Who Wants To Play

Some People Do It All The Time

This year has already started and we are eleven days late

But don't worry you can join in at anytime

This is a game

This is a test

It can be fun or it can be excruciating pain

This is a question of mind over matter

I am not good at this and have failed every year as long as I can remember

What is the idea you may ask ?

That is way to easy

I want you to guess and think about it when there are so many choices

It can make us a better person and give us new excitement in every day

It can make us feel better or curse the day that is about to begin

O.k. I have never been one to keep a secret

Yes it is the New Years Resolution

Giving up something we really love

What fun is there in that

That was my feelings exactly until yesterday I did something I couldn't take back

I told my wife

I said if I gave up this particular something

Something I know and love so much

For one reason to spend all my energy making one dream come true

To give up something I already spend so much time doing in hopes to make my life better

To have a constant reminder that will push and drive me closer to my goal

To write about my struggles and my littlest achievements

To be so focused and persistant

Well all I can say is I opened my mouth and put both my feet in it

I am a competitive person and don't like to lose

The only thing at stake is I have to swallow my pride

No amount of money or no gift can buy

So I said it yesterday like a whim

Then later she said you promised

Then I tried to back out of it and finagle the bagle but it didn't work

She stood her ground and didn't budge one inch

Now it was up to me to decide

To do it or just quit

I am going to give it a try

It is going to be real hard

This could be the hardest challange I have ever had to face

I will report on my progress every few days

It might be sooner than that if I am weaker than that

I will let you know if I last the year or not

Right now my legs are shaking and my heart is breaking

Today is day one

How long can twenty four hours be

So for those who have given up smoking or drinking I can now see and feel what you feel

I have chosen something else but I can relate

If I gave up those two it would be easy I never was a big drinker and have never smoked

So I am going outside to take down the Christmas decorations and freeze my mind so I don't think about it

What ever it may be

Hopefully you will follow along and see if a crumble and fall

I can't say I will last

All I can say is it is going to be something I will never do again

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that is clear

Talk soon and keep thinking if there is something you would give up to motivate yourself to do something else you always wanted but never did

Join me and keep it a secret as well

After a year if we last that long we can all let our secrets out

Now is the time to suffer and be sad

But in the end we could be happier for what we have lossed and found

In one years time that is 365 days for those who are counting

For me it is an awful long time from beginning to end

I like the way you allow the reader to make assumptions on what it is you are talking about. My question, now that I can comment is: what is your secret? And please do not make it so that I have to wait until next year to get the answer.

Keep writing.

tendo I would love to tell you but then the game would be over.It would be like playing monopoly and winning after just buying one property. Each property is a prize and it can be won and lost. Each day is special and to see it come and go.I will learn to experience new things and enjoy old things even more.If you would like to pick something to give up for the year. That would be make my game more exciting and keep us both on edge.Whatever you decide to give up promise to do something that you have always wanted to instead but never found the time.If it is take a music lesson,go to the gym. After the year is up we can go back to what we were doing or not and see how differently our lives progressed with such a sacrifice. It is not if you win or lose but how you play the game.Remember only you know what you gave up.Thank you so much for commenting and this day is more than three quarters over.I am happy about that.

I wanna play! I wanna play! My favorite part, "finagle the bagel". Love it! I'm confused. What law says you have to give up something? I added something, but I can still play the game:) I have no idea how it is going to turn out, but my legs are shaking and I can't keep my mind off of "it".

daisyflowrs You made the game better. As long as you play.Don't tell me what it is.Only 364 days until I tell my secret.I am so proud I lasted one day.Even though I often thought about something I didn't do it.I gave up two things to make it exra hard.I am also doing like you and adding something I have never done. All will be told when the year is over.I love how the excitement is building.Temptation is so thrilling.Thanx for playing!!!

