When Love Rings True

If you ever stop loving me, I don't believe you ever loved at all

Because love keeps no records of wrong

Admiration, appreciation - those things can fade

You don't even need to like to give those things away

But disappointment, disapproval - those things are temporary too

When love rings true

Beautiful thoughts and I firmly believe in the same definition of love as expressed by you!

No ifs or buts, no rights or wrongs , if it is true love , it is unconditional.

Thanks for sharing this lovely poem!

Hello, Velour. Thank you. I don't know about forgetting, but we definitely do not hold past transgressions against those we truly love.

I had a best friend for years and we would date each other but we weren't exclusive. Over the years people came and went in my life and vice versa. Then one day we realized that out of all the people who we tried to be with none ever stuck. Once we or they started seeing things that were intolerable the relationship was over. Yet, my best friend and I, loved each other more as the years went by even with all of our imperfections. We realized that we were each others soulmate when we discovered we were perfect for each other. We spent twenty-years searching for someone who would love us unconditionally when that person had been staring us in the face the whole time.

You write the truth in simple yet profound poetry. When love rings true, sometimes we are distracted by something temporary.

Hi, Ruby. Once in a lifetime or never at all, it seems, if we're talking about romantic relationships. It's rare in other relationships, too, but it happens. And it's the stuff lifelong friendship is made of. :)

Oh, it's the hub just prior to this one. Reflections of a Bridesmaid. HP decided to defeature it because of a pixelated picture. I assume it's the one of the bouquet, but I did the hub from my phone and it didn't look pixelated to me. So I changed it to a small capsule to see if that made it better, but I guess not. I suppose I could just remove that picture altogether or find a different one to use. Just trying to protect her privacy.

Dear Shanmarie, I have learned the hard way that love is not immortal. It can become ill, or old, and die, it can be damaged, hurt and killed. However, loyalty, habit, mutual respect, or perhaps a fear of the unknown may keep people together. Disappointment is always the result when people believe that true love is immortal. But yes, sometimes love can last a very long time. If this is the case in our lives, we should be so grateful and eager to protect this love against the onslaughts of life.

Thought-provoking poem!

shanmarie profile image

shanmarie 6 days ago from Texas Author

Hi Martie,

Life is certainly unpredictable no matter how much we like to think we have it together at times. When I wrote this, I was thinking about deep, unconditionally love. Or as close to it as one can be anyway. I am not sure humans are capable of true unconditional love. But we come close under certain circumstances; a mother and child, for instance, or lifelong lovers. Keep in mind, I am somewhat of a romantic toward relationships in general, not just lovers. I forgive easily and I don't hold grudges. I know that life itself, however, is not a fairy t and the the sappy happy endings in books and movies that bring people back together don't happen all that often. That said, if love is really strong enough to be that real and not merely general affection, it just won't end. Someone told me once that people place conditions on unconditional love and therefore it isn't. Maybe so, but the only one who can place those conditions is the one loving. No one else has that power. It's impossible because we cannot control how or if someone else loves. One can love with the person who is loved never knowing it. Or stop and the other not know even. So basically what I am saying is that if something happens to break a friendship or a relationship up, the love just wasn't strong enough.
