To Follow the Heart

By Tony DeLorger © 2013

All that I do,

and all that I am,

convinces me,

that the pursuit

of someone else's dreams,

just keeps me from myself,

what I am meant to be.

What I have discovered,

is we all pursue illusions,

presented to us as righteous,

yet we have had no say,

no consideration,

just the path presented,

and in trust we accept.

One can spend a lifetime,

in pursuit of a lie,

what is expected,

believed to be for the best,

but for whom,

straight from the lips of another,

not our own hearts.

How many times,

in melancholy,

have you heard the outpouring,

if only I followed my dream,

and in regret, realise what's been lost,

what could have been,

even in failure, at least the journey.

We all trust and love people,

but in the end,

our dreams are ours alone,

and no-one can see,

what we can see,

and know in our hearts,

what will give meaning to life.

Life is all about decisions and their consequences. When we follow someone else's decision, we are destroying our own dreams and in that, losing sight of happiness.

I am humbled by your connection, which goes to prove that sometimes we can share so much with our words, and ultimately read what we need to read to help ourselves through our pain and challenges. So glad it helped Phyllis. Take care and give your truth some wings.

Tony, I came here to read because the title of your poem is what I so needed to hear. For the first time in my life I have decided to follow my heart and take my own path. I have, all my life, followed what was expected of me from others. To go into detail would take a hub or two, or more, to write my last two years of self-exploration down -- maybe I will do that some day, but for now: Thank you for this message, this poem which means so much to my spirit, my path, my heart.