Are you trying to quit smoking? If so or something whatever..you can do it..bless you..debbie

daisyflowrs profile image

364 days is a really long time to keep this to myself. Will I make it? Does it count if I tell my invisible friend? She doesn't tell anybody my secrets. Can I? Can I tell her? Pleeeeaaaasssseeee? To answer your question, she is not an imaginary friend, she is just invisible (to everyone but me). OK, so she really doesn't exist. Can I tell my son's juice box? It's just sitting here, waiting for him to throw it away. I am not his maid.

Deborah Brooks It is not quit smoking but my mother kicked the habit when she turned 60 and she now she is 82.She use to smoke a carton a week. She started when she was probably 15 and smoked ever since.I remember she use to wake up with an awful cough.A smokers cough from all the nicotine in her lungs.I thought the cough was going to kill her.I am so proud of her.For me I actually gave up something I love to do.I procrastinate and say I am always going to do something else.I guess I love to do too many things. So this year I picked one of those things I always say I am going to do and gave up something I always love to do.My incentive is to finish something I haven't done in eight years. Then I can go back to doing the other thing I love so much.Sometimes you have to give up something important to motivate yourself to another direction. The temptation is there but I will be so much better by finishing my old dream. To see it to the end.If it works out or not who knows. All I can do is try.The kicker is my wife has to be by my side and support me.She has to listen to me mope and complain and it is only day 2.Daisyflowrs I talk to my cat and I feel better. My wife knows but nobody else so you can tell your imaginary friend and your son if he can keep a secret. The harder it is to keep quiet when someone else knows.I am sure you will make it.You are a woman and you have nerves of steel. You have been put through every test during pregnancy and like most women will probably later have more babies.Where if men had to have babies the first man would tell another man all about the pain and we would see a huge population decrease.Do think we would go through all the pain and suffering you go through for 9 months.I don't think so.Well that's a good idea for another hub.Men Having Babies Not In My Lifetime.Thanx for all the wonderful comments and now two days down and only 363 tiny little days left.I like the sound of that.

My son? Keep a secret? If I wasn't so tired, I would laugh so hard and pee my pants! I told his juice box (which is still sitting here). I feel much better! The Juice Box, my next hub!

Too late, I already shared my new years resolutions but wait I didn't give anything up...I must think what can I give up? I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't swear...hmm this is so hard. Now if I knew what you'd given up well that might make life easier? Scratching my head I think about my resolutions and I so want to join in the game...everything I said was what I am going to do not what I am not going to do. Any way I will think of something and I will follow your progress and I will join in the game when I have decided what I am going to give up...great hub, great idea I love the suspense.

daisyflowrs Each day leads to the next.I can't wait for the weekend.A time to think of other things. The thing I gave up is not work related I will tell you that much.If your son has a favorite stuffed animal you might want to tell your secret to him too.It is only fair.leni sands It might be something small like read a book a week. But it is something you have never done. You can give up something you like and then feel all year what it is to go without.Like some people give up fried foods or sweets.I could never do that.I wouldn't last one day.More the merrier.Have fun.No cheating. No telling.Thanx for joining now we have 3 people and counting. That is one for each day so far.You can start now and are given extra credit(the few extra days off) because you are extra special.Thanx everyone and see you tomorrow.

Yeah! More players:) I love this game. It is like the game Clue, except, we are not in a house with various blunt instruments and hopefully no one playing is giving up murdering people for a year. I mean, that would be good to give up, I'm just sayin'. I told my pencil sharpener, my son's stuffed animal, "Monkey", and the stamp I put on an envelope today. It is amazing how wonderfully objects listen and don't interrupt when you are talking!

daisyflowrs I think the game is like monopoly we keep going round after round and can't wait to get to go.Everyone has their own turn to roll the dice. Some people roll a small number and struggle through trying not to land on someone elses property or utility and have to pay taxes.Other players roll a high number and breeze right through the roll.Skipping everyone and getting doubles and going right to go and collecting two hundred dollars.Well we have another player. My wife joined in and she watched and was unsure of what she was getting herself into. Then she said sure why not.So I told her this game can go on and on and it would be nice if you lasted till the end.We shall see. It is your turn you landed on community chest and have won second prize in a beauty contest collect $10.Conratulations!Boy my cousin and I use to play that game for days.It was so much fun.Another day filled with surprises.Have a good one.

