His duty - your neglect

As I bend down after your parade and
retrieve the colors

I ponder the your actions and
remember of certain others

I know a place where they care for old
flags and remember

Where old men know the procedure
to dispose ...dis-member

He never asks a questions in taking them
into his wrinkled grey hands

To dispose of it properly and the ashes too
he understands

"Thank you son " not much more
to be spoken

"Thank you for caring ..............your flag
looks a little broken"

With that he smiles and folds it carefully
placing it on a pile of others

"Don't you worry now son we make more every day
tell that to the others "

I used to know how to fold the flag, when to fly it but I might have trouble doing it now. Folding in a triangel I might be able to handle but there used to be rules like not flying it in the raiin etc. Now I see flags in teh rain and other bad weather. Is it because of polyesters making flags water resitant or is it that the rules are forgotten, or the respect?

A lovely hub! I too wonder about the rules. It seems to me that I never used to see an American flag worn out or tattered. It made me so mad to see our Canadian flag that way. I recall one day my husband going into a restaurant (we were not going to eat - just driving by) and complaining about the disgusting condition of the flag outside. The next day it was changed. His dad used to drive around the countryside with new flags in his car trunk and approach farms whose flags were no longer in good condition. How entrepreneurial is that! But it is all about respect I think.

Thank you for this reminder. Veterans organizations accept tattered red, white and blue for proper disposal.

Profound message here. Unfortunately soldiers in all countries are a group which is really under appreciated and even mistreated. Thanks for raising this in this wonderful write! I enjoyed the use of the flag as a symbol - they represent the country, outstanding citizens only to be folded away. Awesome.

I gave you one of my rare: Beautiful s. Some of my proudest moments were when I served my town as a color guard, not quite an honor guard.

thanks for refreshing the memories.

Thank you for this piece. I still cringe when I see someone lowering a flag and allowing it to touch the ground.
