Gilded and now gone.......

What he'd given unselfishly
and paid for himself
he did that for us
he walked for
a thousand miles
or more
From Antietam
to Gettysburg
to Beaufort and
then back
In a letter home he said
thank you for sending the new
shirt and shoes

Felt the burn of the
bayoneted rifle in Shiloh then
a mini ball in his leg
at the Wilderness
Saw the hunger and dysentery
in winter camp
And proudly watched for Abe
at the front
in Richmond
saw his shadow
in the pines at the plank
roads between

I ask why he stands at
each place where lie
the remains of a thousand
more like him
But to watch over the
granite stones
And remember
Yet I wonder if time has
erased the gilded tears
from his face
........perhaps they dried
in centuries of
drying suns
and dying sons

Beautifully done. Awesome. and sharing, Voted Up

you've taken an intense part of history, gilded it yourself in humanity...I just love this.. (I'm also in awe of all the research you must've done give this so much verisimilitude. Well done!)

Wow, cowboy - a history lesson brought to life with the passion of your words!

Sadly, i see the beginnings of a new 'civil war' as we speak - and the lines are divided almost exactly as they were before..

I hope you are correct - and Albert Woolson really IS the last civil war veteran..

up and sharing, my friend..
