War-born Fantasies

Fight the good fight, I've been told

Push onward, despite my wounds

Surrender’s only for the weak

Find the hope within the ruins

Struggle through a losing battle

until the lungs and heart dissolve

Defy the ways of life’s corrosion

endlessly testing one’s resolve

War-born is my definition

War-torn streets and homes

Desperation and despair

Bloodstained cobblestones

To love, is surely to lose it all

We lose it all, with every breath

Why must any man make the choice

between emptiness and death?

I made it to the edge of the earth

I knew that someday I might

I gazed off the cliffs into horizons

I witnessed the source of light

Blinded by the truth, I stumbled

Overwhelmed by it, I fell

over the edge of rhyme or reason,

into the outer realm of hell

As I drifted through the clouds,

I waited for the ground

to meet me, end me, wake me

My body splattered, and I found

the answers I've been seeking

ever since my silent birth

I closed my eyes and melted

into the molten core of Earth

Yeah, Ben, it's a never-ending battle inside. It makes us weak, it makes us strong but in the end, it's what makes the world go round (not only the money =))

Beautiful Ben. Really beautiful. I still stand in awe of your choice of words and imagery.

Of course it's not about actual war. It's the inner battle and you've described it with intensity and clarity. Great poem, Ben.

you should have been war-born indeed, you would have made a great warrior in the days of old. heroic and brave, determined, never giving up.

Wow Ben! I must say that when you are feeling this way you are at your best. Every time you write you top the last one, getting better and better.
