What is Love

The Universal Lesson

Source

Love is pain.

It is sacrifice,

giving for another,

giving of yourself,

your tears,

your heart,

your blood,

your worry,

your sweat,

your soul.

~~~
Which is why it is so rare.
Why you don’t dare.
~~
It hurts.
It’s hard.
It takes courage.
~~~

To know it but once is to lose the very air you breathe,

to have one’s own heart seize up inside from…

a whisper, a glimpse, a mere fleeting thought in time.

To be in the source’s prescience is the sweetest pain imaginable.

Losing the source is like having one’s heart cut out

while watching, wide awake, but unable to shout.

~~~
So you hide inside, now afraid of what it’s even about,
deep inside your chained heart lest you feel such pain again.
The eternal paradox that binds one to the lower plains,
to love and be loved can only end in pain.
There is never an escape, never any gain.
It all has to end. The cycle will reclaim.
You can call it what you wish.
Hide under any other name.
It doesn’t matter how you fight. It’s all the same,
the paradox of moving on, ascending if you will,
is knowingly accepting what you know will kill.
You know it’s coming, pain that crushes and blinds,
the gut wrenching agony when your left behind.
That’s what life is when love goes away.
That’s why I want you to stay.
~~~

But there exists a much larger lesson in this flow.

I can’t believe you haven’t figured it out, you just don’t know.

Only by accepting it can we ever hope to grow.

To hide inside and withhold that which the heart has to give

is to never really know what it is to live.

One must do it over and over throughout one’s time

if you ever wish to move up the karmic line.

It is why we exist in space and time.

It is how the light warms the dark.

