Nellieanna's Song

Nellieanna might not think of herself as a mentor, but, to me, she has been at times. And I think to many others as well, as friends often are to one another. We gain wisdom from experience and from each other. She sent me a poem a while back that said searching for the truth is missing it. It was not something I understood at the time. Quite possibly I do not understand it even now in the way that she intended it, but it has great significance to me nonetheless. There are other things too.

Sometimes these pearls laid continue to be picked up months or even years after they have been laid. From various comments I have seen around HP, I suspect that I am not the only one picking up pearls she dropped. (Plus, it doesn't hurt that my traffic sources attribute quite a bit of my hub traffic to her profile. ;) hehe)

Anyway, this was something I wrote, meant to honor her. It seems a bit cheesy and sappy to me now, though. I did not want to seem schmaltzy and wanted to express a special sentiment that I thought others might relate to in some way. I'm not certain I was successful, but here it is nonetheless.

There is music in progress to go with the lyrics, but life happened and it is not complete yet with music. However, I decided to go ahead and publish the hub.

To Know You (Nellienna's Song)

There's so much I'd love to say to you

But there's no way to convey it all to you

There are so many ways in which you've touched my life

I will forever be grateful as long as I'm alive

For with every thought of you there is a blessing there to gain

My friend, in my heart is where you will always remain

To know you is to love you

To see you is to smile

You try to give the best of you

Because that's simply your style

That's why the warmth from your heart

Could set the night ablaze with just one spark

It felt like no one would understand

You did, though, and you did it as only you can

And when it felt to me like no one even cared

I knew never to doubt that you had me there in your prayers

As in your very own unique way you so selflessly love

In doing so you became a never-ending blessing from above

To know you is to love you

To see you is to smile

You try to give the best of you

Because that's simply your style

That's why the warmth from your heart could

Set the night ablaze with just one spark

Your beauty, your wisdom, and your grace

May they never cease to amaze

Your grit, your passion, and your drive

Inspire those around you to fully live their lives

To know you is to love you

To see you is to smile

You try to give the best of you

Because that's simply your style

That's why the warmth from your heart

Could set the night ablaze with just one spark

P.S.

Dearest Nellieanna,

If and when you read this hub, besides the love you gave me when I needed a friend, one of the most important things I take away from knowing you is to always remember life is happening in the present even when choosing to remember the past or to plan for the future. It's something I think many of us already know, but your repeated affirmations of it are engraved in my mind. I can even see your warm smile when I think of it. And I think of your apt name for the uncertain times, Fertile Flux, especially as I am in the middle of one now. Thank you.

Nellieanna is a role model par excellence. She is my momma in cyberspace. To tell what she meant to me, and still mean, would take me hours. I am truly honoured to have met her and to have the privilege of absorbing her beautiful personality and wisdom through her poems, comments and personal messages.

She does not try to give the best of her, she simply gives it because that's her style.

Shanmarie, this is a beautiful tribute to Nellieanna on her birthday :)

Hi Martie,

I am aware of the special bond you have with her. Treasure it: it's precious. But then you already know that, I'm sure.

Funny you should focus on that line in particular. It's the chorus that I never felt I got quite right. However, my friend that was trying to co-write said she wouldn't change a word. Said it made her tear up. So. . .*shrug*. . .

As for the sketch, yes it is one I did. I've never been terribly good at sketching because I lack the patience while sketching to get it to turn out like I see it in my head. When I was a teen, I used to draw more often, though. I started that one and set it aside, but my children found it and recognized her, so I figured I must've been doing something right. Haha. . .Anyway, my daughter insisted that it is complete just the way that it is. So, although somewhat abstract, there it is. I've always been partial to the abstract anyway. hehe

Your tribute is not only NOT schmaltzy, it captures many of the wonderful attributes of our own Nellieanna. I especially like that line (in the chorus), "Because that's simply your style." Nellieanna is such a caring person and shares her wisdom freely, while also being the type of woman who (back in my day) was called "classy."

I hope you return to include a video with the music when it's completed.

"Happy Birthday, Nellieanna!"

Thank you so much for stopping by, Jaye. You being the second person to comment on that line, maybe I hit the mark better than I thought. :)

Thank you, Theresa! You always seem to make me smile just by being YOU!

I did that sketch quite awhile ago, last summer I believe. I don't think I even have it anymore. But, I do not pretend at all that drawing is a strength of mine. Besides, that sketch looks better in a photograph than it did on actual paper. Haha. I actually did two of them. One was smaller because I intended to do the entire portrait, but my daughter cut her head out! I think it is floating around in my piles of writing scraps. So then I started this one that is used here and my daughter still did not want it finished. LOL The first one had her hair and the rest of the face included.

Thank you for the hug! I needed one tonight. I've been a wreck the past few months especially, but I've slowly regained most of my balance. Just not feeling terribly great tonight. I poked myself with a twist tie that was on a bag I scanned at work. (I'm a cashier). It drew blood so I used sanitizer on it, but now there seems to be an infection. And I know there is a sinus thing or a cold from others showing up sick to work and customers, but that's almost gone so - yay me. haha

Oh, by the way, after I was talking to you the other night about where I sell those articles, I sold two more! If you prayed for that, keep it up please. Hahaha. It's encouraging to think that more time and effort there might actually pay off. :) I'd love to be able to make a living doing that.

