What is Reality?

The canopy of the night sky

Features ornamental lights

Stars of a vast Universe

Only ever seen at night

The mystical moon star

Flaunts her silvery beams

Sending magical wisps of mystery

Which affect the nature of dreams

The fantasy of our dreams

Both colorful and bizarre

A journey into hidden realms

Seemingly here and yet so far

Far from life’s reality as

We know it to exist

Or anything experienced

And perhaps what we’ve dismissed.

So what is reality?

Except what we perceive

Is it real or illusion

Of that which we believe?.

Vote for which is closest to your belief.

Do our perceptions change reality or does reality stay the same regardless?

Oooh cannot wait to see some of her work. No surprise she is gifted like her Dad.

I know that roller coaster ride. I sometimes wonder if we are just addicted to the roller coaster and like the twists and turns and the unforeseen dramatic dips. Its the upside down circles I don't care for much. I often think when I am on the flat part of the ride...Whew that was some ride!

Life is good here though too. Summer is entrancing and with the holiday season near, the energy in our city is changing to anticipation and good spirits.

Delighted to be with your kindle spirits again.

Life has been like a roller coaster ride lately, luckly with more ups. Wait until you see my daughter art work lately, what brillant bright light she turned out to be.

Life is good, how is yours?

Hey you, long time no see. So happy to see you again my friend.

In the respect you mention, the visionary style dreaming I do link to reality. It is through these visions/ imagination many inventions come into being. Like your beautiful art. I marvel at that type of vision.

Expanding and contracting our circle of life seems to be recurring.

If one dreams it, they concieve at least the feeling of that dream in reality.

It's much easier, when one knows how.

When ones own mastering circle of life is at large, then confront each problem you'd desired, either master it or throw it out of the circle and then personal life circle grows greater once again.

So far I do not view the world and everything in it as a dream. In that respect I do not link reality with dreams. Our perception of the world and everything in it shapes our view of reality. I think I have explained in another discussion we were having.

John King IV 4 years ago

I quote from your own writings:

"So what is reality? Except what we percieve..."

pennyofheaven profile image

pennyofheaven 4 years ago from New Zealand Author

Yes I agree. How do you see me linking reality with dreams?

John King IV 4 years ago

My suspisions where correct penny. You do link reality with opinion or dreams of the mind.

I see these things as different. Surely penny you might agree that a photograph of the night sky is not the same thing as the actual night sky.

I think your perception definately defines and can alter your reality, or at least your vision of what reality is. I would like to refer you to a poem of another hubber that this reminded me of a bit.

Take a look at this one, maybe it will inspire you as it did me.

Great poem. Reality is what it is. Some lose touch with it, usually people in high office. Down here on the ground reality is what we live with everyday of our lives. The person who can change reality in real terms looks back at you in the mirror everyday. Yep you guessed it. YOU.

vote up / awesome

Very true alladream74. A thought too can change a reality.

Reality can be shaped, distorted, bent to some extent. The over riding factor is time, some changes take a long time and others a short time.Think of this, you can totally change the reality of those around you by doing something out of the norm, speak to a person you do not usually speak to and ask them how they are, really listen to their response and empathize with them-you will have shifted the course of their reality and your own. The results of which can not be determined immediately as your name may come up six months later at a dinner party as "someone who really listened to me!" and blah blah blah...

Hi CM

Fascinating to think that reality never changes?? If it is only our perception of reality that changes, does that mean the four seasons are never changing? Its mind boggling when I analyze this further. Everything therefore in the physical sense can change in an instant if we realize the power of our perception. And it could be as you say, we can control a lot more of our reality! Thanks for your comments. Much food for thought!

Good Hub, penny, I think it is up to us to change. Reality never changes, it is just that we wake up to it when we mature in our life experiences. We can control as much of reality we want in our life. If I could have a workshop on Reality, I would invite those people who were classified as schizophrenic, and those with other psychological conditions such as Paranoia. These people are highly deceived by what they can not see on a nonphysical level. A person's maturity is effected by their parenting, their health, their training on how to handle stress. Dreams may be a peak at the reality of what lies within us, our fears, our desires, and our needs. To be in tune with such meanings of dreams is to be able to accept reality, and accepting reality is what determines our own destiny as well. Thank you.