It’s the soul’s target mark,

the reason for being,

feeling not seeing,

reeling not breathing.

~~~
Feel the knot deep in your chest?
Only so long can you ignore its request.
It can only get out through emotion not reason.
it can only exist for a short season.
Don’t shut your heart out of fear
...of why you were placed here.
Each has a lesson to learn and one to teach.
Only through love will you ever reach
the place where energy flows free…
the place you are meant to be.
A quite intense write. Very introspective. Poetvix I think you have embodied the translations of love quite aptly. You know I enjoy your writing for one reason, the fact that you can honestly delve into a moment of repose affectually! You know how to put yourself in the moment and that is what makes you a Great Writer! Sincerely, Matt.
A wonderful expression of what love is, and why it can be so scary yet so needed, a very insightful poem thank you so much for sharing it
Nighthag ~ Indeed, I can think of no more frightful thing in all the universe than love. People have fought and died over it, worked, slaved, suffered and sacrificed. If it is the fire the fuels the universe, then on occasion, things are going to get burned.
Thanks for dropping by and for your comment.
If love comes without devotion,it isn't love,lasting devotion comes with the appreciative loyalty to the idea of love and not simply addiction.;)
Mentalist acer ~ Hmm, you got me thinking. I think the idea of love vs. addiction, the idea that a co-dependency on another can be viewed as love, and further, the question of whether or not love can exists without those involved becoming co-dependent is indeed worth further exploration.
Thank you for your insightful comment :).
MMMMM, what i think love is? Love is like the first bite into a cheese burger filled with bacon and double the beef, lol, don't curse me out poetvix, i was compelled to tell that joke. Alright heres my real deal answer, stand back for this...
Love, is when showing couresty to her the one you love by opening every door in her path, wiping her tears, getting lost in her eyes, then kissing her beautiful lips, being overwhelmed by the essence of she. See what you made me write, lol, good read, poetvix...
poetvix profile image
MrDSpade2 ~ Curse you out? Now why on earth would I do that? I happen to love a good cheeseburger myself! Personally I think coffee, chocolate and ciggs are only half a hair below sex on the pure indulgence scale.
Ok for your serious answer... sigh... I never knew under all the deliciously dark tales lurked the heart of a true romantic. This is the best I have heard yet! On behalf of women everywhere, thank you sir!
Vix I share this poem with my past feelings of lost love, I have felt the sting and pain of losing a closeness that I have never fully recovered from, the lost love left me empty for life, never replacing that feeling we once shared, gone like dust in the wind, forever left empty.
I have moved on with my life, however my soul cries out for such a love again. I thank you for sharing this eloquent, brilliant piece.
poetvix profile image
poetvix 5 years ago from Gone from Texas but still in the south. Surrounded by God's country. Author
Saddlerider1 ~ I'm so sorry about the lost love. "It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all" is the saying, I think. While ultimately I believe it to be true, it doesn't take any of the sting out.
I guess if life really is like a roller coaster then love has to be the peak thrill point in the course.
Thank you for your visit and your kind words. Happy hubbing!
Great poem. I love your depth.
To me, the highest love possible does not take effort, does not require reciprocal expression and does not have either a beginning nor an end. I have that love with two people on my path in life and neither have become my partner in life, yet the love "Just Is".
It brings a power of peace that is ineffable. "Just Is"
A classic indeed LOVE the elusive Blue Butterfly, slippery Mercury, never to be held onto for very long. Like that greased bar, so slippery you can never climb to the top. Love is a mystery and has plagued mankind with it's mystery since we walked upright. I have loved and been loved in my time, yet could never hang on to it for very long.
Why does it flee us? are we so lost in ourselves that we can't appreciate someone else loving us for to long? I don't know the answers, maybe that's why I'm a recluse today. Found and lost love to many times. lol
poetvix profile image
poetvix 5 years ago from Gone from Texas but still in the south. Surrounded by God's country. Author
Sligobay ~ So good to see you. Thank you kind sir, your words are most greatly appreciated.
Saddlerider ~ I have to believe the capacity for love to be the last good, strong quality left in humanity that may actually save us from ourselves. Love comes in so many forms. A mother's love for her child will keep her going long after she should have fallen over in exhaustion. A man's love for his country and family can give him the strength to knowingly sacrifice his own life without hesitation. If there is actually some force, some energy driving the universe love has to be a part of it or I think we would have been wiped out of existence long before now.
I think we all ultimately lose love in the end as we all perish but somehow hanging onto that ability and willingness to continue to love knowing it will end painfully is equivalent to hanging onto one's soul. When the capacity for love is gone so is the soul.
Very interesting. Sure makesvone think, very good.
When you read my writings you will wonder how did this lady Love the man she was married to for a life-time? He was a power-Over verbal abuser, not only to me but to all our children. But with all my heart I loved him. He loved me until he couldn't "get me" any more, than he stoped loving me. Thinking back I think I just loved, loving hard. Loving unconditionally gave me my power. But believe me, I never want to love that way again.
Don't get me wrong , I would love a good lover, a good friend, a companion. But no one that I always have to live up to his exportations .
Awww, our little poetvix showed us her soft and gushy side. See my dear, your heart is not as hard or biased as you sometimes express. Not that you ever said you do not love, but I remember a few comments that you question it in yourself. Well I got news for you dear...your heart is as big as mind thinks it can't be, it is bigger than you ever imagined it will be and it is capable of more than you ever dreamed you were willing to be. H ( Her ) + E ( Enthropy ) + ART = HEART ... An Equation that makes no sense, has no basis in reality, yet explains absolutely everything in every way = Love
I wrote something a while back called As Love Evolves , You should read it, I think you would relate, the two are very similar hubs and being one of my favorite young writers, I would welcome your opinion. This is not a blantant plug for anything or anyone to read my hubs.
To clarify, Poetvix readers should immediately read all of her hubs twice, before reading anything of mine that i might have just mentioned or told Poetvix about. Get to it you content starved lemmings. March....
With that said, love this hub my dear. It is one of your most honest and dare I say literary, yes that is the word for it. It reads easily. Yet is not shallow waters...Like it, no love it. Keep on Hubbing. Blake4d
Powerful poetry here... I have so fallen in love with the way you write...
To hide inside and withhold that which the heart has to give
is to never really know what it is to live.
Such true words... Hats off to you Lady! You will see me hanging around here more often! Bless you! Sofs :)
Poetvix-the pain that can accompany opening ourselves up and becoming vulnerable, is all worth it. Without love, we wither. There are so many different kinds of love, with the romantic being a slice of the whole cake. We are all lucky to get a little slice of all kinds in this life time. Great poem which had me hitting many buttons.
Minnetonka Twin - Thank you. Your comment is as kind as it is insightful into that wonderful, essential component of the human condition, love. How synchronous for me you brought up all the different types of love. I have spent much of the last two hours thinking about the concept of tough love as it relates to the fine line between pc and polite, respectful, yet honest discourse. God bless and happy hubbing.
Dearest Epi - It is so good to see you. It makes me smile that you returned. You are so kind as always. I am well. I have been following a thread of comments since last night and am enthralled with what I feel it illustrates so well which is some of the basic, fundamental differences between the left and right internal mindsets. I'm currently dissecting it comment by comment in an effort to establish this. I have eight pages of notes and I'm not to the end. I know, I'm a nerd. :) Sending only the warmest and best energy right back at you, you fine specimen of a gentleman you! God bless and keep you always and may you hub on for decades to come!