leni sands I can't thank you enough. It is so fun to share with others our struggles and successes.Boy thats a mouthful.I love to see everyone trying and that's all anyone can ever ask.I am a bit weak today.I have been trying to distract my mind every chance I get.My mind keeps following me.Yesterday was a better day busy with work no time to think.I am going out in our first real snow and throw some snow in my face just to cool off.I am not one for looking at the bad side of things but this might all change.I can see it now the year of the complainer.FloBe you gave me the strength I needed today.Thanx for joining and we are really starting to start something big.I know I want this year to be over real quick.I am not ever doing this again.Well thank you and may you all find something fun to do today.I am running out of things to do.Everyone is in this together.

I just told my son my game secret. He didn't care. He wants to arrest the guy that "assinated" MLK, Jr. I've been arrested 4 times already for acting like a shooter (I was cleaning his bathroom). My boy doesn't understand that the "assination" did not occur today. I love when he tries to say, "assassinated".

daisyflowrs These times with your son bring the most interesting stories.Explore them further.Write them in great detail.I recently came across and old casette tape that I made years ago when I was small and my neice was just about six years old.It was my neice and I talking about the fun we were going to have.My neice is now 38.It is priceless. This was before video cameras were big.I have been struggling but I made it through another day.I took a picture of what I wanted to do but didn't and next year I will show the picture.New memories to laugh and make life fun. Thanx for reading and making the simplest things fun.

I am writing my son a journal. Each night, before I go to bed, I write about 3-5 sentences about our day. For example, a few days ago, out of nowhere, my son told me, "mommy, my heart beats I love you". I can't decide when to give it to him. I'm thinking I will know when the time comes.

DREAM ON profile image

DREAM ON 4 years ago Author

daisyflowrs You are so creative. It would be nice if you put some of his artwork with it and lots of pictures of the two of you..This helps describe your little boy who one day will become a wonderful young man.I would also include things that you say so he can also have memories of his sweet mom who loves him so so much. Each day I continue to make new strides towards my dream.Another day has come and gone and I feel I new opportunities are opening that before were never possible. It is funny how if we look at life differently it changes how we think and feel.Thanx so much.

The voices in my head are telling me to write a hub about my new years resolution. Is there medication for that? LOL. Kidding. I mean, I have voices in my head telling me to do things, they just aren't telling me to write a hub. Anyone who takes me seriously, is wrong. :)

DREAM ON profile image

daisyflowrs I hear the same voices.I wrote a hub on my new years resolution but I just don't hit publish.I let it sit and sit and stare me in the face like a pumpkin that has eyes that glow and a nose of secrets.Boy I am being tortured slowly. Then for an instant I feel control and I pass by it and go to other hubs for excitment and action. My cat just nipped at me for no reason.I say no bites.I don't bite you.Like my cat understands. Thanks for the distraction from a burning desire to forget this hub.

daisyflowrs One week under our belt. That is so great.Only 51 tiny little teany weeny weeks left.I can do it.You can do it.We all can do it.I love that we all are having fun and are challanged to push for a change.Something I am certainly not used to.To leave my comfort zone is not a pleasant thing for me.I am now understanding even in the anguish I can still find so many other things to love.It is up to me to decide what path I take.I could never write on the walls as a child.I had coloring books and doodle pads which were thrown out later when they were full. How nice would it of been to save artworks that we did way back when?Today all you have to do is take a picture and you can put thousands of artworks on one little memory card to save forever. No space no scrap books no clutter. That is the way to go.Then you can view them on the big t.v. screen. They can become larger than life.Let your son pic one wall in his room.Give him the washable markers that he can have fun with his artistic ability and keep the creativity flowing by drawing all he wants. At the same time if he wants to change the picture he has to wash it clean and start again. After a picture ofcouse.Have a wonderful day.Thanx for keeping my mind fresh.

