X-Men: Magneto

Updated on March 14, 2012

I'm sure some of you are saying "At last!" or "It's about F***ING TIME!". Now it is time to change things up a little bit. On to one of, if not the best of the villains in the entire canon of the Marvel Universe. Magneto ranks as a fan favorite for his shear badassery, and the dichotomy between he and his old friend Charles Xavier. Which is even more apparent considering the success of the movies in large part is due to the relationship between the two characters, most notably being "X-Men: First Class". The two despite becoming enemies, still have a mutual respect for each other considering what they have done for mutant kind. Magneto, however, does not believe that humans and mutants can co-exist, as humans are naturally flawed and will look for ways to kill the mutant race. Magneto simply wants to beat them to the punch, although he is frequently topped by Xavier's X-Men. Magneto has the ability to control all forms of magnetism. This allows him to fly, create magnetic shields, stop bullets, and in fact his power is almost limitless.

Magneto was born under the name of Max Eisenhardt in the late 1920's to a middle class German Jewish family. His father Jakob was a highly decorated World War veteran and his mother were all taken into custody during the German invasion of Poland. As a young boy he witnessed the tragedy of the concentration camps, and even witnessed it first hand as his parents were killed in front of him. It is unclear how he made it out alive, but it could just be as simple as his powers manifested in this time allowing him an easy escape. In his escape he ended up going to Auschwitz where he became a Sonderkommando, which is a work unit of Nazi death camp prisoners, but he was reunited with a girl that he fell in love with named Magda. During the revolt in October 7th of 1944, Magda and Max who had now adopted the name "Magnus" escaped to the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia where they had a daughter named Anya. The three had a peaceful life until one day, their house was burnt down by an angry mob (why is it always an angry mob?). The worst of this event was the fact that Anya was still in the house when it was being burnt down. Magnus was enraged at the fact that the mob prevented him from being able to save his daughter from the fire and thus his powers manifested once more uncontrollably as he killed the mob and destroyed a part of the city. Magda, terrified of Magnus' power, left him after birthing two twins who would later become the mutants known as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. He would later search for Magda under a new alias that he would live his life under called "Erik Lehnsherr."

Erik would go on to become an orderly in psychiatric hospital near Haifa. In this hospital he would later meet and befriend one Charles Xavier. The two shared lengthy debates about consequences that humanity faces with the rise of mutants while neither of them revealed themselves to actually be mutants. The two inevitably revealed their abilities when they were faced with a threat in Baron Strucker and HYDRA. Erik created a suit shortly after this and called himself Magneto while taking all of the gold that Strucker obtained from a cave. The fortune that Erik took enabled him to pursue his goals and create the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He felt that in the course of his life, that humans has forced his hand to protect mutants by deadly force. Xavier's different view point came in light of the fact that he didn't have the brutal upbringing that Erik did. Erik sought out to see that mutants would become the "homo superior" where they were the dominant life form on Earth. He wanted to do so by creating a homeland on Earth for mutants to live peacefully or by conquering the human race all together. His first villainous act took place when he attacked a United States military base called Cape Citadel by bringing down missiles.

Magneto would then go on to create Asteroid M, an orbital base of operations that he viewed as potential homeland for mutantkind. He then proceeded to add to his group of mutants with angry and lost mutants such as Toad, the Blob, Sabertooth and his son and daughter Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. At the time however he did not realize Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were his children. He formed this group to help live out his goals in creating some sort of brotherhood among mutantkind while at the expense of humankind. Magneto then briefly conquers San Marcos, a fictitious South American nation, in the hopes of possibly making it another potential homeland for mutantkind, but his plans were foiled by Xavier's X-Men. Due to his plans being foiled on a numerous amount of occasions he attempted to have Toad infiltrate the X-Men, however it did not pan out as he had expected. To combat this, he had Angel kidnapped from the X-Men to find out their secrets. Before Magneto and his mutants could get any real information, the other X-Men were able to rescue Angel and destroy Asteroid M in the process.

After the Secret Wars, Magneto was sent back to a renewed Asteroid M but it was destroyed once again with him on it sending him plummeting back down to Earth where he sustained plenty of injuries. He was eventually saved by a fisherman named Lee Forrester and helped him recuperate from his injuries. After healing from his injuries he was asked by the X-Men to help fight a new evil that has arrived on Earth that they needed to stand united to face. After defeating the evil, Magneto even stayed with the X-Men. His continued stay with the X-Men eventually softened his views on humanity to the point where he turned himself into the authorities to stand trial for his crimes. A special tribunal was organized to strike against all charges from prior and to attribute it all to the old Magneto to avoid penalizing the "rebirth" of the new Magneto. The trial was stopped when he came under attack by Fenris, the twin children of Baron Strucker. Xavier ended up saving Magneto but in the process he sustained serious injuries. Xavier needed time to heal and asked Magneto to take over the school and the X-Men. Magneto agreed to help his old friend and did not return to the courtroom. In the process he also changed his name to Michael Xavier, taking the identity of Charles' cousin. In Magneto's redemption, he also managed to reconcile with his children Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