You have written a beautiful poem for a very special and talented lady. I consider myself lucky to have worked with her on a past project and truly understand every word you wrote.

Beautifully done. Your abstract drawing is beautiful and a lovely depiction of our Nelliana together with your outstanding poem.

Voted up, awesome, and beautiful.

Is that a new profile picture, tillsontitan? I really like that one. Thank you for your kind words. If abstract is truly the word here. To me, though, abstract art is more or less the non-traditional or expected.

Well! You’ve left me nearly speechless! Such a kind and beautiful birthday tribute, Shannon. Your sketch is quite artistic and recognizable; - but you didn't know me at 18! ;-) That’s such a nice birthday gift in itself! The comments from our dear friends are wonderful, too, complimenting your hub, song/lyrics, sketch, lovely sentiments, and saying many nice things about me. I’m truly humbled.

Sharing one of the amazing blessings of today, also, - something that simply happened which was greatly dreaded, but turned out very good instead.  What feels better than when that happens? I almost cancelled the appt, which was for 8:45 AM to see the ophthalmologist who did the cataract surgery on my good eye 10 years ago. Thoughts that it was going to have to be done again & serious dread of the prospect with its very possible risks to my only seeing eye were approaching terror. Imagine the surprise and relief at good news that he didn't see any need for it to be redone and that he had a simple solution to correct the fuzziness which has been plaguing my sight enough to limit the simplest tasks, including my own writing!

Behind the replacement lens he put in at that earlier time, there was a little support membrane that became amiss, causing the sight problems. The good news was that it could easily be repaired with laser. Simple & quick.  So an appt. for that procedure was set for 1:00 PM today. It's all done and I easily was able to drive home after a bit of recovery in the office!  How about that?  There will be a few weeks for full recovery (though it seems nearly perfect now!). But it was such a welcome relief! Someone up there must like me!

Without the one good eye, I'd be a basket case.  Of course, anyone would be in such a loss, but my whole normal world & longevity rest upon being able to live independently. These personal routines maintain physical & mental health at this age, so it would require other creative ways to survive at par otherwise, and would definitely cut into my age defiance thing. So, yes, this was a great birthday!

Ah, the birthday!  Yes!  Many lovely remembrances to make the day virtually sing!  Unexpected, special, personal kinds of things that touch me deeply, and all of you remembering me like this is among them. Thank you, dear Shannon and lovely friends. You’re all special to me.

Hahaha, Ed. I love it when you comment because you always make me smile! I guess that's why I just can't be annoyed when you call me Shannie. ;) hehe Nellieanna may be an angel in many ways, but I am certainly no hero! Many people hope to be able to touch the lives of others the way that she does. And she does it without even trying, which, to me, makes it an even more beautiful happening. I think that some people (if not everyone) are sent to our lives for a reason. The timing of when such people appear. . .or reappear. . .and are remembered for the things that they did or the way that they make someone feel uplifted or loved. . .Earth angels, I think. :)

Shan , when I first began writing here she was one of the first to comment ! She is so insightful and loving ! And I have missed out on sharing with her lately , shame on me ! She is a hero to me , so humble , wise , generous . You will come to realize that she is a rarity , a true angel and an amazing poet ! Luv Ya !

Ed, I purposefully took the time to build a meaningful friendship at great personal cost for personal gain, as well as a desire to give back. However, I also nearly single-handedly killed it when I did not cope in ways in which I normally would. It is a rare thing to find friends like that. And a hard thing to accept that I am still only human, just as human as anyone else. Things happen and that's that sometimes. It's one more thing in life to let go of and step forward without blaming myself anymore than I would my friend.

I do realize that she is a rarity, more than you and her both know.

Now I'm all geewillikers! Thank you, my beloved friends, for holding me in such high regard - surely more than I - or anyone, really - deserves to be. It makes me feel that maybe I've done a few things right and that's a nice feeling. I chug along as best I can, with keen awareness of some principles without which I just wouldn't BE. If I can't help, at least I don't want to harm, and never intentionally. At this stage of life, I can't afford to goof up too much or too irreversibly, though, of course, I do sometimes. I appreciate your kindly opinion of me!

We are all only human, hopefully doing the best we can, but we all still make mistakes from time to time. I read somewhere that our job is to love people without stopping to consider whether or not they are worthy of being loved. You do that and I know that you are loved, too. Even when you feel that you do not deserve the regard. I also know that you have done more than just a few things right.

She is one of my favourite poets, and the closest to me in style I know. I have dedicated two poems to her so far. Alas! She's had some difficulties and she is not as regular anymore. My love to her.

I see that you're from Texas. I so wanted to visit her in there, but it was not to be.

Your prose and poetry is not only beautiful but thoughtful and full of love. In Love and light.