I guess I am old school. I want the pieces of paper and the coloring books. It is like photo albums. People don't use typical photo albums. I do. Hard to buy now to put actual photos in. Growing up, I loved looking through my grandparents photo albums. My parents have photos, in piles, in boxes, in a closet. That washable marker stuff...I guess it depends on the water and if you still want your wall to have paint on it. LOL.

DREAM ON profile image

daisyflowrs Old school is good too.I just think once you try the new way you will be hooked and it offers so much more. You can take your grandparents pictures and put them on a memory card so everyone can enjoy them at anytime not just once and awhile. They have those photo albums that show up to 5000 pictures.Kids will be kids.Have a good day.

Its not easy giving up something that you love I used to do IT about 12 times a day and am down to 4 or 5 times a day which is hard going but ok - well I am coping, just! Hopefully given a little more time I will not need to do IT all...

daisyflwrs Don't be fooled by that smart little fellow.Today kids are so much smarter than us.He is just taking everything in and making you think he doesn't know.He may smile back or just give you a look but he knows how to keep a secret better than us.He is doing what he was told. Not to tell a soul.He is wondering why his mother would try such a thing?(lol)Keep up the good work.Your secret is good with him.It has been 12 days since we first started.Twelve is a lucky number. Many things come in twelve.A dozen eggs so beautifully packed in a carton waiting to be eaten. There are only twelve months in a year. One by one we are going to see them come and go.Now I eat a sweet snack to keep my mind off the my real pleasures.Distraction is the key.I have also tried secretly writing down on the hub know one can see my deepest darkest fantasy. It works for me.

your "dozen eggs" comment is actually not so lucky.

Read - The oldest known source and most probable origin for the expression "baker's dozen" dates to the 13th century in one of the earliest English statutes, instituted during the reign of Henry III (r. 1216-1272), called the Assize of Bread and Ale. Bakers who were found to have shortchanged customers could be liable to severe punishment. To guard against the crude punishment of losing a hand to an axe, a baker would give 13 for the price of 12, to be certain of not being known as a cheat. Specifically, the practice of baking 13 items for an intended dozen was to prevent "short measure", on the basis that one of the 13 could be lost, eaten, burnt or ruined in some way, leaving the baker with the original dozen. The practice could be seen in the guild codes of the Worshipful Company of Bakers in London.

Clue words for badness:

13th century - #13 - not lucky

Henry III -

Bad:

He was responsible for - the dissolution of the Monastries. Some of the most beautiful Cathedrals & Churches damaged.

- the break with Rome which isolated England & caused long protracted conflicts with Spain through the 16th & 17th centuries.

- his constant need for wars & his lavish lifestyle bled the coffers of England dry.

- he was not an effective mililtary commander or diplomat & engaged in many very expensive military ventures in France which accomplished absolutely nothing.

- he was hated by his people as he grew older.

- he was immoral and yet in complete denial of the fact.

- he discarded women like they were a pair of old shoes that were worn out and he needed a new pair.

- he professed to "love" many people (ie. Thomas More, Anne Boleyn, Katherine, Mary, Elizabeth) & yet treated them abominably, even to killing them.

Ugly :

- He abused the judicial system to have innocent people murdered. People who either just wouldn't compromise their conscience or because they stood in the way of what he wanted.

- It was recorded that he had over 70.000 people executed.

It is very hard to find positive things to say about this King's reign.

Good news, the number 12, without anything to do with food is a lucky number!

daisyflowrs That was such an incredible history that I never knew.I think you could make that into a wonderful hub. With pictures and relate it to so many other things that have twelve.I would definitely learn more than you already taught me and be excited to have been the inspiration behind the story. You could make it The Mystery Behind The Number Twelve. It could be part fantasy part history.I think you found something many people would love to read.Well for me I have passed twelve and moved on to the number thirteen. Now I am sure you have a rich history of why that number is unlucky? For me it is the luckiest of them all.I was born on the thirteenth. Not this month but still one day of 31 days I could of been born.Interesting to me.So this day went without a hassle my mind raced to so many good thoughts. It was a good day all around.Thanx for the lengthy comment and opening my eyes up to another view.
