WALKING THE BOARDWALK...by b. Malin

The Little Ones Exploring...
The Little Ones Exploring...

INDIAN SUMMER...

It's late October, and it's "Indian Summer" here on the Jersey Shore. The past week has been Beautiful with the Sun shining, and the Temperature in the Mid 70's. The Ocean has turned into soft waves that roll lazily onto the shoreline, while the Seagulls circle the skies, that are painted, Picturesque Blue. The "Little ones", the children, run along the beach, exploring the wonders that are found beneath their feet. Putting their new found Treasures into small sand pails. No one wants to see these days end, but as Seasons come, and Seasons go, you know this "Treat" will eventually give away to winter. But today, as Lover Man and I stroll the Boardwalk, we talk and "people watch"....and that's where this story begins.

There is a couple walking alongside of us. She is quizzing him as only a Woman can. The feeling we have, is that they have slept together the night before, and he has taken her for Brunch, in one of the Wonderful Restaurants along the along the Jersey Shore ...And now they are walking the Boardwalk. They are not married... How do I know that? Because she is LAUGHING at EVERYTHING he says. And Trust Me, HE'S NOT that FUNNY! He is about 50 something, not bad looking, with Blackish, Salt & Peppered hair. She, late 20's, maybe early 30's... a pretty Blonde. You can tell HE thinks he's a COOL guy...How do I know that? Because he seems to be Happy only talking about himself, and ALL the Women He has Dated. For example...

He..."I went out with the Woman for awhile and she wanted to go Biking. All I had was this Old Bicycle built for 2. She said, I'm not riding on that thing, it's ALL Rusty! So, I went and bought a NEW Bicycle built for 2, and then she didn't want to go biking anymore, she'd lost interest... I broke up with her". Once again She is Laughing, but sounds a little nervous, and then she says...

"So you seems to date a lot of Woman, has there ever been Anyone Special"? "Not really, he replies, I kinda like playing the field". Again She is Laughing. I'm thinking, Run, Girlfriend, RUN! This guy is a PLAYER! He's 50 plus, and he still likes playing the Field!

Lover Man and I decide to go out onto the Pier. They follow behind us. I said softly to Lover Man, "What did you think of him"? " Not much" is his reply. Then we realize that they are standing near us. She is Laughing once again, the Seagulls, seems to be Laughing...Lover Man and I start Laughing, It's like a total LAUGH IN!

I turn to Lover Man and say, "Well, maybe She'll be the One for him". Then we both look over at them. He is whispering something in her ear, and she is smiling up at him. Lover Man takes my hand, it's starting to feel a little cool, the Weather is changing...

Hey BMalin , Boy even I know some men are so shallow and yet these girls are too ! There are so many ! Too. Cute story though , you and lover man ! ha !

Indian summer at the beach, people watching and a most revealing conversation by strangers- what more could anyone ask for! Hehe.

Voting this delightful hub up across the board.

Hope you and Lover man had a wonderful evening after your walk.

Sunshine!!... I can't quite remember what that is. Many thanks to you and lover man, for the lovely walk, it was very refreshing :).

Cute story, but when they are that old and playing the field, you know there is SOMETHING bad wrong with him. RUN. haha

I would love to be down there instead of looking for a house. I hate moving.

Oh how I loved the song Under the Boardwalk! You ended with weather and what I am now hearing you may get I hope you have somewhere to go? It sounds so horrible! It sounds like you live in such a lovely place, but the world suddenly seems to be turning upside down.

b malin, ahh a walk along the beach with the one you love . Yes you see the differences in two different people that they can not see for themselves . but in reality don't we all want something we can never find. You don't know how cold the water is until you jump in . !

great write b, always look forward to seeing your name on my notifications .. be safe for the storm approaches ..

Really enjoyed your eavesdropping scenario on the Boardwalk, b. Very creative. But the Player guy in his 50s may have met his match. His 'girlfriend' is smart -she listens to his conversation, asks him questions about himself, and laughs a lot. Matches have been made with less. :)

If he can play the field at fifty, more power to him. He's smart enough to know he isn't marriage material and how many times can you tell the same jokes. He needs to keep rotating his audiance. Of course if she is a 20 something blonde he could simply spin her around a couple of times!

great story! So sad and true. Being a 50 something, single woman, I have no patience for the man you just described (and there are a lot of them) I prefer to weak with my kids, my self or a good friend! Thanks for this!

Hang on to Lover Man for dear life, dear - there are sooo many of these one-dimentionals, non-commitals out there, eh?...

altho, any 30 year old dating an over-50?

i smell an ulterior motive - like - money perhaps?...

OMG..laughing WITH you and AT them..

a total laugh-in!

voting up and sharing out, my friend..

This brings back fond memories of my earlier days along the Jersey shore. I can't tell you how many days I spent basking in the sun on the beach. I can't say I viewed many relationships like the one you so poignantly penned here, but it wouldn't take much to imagine it.

Thanks again, voted up!

As I read your hub I visualized the "icky" couple but what I focused more on was YOUR relationship and it came across as very soothing.

This is a wonderfully romantic hub and you and "lover man" are the main characters. I really enjoyed the read!

b. We are looking at moving to a town called Clarksville, in TN. We would like to go further but finances say no. It is bigger and has a Military base which will have medical care for my PTSD disabled husband and my daughter, who has PTSD from her father. We all can get medical care at the base and it is about 60 miles north of where we are now. Also we will have use of the commissary.

I agree the Jersey Shore is Great (NOT THE SHOW) which DOES NOT take place on our real Shore line.

The stroll down the boardwalk is a lovely story and a bit ironic considering its fate just a few days later. I am glad you survived the storm without damage to your home. I know you'll be glad when the water is gone and back where it belongs. I'm sure they will rebuild the boardwalk, but it is a bit heartbreaking. I wish you the best.

Hi b we have moved house and had no TV or internet for about a week and only heard about Sandy on the local radio, It was so frustrating wondering if all my hubber friends were OK. I am so pleased to hear that you are safe.

Loved this lighthearted tale of the overheard conversation while you and Lover Man were strolling on the beach only days before the storm, things can change so suddenly, I wonder if they are still strolling together, did she 'run' or hang around for the money while feeding the jerk's ego.
