Why I have stopped writing consistently?

When I started writing, I had no idea what to write about. I did not knew how this will help me in improving my overall income as my friends used to say but anyhow I started writing. When I started initially, I started answering questions at Hubpages.com, then soon I found about a site known as Indiastudychannel, and then I landed on boddunan.com. I joined other sites as well including expertscolumn.com and also created a few lenses on squidoo.com. I immersed myself into writing and till now I have written more than 895 articles at hubpages.com on different topics and categories. I started writing at boddunan and posted most of my long research articles here and made maximum money from this site at that period of time in August 2008. Besides these sites, I created several blogs at blogspot.com and build up a complete writing and social networking empire with more than 1500 friends at facebook.com, 1000+ followers at twitter.com, more than 800 friends on orkut, 1800+ followers at hubpages, and several online friends and fans sharing my articles via ping.fm.

But unfortunately after writing for more than 5 years, I have stopped writing consistently. Last, I wrote only 24 articles at hubpages in March 2012. I wrote only three articles in April, two in May, and three in June. I do not know why this is happening but seriously I have lost interest in writing might be due to less traffic and earnings I am receiving from online writing. There was once a time when I was earning double of what I am earning from my full-time job on a monthly basis from writing online but now it is less than half of what I earn professionally as an editor. Now I think that writing online is not as rewarding as we think but it is just like any other business where you need to put in loads of hard work to get great results initially but those are also on a temporary basis and die down with time.

The google algorithm updates like panda, penguins, and so on have hampered our growth as a writer. Now the situation is the more articles we write, the more we go down in search engine rankings and I believe it is not only happening with me but is happening with many other people at hubpages.com or at other online revenue sharing websites. This is the number one reason why I have stopped writing consistently. Now I think it is not worth putting so much of my hard work here as there are no great results. If this will be the trend, there will be lot of writers who will step back and look towards a different career because writing online is not as rewarding now as it has been mentioned by these revenue sharing portals online. There are several writers who are facing low self esteem and writers block because of very little interest in this endeavor. I hope staff and owners of these online revenue sharing portals are hearing this and are going to take some steps so that this field which was once a booming career does not tear down into bits and pieces.

Please don't stop writing, experience writers are the main source of the new writers, so for the sake of readers and new writers keep writing.

Cheers.

Thanks for your inspiration myownlife but there is little interest among the writers community at hubpages. Now hubpages staff have done some page layout changes and are testing this over several upcoming days. We don't know how much time it will take for hubpages and other revenue sharing sites to return to their previous glory.

I have to also admit to feeling the same way as you at times. I can see your point completely and am really struggling to see how I can make things better on HP. Unfortunately, I am finding more and more things are outside my control on HP and there's little I can do. I am also experiencing declining traffic and it seems to have coincided with the new layout being implemented site wide. I can't fathom another reason for it.

I think I might concentrate on my own sites for a while and try and optimize those in terms of conversions, instead of dedicating time to writing more hubs that are punished everytime HP decides to change something on the site.

I'm in the same boat as you, I fear. I have lost my desire, passion and focus for writing here. This is not to say I am leaving, I'm not. Nor will I not write any longer, I will. I just find that my heart isn't in it for the reasons you mention.

Don't give up! Developing and maintaining an audience for your writing is very difficult. Ups and downs are inevitable, and can't always be explained. I haven't been on HP long enough to know much about changes in HP policy, but I do know that when the weekend came around traffic seemed to fall off a cliff. At any rate, the writing is what is important. If one venue doesn't work, try another.

Blessings to you Soni2006,

Taking a break and/or slowing down a bit can be a really good thing . . .

As writers we all experience a bit (or a lot) of "burn out . . ." It's like many other fields that take intense focus and dedication for extended periods of time . . .

Think of the work and years it takes to become a doctor . . . And then after 14 years of advanced schooling, the medical/insurance industry changes all the rules . . . Without your control . . . without your input . . .

Or the years it takes to become a good lawyer from an Ivy League University . . . And then colleges start graduating lawyers in record numbers and the market is saturated and their pay falls to less than 50% . . .

Any place money can be made attracts more people, and more people dilute the ability to make money . . . It happens in all fields, not just online writing . . .

Keep in mind why "sprinting" and "long distance running" are separate categories in the Olympics ~ different muscles, different training, different stategy . . .

You have been sprinting for a long time Soni . . . And doing it very well . . . Rest up and consider long distance running instead . . . The world needs voices like yours . . . Don't let it go silent . . .

Blessings always, your original fan, Earth Angel . . .

Hi Soni. I stopped writing for a long while because I was in school. I can tell you that taking a break is a good thing. It gives you less stress and a different perspective. Earth Angel is right, Perhaps a vacation from writing might help.....

@Lauryallan, I know same is happening with several writers at HP. I think HP might help as it did in 2011 after the initial panda updates where all HP users were personally rewarded by their own profiles that were changed into subdomains so there needs to be something that can pull us out from this drainage now as we have been waiting for last 5 months or so.

@trish1048, thanks for showing your concern friend.

@Earth Angel, you have always been my true friend at HP dear. You have been always here in times of turmoil. Whenever there is an issue with the writer inside me, you always come back with the positive words and energy just like an angel. You are really an angel on earth. I am feeling great after reading your positive comment. Now, I am on.....

