Counting waves upon waves ......

Have you ever sat just inside a picture window
and watched as the waves
rolled in from the ocean
Laying one behind the other
each patiently awaiting it's own turn
to throw itself
against the shore

Mesmerizing to say the least the sun
reflecting from each curve of a
blue green sea
on and on and then
as if you just arrived

A cool dark azure blue rims the horizon
signalling a slow evening approaching
And after a long and
perhaps hot day too
I sat once watching this in
tune with the sea
counting waves
just counting

And yet in no particular order
did I count .....I played a trick in my
mind to see if it was
really every seventh wave that rolls
in with a new power
reborn of strength
And I lost count over
and over

I imagined what it would be like to
not hear them much like a sweet friend of mine
and to always view the waves
in silence and I thought
yes its okay
And I fell asleep watching silver
white lines of waves
line themselves up
like lovers taking
turns with other lovers

When I awoke the sky was darker
much darker and the
phosphorus lights from the sea's
water itself accented each
wave and then I got up
and went out into the dark
to listen
To listen to that which I could
not see
Maybe I will sleep out
here tonight
