Why Most Newspaper and Magazine Contents are Written in Columns

Why Most Newspaper and Magazine Pages are divided into Columns

People read Newspaper and magazines so they can get updates or info on their favorite topics and current events going on around the world . We also learn new things and get new ideas from reading newspapers and magazines . The ensuing article will help you to understand why most press media page contents are arranged in columns . It will also help you to check for the readability of your article and also provide some guidelines in designing a perfectly readable content for your audience .

Reading in the simplest sense is recognizing letters and groups of letters as symbols that express ideas in written or printed form . When reading English texts, the eyes of the reader scans over the line of text from one end (right) to the other end (left). The more words in every single line of a text means the reader's eye has to scan over the text longer before scrolling down to the next and then subsequent ones in order to make out meaning from the contents . Having long lines of texts could therefore make the reading process boring for most readers .

Few people would continue reading up to the end of the article .Especially when you have the article itself being long , You could lose the readers attention along the way when the eyes of the reader gets tired early and reading process becomes boring. This also makes it difficult for readers to fully understand the material they are reading .

In simple words , the number of words on every single line of text in an article, is able to determine the readability of your content is. Most professional writers, newspapers, magazines and other people in the press media therefore make their contents more readable for their audience by dividing the page into columns to allow for fewer words on the lines of text. This makes reading easier and less boring .

When you are writing a very long article for an online directory , you could also try to make your contents more readable by a dviding the content page into columns or making the text page/space narrow - that is if the articles directory allows it . Most online article directory pages have already being designed to look that way as they put ads on the side as well as related contents occupying the side of the page to make the actual text page look narrower . Some authors on article directories also make their contents page look more narrow to occupy less words on the lines by placing ad capsulse of affiliate network ( eg. Amazone , eBay ... ) ads on the side of the the text page . Some would also place their photo or article illustration on the side of the page to give that same effect .

You may not be a writer for any Newspaper or Magazine contents - but as a writer , you must remember every work that you publish contributes to the cultural content of the soceity . You are not just using language to portray ideas and images , but also helping to inform and educate the public . When writing , you should put your audience into consideration and design a perfectly readable content . This is how you can get your message to the audience and be able to bring some positive change and influence .

I worked for a small weekly newspaper for 7 years as a reporter and then the last 3 years as an editor. What you say in this hub is very true. Long articles or even continued articles would not have the following the shorter articles with pictures would have.
