Today We Thought Of You

On Behalf Of The President Of The United States...

The day you were buried those words caught me off guard. I don't cry in public but those word left me in tears.

Memorial Day! The day we remember those brave men and women who have given some of the best years of their lives to make this country great. My mother and father were two of those people. Dad died when I was twenty-two. Mom died when I was fifty-two.

You would adore your great grandson H.J.and his little sister baby RA. You wouldn't recognize the other boys. They are fine looking young men, making their way through life as you would have wished. You would be proud of them. Especially Matt. The day he received one of the four highest honors in boot camp, he introduced us to the commanding officer of the base, and all the visiting dignitaries, with aplomb and perfect manners. You would have been right at home during the private reception for the four honorees. The only time I ever saw you in an officers setting was when Bob took us to the ward room for lunch on the USS Kitty Hawk. You were at home there.

I can only imagine what you must have been like when you were an officer in the army.

I know, it didn't look like I learned manners when I was a child, but I did. Knowing how to behave in all situations helped me to imagine myself a gracious lady in difficult situations. It really does help to know what fork to use first. I have been able to lead others through fancy dinners and tell them how to address dignitaries politely because you were my example. I thought your emphasis on such things was silly. Until the day I found myself in a formal setting, where I was the only one that knew how we were expected to act. Mom, We were singing at the officers club on Guam. I looked good because of your training.

We are orphans now. Duane passed away last year.

Everyday I wonder what you would thing about the news. I suspect you would be giving me history lesson after history lesson. We were talking about the state of the world today and a gal mentioned that Pearl Harbor was bombed because our nation underestimated the enemies strength. It feels like history is repeating itself.

There was never a day when you didn't keep up with the news in Washington. I tried to keep up with you, but you were always a step ahead of me.

Today, as I think of you I wax lyrical. Here is a poem for you mom.

I Thought Of You Today

I thought of you today

Summer heat demands inside play.

Son's boredom leads to photographs

Smiles at Christmas

Soccer players

Sightseeing

Silly hats

Snowboarders

Swimmers

Small boys

Summers passed.

Where You Grew Up

Proud Turkey On The Grounds Of The Veterans Hospital

You worked with this guy for years. Actually he the lived on the grounds of the V.A. hospital you worked, but you would agree some of the patients and staff were related to him.

We thought of you today

Young men saying,"Do you remember? She was always... We never thought, What a surprise when..."

"We always watched the A Team together"

We thought of your today.

You would have loved, been so proud to see those young men.

You always glowed when they were near,

You wondered if they ever thought of you when you weren't here.

Have no fear you are always near their hearts.

The last trip we took with you, about a month before you left us, was to Pacific Grove. You loved the ocean and being at David's

We thought of you today.

No regrets

We weren't so wise back then, but in your eyes we were the future.

Perfect

You had no regrets

To hinder

Good byes

You were tired and had to go

We thought of you today.

We still love you so.

We thought of you today as we looked for a picture for this hub.

The young men worked their magic

On the computer making long ago pictures reappear.

This one here!

You would have been proud when A.J.'s friend, captain in the army, presented the flag.

You didn't like how they presented Dad's flag, but you would have liked yours.

"On behalf of the President of the United States, we thank your for your mothers

service to our country."

They never say that part when you see the presentation of the flag in a movie. I was caught

unprepared. I hate to cry in public, but that's what I did.

The young men said choose that one,

I refuse to let the world spy

The look on my face,

About to cry.

I thought of your today and smiled

Today

A text request for coffee answered .

H.J. and Grammy have coffee with cousin Pammy.

H.J. will know Grandma Great through stories.

Know you he will.

Because we will keep thinking about you, today, tomorrow and the next

as long as we keep answering texts.

Thanks Mom

You would have been amazed by the clinical trials I have been involved in. You would have loved H.J. and baby RA. Thanks Mom for instilling in me the thrill of enjoying life even when it frustrates me or I am just tired. Thanks for your words that haunt me everyday. "Once you get there you will enjoy yourself, so get going". I would stay home and mope without those words.

Love you.

Beautiful, beautiful poem, what a tribute to your mother. My eyes filled with tears. Very, very different in tone, but I recently wrote a poem about losing my mother. Knife Edge. Thank you for sharing this with all of us. Theresa

Wow, this is from a whole different perspective - I guess it's about time someone paid a tribute to our fallen mothers. Thanks for sharing.

Ann1Az2- When my parents joined the Veterans of Foreign War association they kept putting my mother in the women's auxiliary. She was furious. She, but she got even when she became the commander of the post.

phdast7- I will go look at your poem. You can never replace a mother.

IMKarn- Thank you for your lovely words.

Joy56- Interesting how we frequently don't realize what we have leaned until they are gone. I have loads of those kinds of lessons that I learned without realizing that I had internalized them.

Oh so beautiful! What a lovely praise to a very special woman. It brought tears to my eyes and saddened memories of my own dear, sweet mother, but then I remember her words, telling me to smile even when she is gone. And how can I not smile, because without her, I would not have been blessed with her love and a beautiful life. How fortunate you are to have known such beauty and felt such love. Keep on smiling! Thank you for a wonderful read.

Blessings!

Hi tirelesstraveller,

The screen looks a little blurry now, I have to admit. My own mother died when I was still only a child - but I do remember her. She died on Christmas Eve. As time has passed, I learned to remember her with joy and thankfulness rather than pain and regret. It's a long journey, though, coming to terms with that loss.

I know she would have loved to have seen her grandchildren and that feeling is especially poignant at Christmas but I love the line in your poem where you say 'in your eyes we were the future' and I see that there is always the future and a legacy that we leave to those as yet unborn.

Thanks for your poem.

Whowas, Thank you for visiting. Tonight a dear neighbor died suddenly, it was lovely to read your kind word.

Break of Dawn, Thank you for sharing. There will always be times when the smiles are hard to find.

Not many if any day goes by I don't think of my mom so I understand. They will one day meet the ones they are missing now and who are missing them. It still isn't easy some days but the memories keep us in touch.

Beautiful poem.

Jackie , I haven't thought of this hub in a while. I had been wishing I had done something for her on Mothers Day. Thanks for reminding me I already had.