Hi,penny! FANTASTIC read! GREAT hub/poem! Loved your writing. I am very envious of your talent. I dabble in abstract/prose but I am not brave enough to post any of my stuff for I hate rejection and besides, I am insecure. But I am your fan and follower. If that is okay with you. Sincerely and Respectfully, Kenneth Avery, from a rural town, (Hamilton), in northwest Alabama that reminds you of Andy Griffith's Mayberry. Peace and Hugs to YOU. Wonderful work.

Though it seems like there is one standard reality, there's not. Reality is what we perceive on an individual basis, or at least that's my reality. Thanks for the poem; it really got my brain thinking.

Thanks for the hub, I'm looking forward to reading more from you.

reality like time works for each person within each person perception within their own minds eye. We each create our own reality and then we chose to either live it. play around with it or throw it out and start again. some people just wait around and do nothing, then again that is their reality hehe...........

pennyofheaven profile image

Thank you Marina. It is kind of thought provoking. I think all the time about it. Funny that. The main question was does reality stay the same regardless of our perceptions. Maybe I will reword it if I can. Or add another one. Thanks for the heads up.

Marina Lester 5 years ago

Nice poem, always an interesting topic. Debates could go on forever on this. :) I'm not sure I voted right, I was a little confused :P I felt maybe it should have been phrased, same or change, I donno :P I think perception changes reality, when I man dies a universe dies with him, we make our own worlds. But that of course is to a point, most things are never absolute. Who's to say if the pessimist or the optimist is right, I think they both are... Haha, I'm realizing I could go on and on trying to put what I think the best way. To each his own, nice poem, probing topic! Peace pennyofheaven! :D

Justilvie. Thank you I am glad you liked it. Chuang Tzu has a dream he is a butterfly and when he wakes he says am I a butterfly dreaming I am a man or a man dreaming I am a butterfly. We might never know.

I have done that too in my dreams, especially when its a great dream. Other times if I try to go back to finish off my dream... another plot presents itself and there is that moment when I think, .....awww wrong bat channel..... and go with it any way. Haha

Wonderful Poem, wakes up the sleeping brain cells.

I often thought when I was younger what if my dreams where the reality and my waking time my dreams... Usually on the days I woke up and wanted to stay in the dream state instead. I have managed to go back to sleep on occasion and continue a dream. so...

Reality is our perception of it...for reality is determined by the beholder. Does magic not exist just because there are people who don't believe and cannot see? No, perception is what we are capable of seeing, and our capabilities lie in what we are willing to try and our determination to expand our consciousness and understanding. Love you my sister.

I don't believe reality changes based on perception, but rather that personal experiences gives us varying perceptions of what is reality. A seldom travelled road is not dangerous to cross except when it is. A busy road is dangerous to cross except when it isn't. We can create our own danger or safety on either, but our ignorance or awareness would not alter reality.

I believe we are all children of the Universal atom explosion, whence we came there we will return, do we pass through a thin vale into another dimension? when our time expires here on earth, or do we simply become stardust?

Religions of our world hang onto faith of a heaven and hell. We either become dust and go back to the earth or our souls move into that other dimension unseen by the naked eye. So many questions and not enough time to find the answers.

Hi, reality to me is quantum physics! the reason why I say this is, according to quantum theory there is no such thing as reality! how we percieve the world is changing all the time, and can change according to how atoms work! now for the main point, your poem was terrific! lol rated up, loved it, cheers nell

Getitrite: Disregarding perception for the minute. Our objective world is in a state of constant change. How does it stay the same?

MartieCoetser profile image

Well said! Reality is relative - estimated by comparison; not absolute or complete; subjective to personal interpretation. That is why we should never underestimate the beliefs of others. What I don’t believe today, I might believe next year due to new experiences that has changed my perception and interpretation of reality. Thanks for this great, thought-provoking poem, pennyforheaven!

awesome hub, it depends on the belief of that person and what honestly you want in life. The reality is your own, you have the power to change it. Some people think that you are not in control of your destiny that some supreme being is. There are many ways you can go about this.

getitrite profile image

Good poem, penny.

I think reality stays the same. It is only different individual's perception of reality that changes...because Reality is objective.
