When I think too much ........

free verse

The wind may be howling and the fire
may glow a soft yellow
through the glass
In the privacy of my own mind my
thoughts become introspective
deep and dark
sometimes
And when that happens the sound of the
wind shrivels away to the cold reaches
of winter
The coals of the fire warm the
black iron of the night
and I
I wonder about the nature of man
his true purpose
Is it possible that he overestimates his
importance here on earth
I think so
But it is the evils of mankind
that I ponder most
That long devide of an old scar
that always runs deeply
right down the center
of his heart
The one that constantly proves
one thing
That mankind and me as well
Could do so much
better
So much better......

Reminds me of the great Eddie Vedder song "society". But the good news is that in your case you have chosen to stay a make society a better place. Thanks for a good hub.

A wonderful observation about mankind, however I don't think we will ever change. We have been greedy, selfish, warlike, killers and hungry for power since the beginning of mankind. All we can do as mortals is learn from our past and try to improve and make our present world a better and safer place to live in. The way were heading, I doubt we will survive. Peace and blessings I send to you this day my fellow poet.

Hello ahorseback. I have a vocabulary for commenting at poems usually entailing one word of a few choices. The greatest of these is the word

'Nice.' which to 'me' means "I am Speechless" and must ponder in the garden or sitting on the front chair, which is near a chair of honor for my dad of late back 2005, yet the garden offers a bench of both, being that of mom and dad.

This poem receives that accolade - Nice. Now, to fill the cup and decide - garden or front porch, backyard or watching passer-bys who cannot see me. Not of either or, more, closer to a nor since both offer the same . . .

Thank You and off I go . . .

Your running thoughs touch so many sensitive and important areas - too deep to probe or interpret casually in mere commenting on it. Maybe talking over coffee might do it. But for sheer beauty of poetic expression, this jumps out at me, Ed:

"The coals of the fire warm the

black iron of the night . . . ."

Wow.

Thank you for this. Yes, I could have done better, but a private, lower middle class citizen who inspired others to donate over $42,000.00 in toys is pretty good.

Beautiful! It reminds me of how important -- and how beautiful -- it is to take time and be introspective. I could start a litany of social commentary here, but I would love to read more of your poetry...