@dmhenderson, you are right friend. Though you are new at HP but you have experience of life. I am able to understand clearly what you are saying. Thanks for your kind advice.

@Ms Chievous, you and Earth Angel are correct. I am taking a vacation right now and will soon start writing again with full energy. Blessings to all of you and thanks for talking with me in this downtime.

Hey soni, maybe you could give the reader a "picture" to understand your situation even better. Maybe a graph of your HP traffic so people can see how it's fallen off and then they can compare it to their own graph etc. I know Rosie2010 did this after the Penguin updated and it really helped me see that I was hit by Penguin too. I think the graph in the profile, stats section should paint it clear and we can see exactly when you were hit and if that corresponds to the new layout going sitewide etc.

Hello laury that's a nice idea. I will upload a graph in some time.

Hello Lauryallan, I have uploaded the graph. Now you can check and compare.

Lauryallan profile image

Lauryallan 4 years ago

Hey thx soni. Waw you were up at 15k visitors that's really cool. My graph looks a little similar even thought I haven't really been here all that long. My traffic peaked at 6k daily visitors and then fell to about half. I have been hovering around the 2k - 3.5k count ever since, no matter what I do. I probably feel a fraction of your pain as I haven't become reliant on my HP earning yet. However it is frustrating to see your traffic graph plummet like that.

When I was making a good amount at HP someone told me not to rely on these earnings but I never listened to what he was saying and added HPs income into my monthly income but now I am feeling the real brunt of doing this.

Lauryallan profile image

Lauryallan 4 years ago

Yeah it is easily done when it becomes a regular income and you must have had a nice income from it for quite a while now so it's understandable.

What will you do now?

Do you write elsewhere like Squidoo, Wizzley or InfoBarrel?

Good Morning Again Dear Soni,

Thank you for sharing your graph . . . It is quite informative and I know a lot of people are inspired by it . . . Thank you . . .

I think if you examine the two bell curves, one for hubs published and the later one for number of hub views, you'll see clearly there is a lag time between the work/hubs you produced and the work/hubs being appreciated/viewed . . .

This has been my experience as well . . . There is a three to six month lag time between getting hubs out there and them really gaining momentum . . . You may have been experiencing burn-out at the same time as everyone was finally catching on that you are a great writer . . .

Unfortunately, when the bell curve for most views is at its highest, that's when it's most important to kick it into high gear . . .

The good news is that once you've reached those heights/milestones, it's A LOT easier to reach them again . . . A couple more good hubs like this one and you will be back on top again . . .

Sending you love and light and inspiration always, Earth Angel . . .

@Lauryallan, yes dear I write on a few other sites but not as much as I have written on hubpages. I have been addicted to this site.

@gp, in Delhi you can buy pumpkin seeds from Shree Ganesh Tradings at address: No. 69- A, Vijay Block, Laxmi Nagar, Delhi, Delhi - 110 092, India

Phone: +(91)-(11)-47603502 Fax: +(91)-(11)-47603503

Mobile / Cell Phone: +(91)-9811309854

@Earth Angel, I think you are right. Yes I can see the bell curves and you are absolutely correct that the work you will do this month will give you rewards in another three to six months but this trend has changed now. Now you get rewards if you are not penalized for your work done till now. If you are penalized, then all your work will suffer and if not, then you will enjoy higher rankings. Okay then also I will give it one more chance, I will again start writing at least 1 hub a day and will wait for another three to six months as you say. Might be possible that my hard work and your lovely blessings will bring back the lost traffic.

Dearest Soni,

Sooooooooooo glad to hear you will be continuing to write with HubPages! You've done the hard work already with so many great Hubs! If you slow down a bit and just produce 1-3 good Hubs per week (12 in a month instead of 30) ~ you will be back on top in no time!

YOU are the BEST! Blessings always, Earth Angel!

Hi Soni, when I saw your profile with 900 hubs, I was really motivated and inspired to write myself more and invest more of my extra time in to writing. But your this hub has again confused me on whether one should look forward to writing as source of another income really. Please advise.

soni2006 profile image

soni2006 4 years ago from New Delhi, India Author

See Rajneesh, I don't want to let anyone remain in dark. When I started writing here, I didn't earn anything for first 6 months, then the income started and it kept on rolling and then suddenly last year, it reached the highest point. But now currently the situation is not so good for writers but this does not mean that writing is not a good source of income. See if you will consider writing at hubpages or other revenue sharing websites as a business, then it is fine. As all businesses have ups and downs and you will enjoy high income in some months and then low income in some months, so you cannot add this income in your monthly earnings but you definitely keep these earnings for savings and those also as and when they are coming. Seriously it is not a reliable source for fixed income. Income from writing online is totally dependent on google and when they change the algorithm, anything can happen.

dunja 4 years ago

Dear Soni, Can u pls. tell me how much is the income u earned thru HP ? Tell me in break-ups like :

1) monthly highest

2) monthly lowest

3) total earning since ur joining ?

if we get these information then we can evaluate our-self in much better way.

soni2006 4 years ago from New Delhi, India Author

Hello dunja, until today I have earned approximately 13000 to 14000 dollars from HP writing articles for last 4-1/2 years. Monthly highest 1100 dollars, monthly lowest when started 10 dollars.
