Which Truth to Believe

In your mind, you're right

In my mind, I'm right

If I allow myself to instead agree with you,

I cry and think less of myself too

But if I allow myself to agree with only me,

I know that somehow just can't be

Perhaps the truth is somewhere down the middle

And we both just reacted to the way the other reacted to the middle

Shannon, I had to read this twice, but it is very intelligently written and even though it is short it makes the reader think.

Hi, Jodah. I'm glad it made you think. That was my intention. :) I was thinking about how we can't change someone else's perspective of us or our actions if they don't want to change them, no matter what our own truth may be. But that doesn't mean we have to change ours completely or at all, especially if another's perspective belittles something good in us.

This is an excellent piece on a subject that most do not like to dig deeply into. Somehow coming to believe that our truths are not ultimate truths leaves us standing on shifting sand and it is uncomfortable. But I think it is what we need.

Wonderful perspective with great truths in it. Relationships...friendships...they are tough for sure. We are such complicated creatures, aren't we?

Excellent poem. Shanmarie.

Let me find and mind my mind from,

Some one, who pretends.

Some acts, too kind,

Some facts, well defined,

Then all would be fine again.

They say there's always two sides to every dilemma, maybe meeting in the middle and really listening, but that doesn't always work either. Now you've got me thinking, that's good!

Shifting sand indeed, Eric! I wonder if that's the very reason some distances are never bridged. No one likes to face uncertainty.

Hi, Bill. We're all complicated creatures for sure. But we're also simple, too, aren't we? We all have the same basic wants and needs and that will never change.

Hello, Hari. People keep saying my poem makes them think. Yours certainly does the same. Thanks.

You always get us thinking, dear Shan.

It's always uncomfortable when we believe we are misunderstood by another ...and there's nothing really we can do about it.

Very good poem!

Hi, Ruby. I'm glad I made you think. Makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something with the things I write. LOL. I'd like to believe that meeting in the middle is the answer and that it can at the very least offer the understanding of another's perspective.Understanding another perspective can possibly change our own slightly, but that's all up to the individual if altering our own perception according to another's is what we want to do or not. Sometimes it can at least be the first step in building a better relationshp rather than just staying estranged. But you're right that it is not always the case. It always takes two willing parties to do that.

Thank you, Theresa. Hugs to you too! Yes, it is always uncomfortable and the hard part, for me, is accepting that I can do nothing about it. It doesn't matter as much when it's just some random stranger or a general acquaintance. But when it is a friend or someone particularly close to me it can be difficult.

Yes, when it comes to the truth there's one person's perspective, then the others, and somewhere between there is the truth. Most people won't admit that, however.

Hello, Flourish. At least it seems you are willing to admit it. Probably goes a lot Nguyen way when dissolving tensions between you and someone else.

The older I get the more I find the need to double check my perception - especially with relationships. You've really hit the nail on the head with your insightful poem.

Shannon,

If you are right

And I am right

Then you and I must think alike

If you are wrong

And I am wrong

It doesn't matter

Cause you and I would still get along

I am so glad you are my friend

And I am flexible enough to bend

If I find that you are more right in the end

Love you poem my poetic friend
