We Can Be Heroes (a poem about change and taking a stand)

We Can Be Heroes

by John Hansen 2016

What is important in your life -

Your family, job, or health?

Success, respect, or happiness,

Or maybe untold wealth?

Do you love your fellow man

Whatever race or creed?

Do you try to do what's right,

Like give to those in need?

Sometimes we need to take a stand,

To think outside the box.

Go where no man's gone before,

Remove the chains and locks.

Most of us have steady jobs

Working nine to five.

Security is what we seek,

Just go on with our lives.

We really need to take a chance,

To risk it on a hunch.

Be daring and do something new,

Give life a bit more punch.

Change is often scary,

We stick to what we know.

But it sometimes is inevitable

If we expect to grow.

We need to act like heroes

To shape tomorrow's world,

Not blindly follow other fools,

Do something new and bold.

Our culture needs upheaval

So society can grow.

Be a light to a new dawn,

Let others see your glow.

Be brave and take the path unwalked,

Speak of the things unsaid,

Write about injustices,

Pave the way ahead.

An artist needs to make a stroke

Or the canvas will stay bare.

A masterpiece awaits his brush,

So paint without a care.

A writer's words can change the world

With hidden truths revealed,

As long as he shows courage

And turns the cards he's dealed.

Teachers also have the power

To create a better world.

They mould and shape the active minds

Of every boy and girl.

So be the diamond in the rough,

Boldly take the lead,

Do what no one's ever done,

You are the change we need.

From little things, the big things grow,

Are words we should embrace.

Hand in hand, and step by step,

We'll create a better place.

Tackle tasks that can't be done,

Stand out from the crowd.

We can be heroes,

In a society of cowards.

Inspiring. Bravery is not the absence of fear but the overcoming of it. I just love everyday heroes.

Yeah man: "be the change you wish to see in the world". Great poem, put me in a contemplative place, thanks for that Jodah.

Some really good thoughts here, John, that you've expressed in a beautiful poem. There really are good people who together try to meditate the light into this world, and in some physical ways try to activate the change.

However, I must say that in the U.S.A. there are some people who need to sit down and shut up.

Thanks MizB. I think I have some inkling of who those people are you are referring to in the USA who need to sit down and shut up. All change is not, good change.

Great message through beautifully rhymed lines.

"From little things, the big things grow" like drops of water make the ocean.

Thanks for this wonderful message. Sharing on G+.

Oh what a great message here, John! You expressed reality in a way only you can. I thought this was brilliant! I think it throws out many things that all of us should be doing. Being BRAVE, is something we all should do. Stop thinking so much on the what ifs, and just do what we were born to do, and also do what we are supposed to do to be a great human being. Try to show and speak out on everything that is beautiful; differences in cultures, differences in personalities, differences in the differences of people and things' period. And do that in a fair way like a hero.

My goodness, you know I am a super big fan of David Bowie. Well, I don't know that you knew that, I'm just saying, "I AM A SUPER BIG DAVID BOWIE FAN" Lol. I love his song "Heroes" The song itself tells how two people could be heroes as a couple even if for just one day. They could break the barriers of everyones opinions and expectations, even their own. They could just take a day and enjoy each other, be in love, be themselves, and realize that's what it's all about. Living in love and life, doing it in the way that is best for them. It's sincerely an extreme love-song of sorts. It's a really great lesson of how one's life should go.

Perfect song, perfect theme, perfect poem, perfect hub altogether. Yes, John Hansen, you are a HERO! :)

Great song, great poem. The philosophy is spot on and I like the points you make. It is indeed necessary to take a stand and act on what we believe to make a better world. More of us should do that.

What a great comment Missy. If I didn't know you were a David Bowie fan..I do now:) He was great. I went to see him live in concert..more years ago than I am willing to admit. That is still one of the highlights I will never forget. "Heroes" is one of my favourite of his songs as well. Thanks for the "hero" tag you gave me. Not sure if I deserve that myself, but I'll gladly accept it, even from one person. Have a wonderful weekend.

Yes Mike, I have my poets cap on at the moment. It is something that just seems to flow when I pick up my pen...without even really thinking about it. I sometimes wonder if the issues I raise in my poetry are ever seen by anyone who can actually make a difference. Then if enough everyday people read them..there is power in numbers, and collective minds.

Jodah profile image

Hi Phyllis, maybe the idea to start a new creative writing website and how it has been embraced inspired this poem. Thank you for the support, sharing and pinning.

Powerful and wise words shared here in poetic form, John!

I truly believe each and everyone of us can be a hero each day, whether just by lending a listening ear or even something as small as a smile to let another one know you acknowledge them. A kind word does wonders to lift up a fellow human being.

I did a "hero" hub as I was so distraught about all the bullying going on these days which has caused some to take their own life! Some resort to cutting themselves just to know they are still alive to not have grown numb to the pain inside.

As always, great poetry.

Peace and Blessings

Almost made me cry. This is the written truth that is so deeply resting inside my heart. I feel both the pain and joy that in what I have overcome, and now being the change I want to see in the world. You have managed to portray in a poem what I preach in different writings that I do in different ways. I had to take the time to write this comment because words almost fail me when I try to say how much this poem means to me. Absolutely wonderful.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 9 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

What a lovely comment Bella. I don't like to deliberately make anyone cry, but if something I write touches another person that deeply I take it as a true honour. It is obvious you are a sensitive soul who really cares about society and the world. Keep writing to spread the message in whichever way you can. This comment touched me too. Thank you.

Wonderful poem and very inspiring!

My life has been such that I had to be a 'Hero' many times , as you have mentioned in the beautiful poem. And let me add that such 'Heroes' are able to achieve their aim, most of the times. And even if they don't, they become too strong to face any challenge. Because time and circumstances make them like that.

Thank you for sharing this excellent hub!
