It's kinda hard to let go of this community once you've gotten to know everyone :) I like your idea, and the way you are approaching it. I think you will find, once you have more articles (on any sites), people will find you. It for sure is NOT a get rich quick thing.

I like your style too, so hope you do stay in touch.

Hi Duchess, thanks for taking the time to comment. I agree with you, this writers' community is so great that it's pretty hard to avoid participating. Honestly, beside tweaking my old articles I'm working on a couple of new ones. I'm addicted to writing, thanks to all my friends here. And even if it's not a get rich quick thing it's worth being in touch with so many good writers.

Thanks for your kind comment, and have a great day!

I know I already commented on this article. It's just that after three months, you would think that one would earn at least $5.00, very disheartening. I have lots of work to do to get more readers and hopefully someone will click on an add. I do it all the time for fellow hubbers; it may be playing a 'mind game' or looking through pictures on how a certain company can remodel your kitchen. No money is involved, just click and read/watch. I guess everyone does not agree. More time consuming than I thought. No, I'm not giving up, but it is rather sad. Oh well, Peace.

hypnodude profile image

hypnodude 6 years ago from Italy Author

Support Med, earning money is really difficult, not only there are browser extensions which block ads and the common ads blindness. There is also the facts that you can't mention clicking, then the greatest difficulty which is having ads relevant to your hub, and this seldom happens. Moreover those readers who will click on your ads will be more probably coming from outside HP and this requires time, some luck and good keywords. Rebecca E and TattoGuy can help you with this. :) I like your writings and as someone said to me be patient, go on writing good quality hubs and everything will fall in its place. Maybe not much money, but at least some good friends. :)

And I don't wanna lose such a good follower like you. ;)

Hypnodude,

I as well have been taking a rest for sometime now. I do hope I get back to writing soon. The summer seems to have taken on a life of it's own and I am seeking out new avenues as well. Just the same, I hope I can spend a little time now and then catching up on reading some of my favorite hubber's hubs.

wingedcentaur profile image

wingedcentaur 6 years ago from That Great Primordial Smash UP of This and That Which Gave Rise To All Beings and All Things!

Good Day hynodude (I love that name!)

I'd like to start by I read your hub very carefully, as well as every single one of the following comments (I don't usually read all of the comments -- but I did in this occasion). Before getting started, let me also say that perhaps this DemandStudios is worth checking out. One commenter said they pay twice a week (but how much and under what circumstances? -- we'll see). Another hubber said that they pay you for every article upon approval. That is interesting.

There are a couple of basic themes that run through your hub and the comments. I understand that you were hurt (you didn't use this word, but that's what it sounds like to me) by a sudden fall off in traffic to your work. On the one hand you posed serious questions about whether the payoff is $worth$ all the effort you into the hubs.

On the other hand you are well aware of the barriers to ad income. You said it yourself in one of your reply comments -- some browser settings are arranged to prohibit display of advertisements, and of course, we cannot mention anything about clicking the ads -- obviously.

You are hurt by the sudden fall off in traffic, which you believe is no coincidence. You expressed doubts about whether your articles are good enough. From what I have read with this one, they are! You make the mistake that many people do, these days: judging themselves by the standards of the "market" -- which for you, like all of us, is the page views as opposed to the money, so much.

But you have to remember, there are so many things vying for people's attention, so many media outlets, so many things on the internet to be "allegedly" informed and entertained by. The market is fickle -- that why it's the market!

Now, I can see you shaking your head saying 'No, I didn't say that! Of course I don't judge myself by the market!' If I've overstated the case, I apologize.

But this brings me to a second mistake I think people make. First of all, I hope you are having all the success you want at Triond, Flixa, and other sites (sorry Redgage was closed to you, as you are not an American, Canadia, or British Islander).

But we are on the Internet. Its all the same Internet, no matter where one positions himself. I hear reports about people switching from HubPages to other places and then saying something like 'Bingo! My earnings went up' and so forth. I just wonder if those occurrences are a function of actuality or coincidence. Never mind about that though.

What I want to say is: don't feel bad about your skills as a writer because traffic dropped off dramatically. We must keep perspective and remember just how relatively new this Internet thing really is and what a revolution in communication this represents historically.

Just think, hypnodude. Just think, your hubs, yours alone -- your words have been read or at least seen (if not always commented on, obviously) by more people than ever read the works of, say, Plato, Herodotus, Shakespeare, Milton, Confucius, and so on, in their lifetimes! That hardly seems possible in retrospect, does it? But its true nevertheless. This brings me to my last point and I'll close this out.

Why do we know of Plato today? We know of him through the work of archeology. We found a portion of his writings. The scholarly consensus about their quality has convinced us that he was one of the great minds, certainly, of his age; and indeed, he seems to hold up very well against the great minds of all succeeding ages.

Imagine this. Imagine that fifty thousand years from now (50,000) our descendants --coming from wherever humanity has spread out to-- return to this world for an archeological survey. Imagine a survey team wanders over to the ruins of a Starbucks (American coffe lounge) and pulls up an ancient laptop. Of course, they have the means of repairing it and retrieving the data.

And the laptop is yours, hynodude! The laptop is yours! Imagine your words inspiring, educating, uplifting, creating beauty and truth, tens of thousands of years from now!

Listen, hypnodude, don't let the "free market" get you down. :-)

Ta-Ta!
