When The Angels Came For Him

My Brother and My Dad

In 2003, my brother, Ralph Jr. (Rusty) was struck down with cancer at the age of 45. My Dad was heartbroken and just three weeks later we lost him to a heart attack. When Rusty passed away I wrote a poem called Farms In Heaven which I posted in an earlier hub. Writing poetry was a release for me. It has been a way to make sense of losing the people I loved. I guess this poem I wrote for my Dad was kind of a run off of Farms in heaven.

In Loving Memory of My Dad

When the angels came for him,

He must have told them no.

But promises of no more pain,

Convinced him, he must go.

He lost his son to suffering,

He needed not the same.

A son he loved so very much,

A son that shared his name.

So if there's farms in heaven,

He's gone to lend a hand.

And side by side with his son,

He's reached the promised land.

I am very sorry for your double loss; as your poem says though, your father and brother are side by side in a farm in the promised land...

Thank you. It's hard to believe it's been eight years.

This is beautiful Diana. My father passed away 3 weeks after my grandmother (his mother) died. It's been 12 years now, but the pain remains.

Your poem is a fine tribute filled with love.

Another beautiful poem and would work well to be read at the funeral. The last four lines really bring it together. Nicely done. One of my regrets is that my parents passed away before my writing talent became apparent. They did get to hear my recordings and that will have to do I guess. This was one of their favorites.

This was read at my dad's funeral. Farms In Heaven was read at my brother's funeral. We lost them just three weeks apart.

Glad to hear that and I bet there was not a dry eye in the place. I lost my parents in 2009 three weeks apart too.
